Title: Post from a Philly basketball
Post by: Blackhat on January 30, 2010, 09:03:18 PM
"hoops guy" on a St. Joes site about DJ Newbill:

I coached against Newbill in an All Star game this fall (or a "Showcase Game" as they now call them) and I was asking myself if we were at all involoved.

That is not a knock on the staff but I was just impressed with the kid. My guess is that he is similar in position and size to Langston (though Newbill is a little bigger) and we wanted to go elsewhere.

The family unit is not as "knowledgeable" about college in general and college basketball recruiting in particular as one would expect, thus some of the North Philly "streetball" element did exert more influence than would normally occur...

This is a commonplace occurrence with "North Philly" kids... these guys provide clothing, athletic shoes, money, etc. in return for the kids playing in summer leagues and rec leagues... This element was a factor in this particular case...

Some of the most respected youth coaches and advisors were also intimately involved... The kid consulted a wide range of knowledgeable people including SJU assistant coaches regarding this process...

Nonetheless, Cincinnati called Monday, Georgetown was in the Strawberry Mansion gym on Thursday, Bob Huggins cut his practice short on Friday, flew in on a private jet to see the kid play Friday night and coached a league game today...

Given these recent developments, it is fair to assume that Marquette really "stepped up their game" and got it done early this morning...

The kid liked Marquette from the start. He played at an elite camp there last year and hit it off with the assistants... They were the first "BIG TIME" program show real interest...

He had handlers, I guess.    Again, these posts were made by "phillyhoops4life" on a  St. Joe's site so I don't know how reliable these comments are but he did seem like he was plugged into the philly recruiting scene after reading numerous posts of his.

unless this kid has a growth spurt I really question this signing especially after watching Fulce play yesterday.
