I know this is going to sound stupid, but how does that work when you donate by texting a word to the number? Do they bill it to your carrier? Do you also give other identifying information? If you donate through your carrier, are they keeping any cut at all?

It will show up as a one-time charge (unless you do it a bunch of times) on your cell phone bill.
I wonder if they take out a $2.99 processing fee for this
Do it through an organization that you know of such as the Red Cross. The FBI is warning people that there are scams going on collecting money by posing as an organization aiding Haiti, which is terrible.

Yeah, that is disgusting. I wonder, though, how I could set up some kind of dealio like this...where I can tell people to text the word..."BEER" to oh, I don't know...12345 and it will automatically give me 5 bucks in my checking account.
I googled the numbers I provided up above, and they all seem pretty legit.

I don't doubt the legitimacy of the numbers you posted, and thanks for posting.
I'm always a bit reluctant to give money to a charitable organization through an intermediary (the supermarket, a fast food place, etc.). I'm always concerned that they're going to keep something -- however small -- for the trouble. If I donate $10 to Red Cross by texting and send the money to Verizon, how do I know if Verizon sends the full $10 forward?
In the end, I'm more inclined to donate directly.

This is a list of organizations you can donate to Haiti too for specific purposes: medical supplies, shelter, food, etc.

I actually looked in to it, it's pretty expensive to set up a 5 digit text thing, unless you are a big company with $$ to spend. Probably won't get enough in beer money to offest your costs. :)
I avoid the texting scams, just go through American Red Cross....hopefully your company matches as well so you can double up
