Title: Jay Leno Back to 10:30
Post by: TallTitan34 on January 11, 2010, 11:57:45 AM
http://tv.yahoo.com/news/article/tv-news.en.ap.org/tv-news.en.ap.org-20100110-us_nbc_leno (http://tv.yahoo.com/news/article/tv-news.en.ap.org/tv-news.en.ap.org-20100110-us_nbc_leno)

Local affiliates were upset that Leno's show was leading fewer viewers into their late news programs, costing them significant advertising revenue. NBC said about one-third of the affiliates were really hurt by the Leno show, although they wern't clear on how many said they might pre-empt his show.

Leno will return to the 11:35 EST time slot and Conan's show will begin at 12:05 EST. Conan reportedly has a contract that guarantees him a multimillion-dollar payment if his show is moved later than 12:05 EST.

He did steal Stuttering John....

I like both of them but prefer Conan by far.  I don't understand why Conan gets punished for Leno's poor ratings.  The blame has to fall on NBC who thought it would be a good idea to put Leno against legit shows on other networks.

He is the PG Stern.  And frankly, that is what the older generation want from their late night host.

Conan was funnier later, but he had to "Vanilla" up his show too much, IMO.

I think it was Seth Myers that quipped on SNL that NBC is in negotiations to bring Jay back to 11:35 EST, but Conan will still be the host of the Tonight Show.  Unfortunately it will not be tonight.

It's not the plan that they'd like, but it forces Conan's hand in a way that may save them money and ratings.  It's obvious the concerns about Conan's act playing at 10:30 were valid.  They feel they made two mistakes, by giving one show to Conan, and creating one at 9:00 for Leno.  They consider Leno more marketable at 10:30, and don't mind if Conan moves to a competitor.  That to me means that he's really tanking in that slot.

I've heard that if Conan walks right now, he gets $80M over four years.  Yeah that can be mitigated if he goes elsewhere, but I know if that were me, I would go on a nice hiatus.

Hards is upset that Breitbart isn't a raving liberal nutcase, that's all.  He's probably spent the day crying and cursing over the news of Sarah P hooking up with Fox News Channel.

I couldn't care less about any of these major network clowns.  Thankfully I haven't seen Leno for years, but I'm sure the only good things about his 'show' were Headlines and having the homeboy Jim Norton on.

WELCOME TO RED EYE!!

Conan has been ripping NBC and Leno apart and it is awesome!  The quotes below don't include Tuesday night where he was even more pissed.

Conan's Jabs at NBC and Leno:
- [Audience applauding] "Ladies and gentlemen, please! You keep that up and this monologue won't start until 12:05."

- "We've got a great show for you tonight. I have no idea what time it will air, but it's gonna be a great show, let me promise you that."

- "When I got to work this morning, there was a 1923 Duesenberg parked in my spot."

- "Good evening, everybody. I'm Conan O'Brien, the new host of Last Call with Carson Daly."

- "This weekend, a 6.5 earthquake hit California... the earthquake was so powerful, it knocked Jay Leno's show from 10:00 to 11:35." [Then mocks Leno's voice.]

-"Everybody now wants to know what my plans are... all I can say is I plan to continue putting on a great show night after night, while stealing as many office supplies as humanly possible. I'm gonna rob this place blind."

-"NBC announced they plan to lose $200 million on the Winter Olympics next month. Folks, is it just me, or is that story hilarious?"

Conan Gave His Future Options Of:
- Star in a Lifetime original movie about a woman trapped in an abusive relationship with her network.

- Move to FOX and follow their hit "24" with a new show called "24:05."

- Convince NBC to let me keep this time slot if I can gain 10 pounds of chin.

- Bring sanity back to NBC by hiring Gary Busey as head of programming.

- Leave television altogether, and work in a classier business with better people, like hardcore porn.

Both Leno and O'Brien are whiners.

You know what would have stopped this musical chair time-slot stuff?

If their shows were more interesting, more funny, so that more people would actually watch.

It's not like they don't have complete control over the content of their shows, and nearly unlimited funds and support.

Here they are whining about NBC execs .. No one to blame but themselves.

NBC is doing what they have to: maximize revenue.  Probably was a mistake to remove Leno from 10:30.  Well, that ship sailed, and now they are trying to undo the mistake.  Oh, the horrors.

No.  What they should have done is never started the Jay Leno show.  Who wants to watch back to back "Late Night" shows?  Jay always had lead in shows and Conan has gotten none.  It is a crock.

It's funny that NBC created the plan to move Conan to the Tonight Show years ago to avoid all of the drama that happened between Leno and Letterman when Carson retired.  Now they've even ended up with more drama, if that's even possible.

Neither Letterman or Conan were as funny when they moved to 10:30, although Conan is at least tolerable.  Leno at 9:00 was hurt by the guest boycotts from stars on the other networks.  There's only so much comedy you can do daily when you have an hour show with only one guest.  The 10:30 slot was perfect for him.

However I think Conan hit on something in his letter yesterday.  This could be the beginning of the end of The Tonight Show.  Leno's audience won't be the same as before because there will be some hard feelings from some of the public to all of this.  And with Leno being a workaholic and having no guest host, who know who they'll eventually get to replace him when he finally does quit.  (Hopefully not Jimmy Fallon.)  Meanwhile Conan will go to Fox (most likely) and splinter the audience even more. On top of all that, the coveted demographic is watching "The Colbert Report" for that first half hour anyways.  The Tonight Show is no longer the institution it once was, and it's about to get worse because of all this.

I know Conan puts a lot of stock in The Tonight Show's legacy but I would love to see him following Stewart and Colbert.  Great lead in for his demographic and he could get back some of the edginess he lost when he switched time slots by going to cable.

Regarding the Colbert Demographic... how long does everything think his schtick will last? I loved watching the show for the first couple of years, but I grew tired of it. It won't be long lasting like The Daily Show as it is all gimmick based, so really, how much longer for Colbert?

Colbert has already had a significant ratings drop after the election, and hasn't seen the same numbers since.

Colbert has already had a significant ratings drop after the election, and hasn't seen the same numbers since.

I had the same thoughts when he first came on.  I thought it would grow old quickly.  But I'm liking that show more and more as time goes along.  I think The Daily Show has slipped below it.  Part of that could be that they've lost some great talent over the years such as Colbert, Carell, Helms and Corddry.  That's hard to replace.

The downfall of Colbert will be backlash from oversaturation.  There's already a bit of a backlash over the coverage he's getting for the US Speed Skating team, the edition of Newsweek, etc.  However I think his show is consistently the funniest thing on TV at any time on any channel.

You need to check this video out if you missed it.  Jimmy Kimmel was on Jay Leno and absolutely torched him.
