I believe it's a joke spiral - and if muhoosier260 would have used a smilie it may have been more apparent  :P

that exchange should make the message board hall of fame.  not good when you have to be told you're being made fun of.

since I was bored.. and semi-interested.. and wanted to brush up on sql skills......
of the members with at least 50 posts..
muhoosier260 - you failed the prediction but not by much... Ziggy is our winner.. rocky (who felt compelled to "enlighten me" :P) is number two.. I am allll the way down to number 4  :D.. and muhoosier260, I colored your name in the table brown for you to find it easy since you were so interested.  By the way, multiple smiley's in one post did not cause the post to count more than once.. so being extra.. uh.. emotive had no influence on the results ;)

just two 1-line SQL queries with the results exported into excel and then some sorting, filtering, vlookuping, and forumlas :)  I *heart* databases and excel - you can do anything with them just gotta get the data in em first.

Probably not a good idea to pick a fight with a computer genius, but I question your numbers.  I thought that number seemed high for me because I didn't think I used smileys that often.  Granted, it's probably my mistake, and you'll explain everything to me to show me where I'm wrong.

Looking back at my posts (it's easy enough to do) I see that I have 128 posts (even though the site lists me at 121).  In those posts, I only noticed 13 times that I used a smiley (and another six times that I quoted a smiley).  That's just barely more than 10%.  To reach the 28.13% figure you listed, I'd need to have smileys in 36 posts.  I'm not even close.

Am I missing something?

Edited to add:  I didn't check this, but I'm wondering if the higher number would reflect posts in which I am quoted that also have a smiley (either one I put in originally or that the person quoting me put in).

and somebody above implied _I_ didn't have a hobby... geesh... :P (just to get keep my frequency up)

This is definitely a serious concern you bring up.  I swear to you, I WILL get to the bottom of this.  Answers WILL be had.  We shall be executing a FULL Florida style recount and even pregnant smileys shall be taken into account.  Justice WILL prevail!!!  Unfortunately, it'll have to wait til tonight when I get home.  Look for a FULL report in a few hours.

Hmm.. I believe that if you quoted someone else and that quote had a smiley in it, it count towards your smiley count - only fair since you are, after all, propagating the smiley population of this universe.  If you can't practice safe quoting then.. well.. you must be responsible for the consequences.

No, no, no.  I'm talking about when I post a perfectly nice, smiley free comment, and some smiley freak quotes me in his post and puts smileys in it (kind of like your last post).  Do I get charged with a smiley for that?  Or, if I post another intelligent, smileyless post, and somebody else quotes both me and some smiley maniac, do I get charged for that?  Unfair!

I agree with you on the safe posting issue.  I'll have to make sure I "scrub" the posts that I quote.

ahha... the mystery reveals itself....
problem was my search was case-insensitive.. (how unpolitically correct of me!!)
further, the posts are stored in html... and things like ;d happen often enough to throw off the results... however if I do a case-sensitive search for smiley codes (like ;D - which is ';' followed by a 'D') then I eliminate those... I learned myself sumthin new thanks to mr. excuse-me-14.62% (new and lone member of the poster enthusiast of the day club, but just for today) :P.

Without further ado, here is the updated (and CORRECT) table.  Note that relative standings didn't really change much.. but percentages did.

oh - and to answer your question more fully - someone else quoting you has no effect on your smiley count no matter what they do inside the quotes.
however, you quoting someone else will get credit for any smileys that appear in the quoted section.

make sense?
