First, huge thanks to Rocky for working all day and night to get MUScoop relocated to a new server. We'll probably have to support him now, since he was probably fired from his day job for screwing around with Scoop!
Clearly, people will need to dip into Scoop slowly, as if you are an addict, going cold turkey for 24 hours .. you've had the shakes for a few hours. Can't just plunge into the deep end.
Scoop's DNS will be slowly propagating through the universe, so it's availability will be sporadic to the rest of the planet.
You could put this in your local HOSTS file .. but you are already here, so this is only for people who it's not working for:

WTF? we win a game late, make free throws and the site takes a sh!t? ;D
Truly, the site had taken a sh!t about 8 times in the last couple weeks .. pretty much 2-3 times after each game with traffic.
New server is probably 50x faster with more memory, etc .. just in time for our National Championship run.

That was funny
The first thing I noticed was the fast speed of the site! Thanks Guys!
yeah it's juuuust a tad faster.. somethings that took an hour to do on the old server took 5 minutes to undo on the new.. ;)

We'll wait until we get more people back, see what the load is, and then re-evaluate. That particular feature is especially "expensive" in terms of processing.
We have a alternate plan for that box, but that won't happen until Feb/Mar.
Do you guys need some $$$? I'm up for making a small one-time donation.

Yeah, you guys should setup a PayPal account. Can I buy the rights to the Superbar?
The Superbar presented by MarqPTM.
I LIKE IT!
Rocky and Spiral currently bear the $2500+/year cost, which just went north due to this server upgrade. I've urged them to, and it looks like there's some support for a little server-fund-raiser.
Naming rights? Not a bad idea! Or we could sell off the "news" at the top.
Scoop costs are $7-8/day. Maybe if you "bought" a day or a week, your name gets put up in the news .. "Today's MUScoop brought to you by MR. HAYWARD"!

$50 Sponsor a week and rename the SuperBar anything you like

Be glad you didn't. The most active thread today is about moving the students to the sidelines because it would magically produce more wins and better recruits. The question was phrased as if it was as simple as more wins + unhappy alumni vs happy alumni + less wins.
Someone actually posted "Until we put the students at center court Marquette will not win a National championship." I almost signed up for an account just to call that guy a moron, but instead I cried for humanity and ran away.

have you thought about having a 'raise money for us page'
1: links to mu items (or just editor recommended stuff) you get a commission on, really easy to do through amazon.
2: Ability to select a news headline.
3: pay per click ads that we can click on and you get a few cents.
4: For a hundred dollars you can mute another poster for 24 hours.
Probably need to register as an LLC and pay ridiculous taxes. Could you donate procedes and be a non-forprofit?

how about $50 to pick a phrase of the day that will get anyone who types it banned. My first choice would be either: current administration, elite big or remember when.

Thanks for all the offers. hopefully they'll stand for a few days. I'll look at getting some donation account setup this weekend. I know I could do it quickly, but there's no urgency here.
If we make it though the 'nova game without a crash I'll be very happy. The past few games I've had to get the data center people to walk over to our server and use the *gasp* physical power button to get things reset. That's how bad it was getting.
To put in another plug - Hostgator rocks. They got the order for the new server processed and the server setup within 4 hours yesterday. I still had to transfer all the data (they would have done it for me if I was willing to wait until today, but I wanted to get off the old server quick). They've been very helpful in all of this, the only thing they couldn't do was make the problems with the old server magically disappear....
Count me in for a donation. Maybe if you get enough money you can change the Pizza Hut Player of the Game to the MUScoop Stud of the Game haha.

Sure they can... so long as no profits are distributed to shareholders or owners, the entity is considered not-for-profit. However, if there are operating profits, the proceeds would have to be allocated to past or future losses or donated to charitable (tax-exempt) organizations in order to avoid paying income taxes.
Whichever guy, Sultan SW, or Benny last stayed at a Holiday Inn Express .. we will believe.

MUScoop, Inc. would have to fit one of the 26 types of organizations under 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code. I don't think there is a section that covers the operation of an internet message board.

This is moot any way since MUScoop has no profits to speak of, and likely wouldn't, even with donations.
However, you can be a non-profit without being a 501(c) organization. Non-profit is a legal status, 501(c) is a tax status. Non-profit, by definition, means that you do not distribute profits to shareholders, not that you're tax exempt.

I believe that this organization could fall under a 501(c) type organization - likely a 501(c)(7) for social and recreational clubs.
Also, it's a very common misunderstanding that nonprofit organizations cannot make a profit. Any company that does not make a profit (nonprofit or not) is most likely not going to be an company very long! - unless it has awesome directors that keep plugging their own money into it (THANK YOU MODERATORS!). As Benny B alluded to - A nonprofit organization is an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses them to help pursue its goals - (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-profit_organization - the end all be all source on the internet).

Setting up an org to accept donations is making my head spin. Keeping it as a personal hobby is easiest.
Hm, with all the tax implications, I think it's going to be a "buy the mods a beer" button. This way it's a personal gift (taxes come from the giver), you expect nothing in return, and if we happen to occasionally use our beer money to pay for the server, then it's just less beer for us.
On the other hand, we might just buy lots of beer too :) Anyhow, I let it slip this weekend, but I'll get a beer button up soon.
Host Gator is #4 on this list of the top 25.
