Title: Has Acker
Post by: ATWizJr on January 17, 2010, 08:58:07 PM
turned the corner?  So much of shooting is confidence and he sure had it today.

I love it - a few weeks ago Cubi and Acker were written off by an all-knowing vocal minority on this board.

This is as good a thread as any to point out a couple things today:

1) About five minutes into the game we got a turnover and Mo broke down court.  One of the commentators made the following comment: "Once he gets the ball in his hands, he's as fast as anyone in college basketball."

Talk amongst yourselves.

2) As well as Mo played offensively I noticed many times, especially in the first half whre his man just seemed to blow by him.

Now to answer you're topic question - I think it's hard to say after one game, but he sure lit it up today and you're right - shooting is confidence and he sure had it today!

I don't think his ability to score or shoot a good 3 ball. It's been his defense and ball distribution. I was really happy to see him shoot and play with confidence but I still wasn't pleased with his press break or how quickly he pulls up on the break, and D. I'd like to see him make some better entry passes, but I don't know if he has the size for vision.

+1

They are merely DIII players I believe was the quote from one poster in particular.

The fact is noone in the country has a trio of 3-point shooters that can dominate from behind the arc like djo-cube-acker.  They were averaging 5 for 10 per game behind the arc coming into tonight, and that obviously went up.  Didn't see the final stats, but 6 for 6 from acker and I'm not sure what cube and djo hit.  WOW!

There is, was and always will be an "all-knowing, vocal minority" on this board.  My guess is that they are all-knowing and vocal about everything; politics, religion, other sports...not just Marquette basketball.

(Come to think of it, I have an older brother like that.)

interesting thing is that none of those three is the one with the highest 3pt %.. Butler is (if you ignore Frozena's 1-1 season stat).. although he has just under half of Acker's attempts his 3pt percentage is higher by 15%.  I wouldn't be opposed to him taking more shots too as long as it came in the flow of things.

Player3FG-FGAPct
Frozena, Robert1-11.000
Butler, Jimmy10-17.588
Johnson-Odum, Darius35-65.538
Cubillan, David24-51.471
Acker, Maurice18-41.439
Fulce, Joseph1-3.333
Hayward, Lazar26-83.313
Buycks, Dwight11-37.297

Also curious is that Lazar has taken the most shots despite having among the lowest percentages.. I looked over his 3pt patterns and noticed that when he shoots a low percentage, we win more games and win he shoots a high percentage we tend to lose.. that is, his 3pt shooting is a combined 36.6% in games we lose but 26.6% in games we win.. seems counter-intuitive.

It also seems that in games we lose he shoots more 3's than in games we win (average of 6.5apg vs. 4.4apg)... but that can be attributed to a different correlation in that the games we lost were mostly against ranked teams.

Then again, 42.7% of statistics are made up.

We are stroking it well and you just may be right.

MU is the only school in the country with two players in the top 50 for 3PT %.  DJO is 3rd and Cubes is 49th.

From a team perspective, however, there are a few teams right there with us.  Columbia leads the nation, Marquette is tied for second with Notre Dame and just ahead of Kansas, Virginia and Iowa State.

The main motivation was the chip, not on his shoulder, but on his tooth.

Only 38.9% of the time, though.

Yes but 60% of the time it works every time.

I am probably part of that 'vocal minority' as I have stated and still believe that PG will be the undoing of this team. Nothing against the two individuals in question, as I think they give it everything they have, and I respect how hard they work/play. But, the fact remains, offensively we are not as strong with Cubillan out there, and the same is true defensively when Acker is out there.

Now, The Junior Cadougan developments obviously could change things, but I never have, nor do I now like our chances in Feb/March with Acker and Cubillan as our PGs.
