Title: So JC will probably come back, what about Otule?
Post by: ErickJD08 on January 18, 2010, 10:12:48 AM
I am pretty convinced the kid will play.  Lets think about the decision.

1.  Top PG who many projected to start as a freshmen is not thrilled at the thought of a 5th year.  Every top player is thinking NBA possibilities.
2.  Buzz would be absolutely thrilled to have another player to contribute.

The only X factor is where JC is at meaning health, strength, and, in his situation, weight.

ENOUGH OF THAT THOUGH, does anyone know how Otule's progress is going?  Is he walking or running or practicing?  Thanks guys.

wasn't it a microfracture in his foot?

those are especially hard and prevalent in big men... and they tend to reoccur.

I'd say sit until next year with Chris.

Yeah by the time Otule can return I think too much of the season will have passed to make it worth it.

Acttually it was a Jones fracture similar to what Dominic James had last year.  In any event, sit him for the season and get that 5th season.

I know the situations and the injuries are different, but I find it interesting that there has been such concern about our lack of depth, especially given that our remaining bigs (Mbao and EWill) don't seem ready to be contributors. Yet, most voices seem to be saying bring Junior back if he's ready, but keep Otule as a redshirt. No judgement here, just an observation.

A couple factors, I think.
1. Junior is already a much more polished player than Chris
2. Bigs typically take longer to develop.

I think we always look at bigs and say "If we just had him one more year, think how much more he'd develop."
Just my .02

also, bigs heal slower and are at a higher risk of reinjury due to the amount of weight.

foot injury on a big means sit for the year IMO.

On the other site, Buzz (during his interview) said that basically that Otule WILL be a redshirt sophomore next year.  There didn't seem to be any mention of other options.

Since he already missed half a year last year.  And since he is a big man that could use an extra year to develop, I would hope he would sit out this year and come back with 3 years to play.  As for Junior, I'd like to see him red shirt, but understand if he plays - if and only if he is as good as or better, in practice then Acker and Cubillian.
