Title: Assists for Acker and Cubi
Post by: willie warrior on December 09, 2009, 06:19:43 AM
Only one assist combined for these guys in 58 minutes of play. We need more than that from them.

They need to be more assertive with the ball in general.  There was one play in particular where coobs had a wide open lane, got to within 5 feet of the basket, and kicked it out to the 3 point line instead of taking a nice lil floater.  The guy he kicked it to swung it to DJO for a 3, but that's not the point.  He had a bunny of a bucket and blatantly passed it up for some reason.

DC also took a wide open baseline drive, had a layup, and kept on going to the other corner, like the basket wasn't even there.

That starting lineup last night is going to get eaten alive in the BEast by all but a couple of teams.  DJO needs to start in place of Cubillan.  Maymon needs to start in place of Fulce.  Despite Acker's limitations, he is our best option at PG - I am really surprised that Buycks doesn't seem to be handle the PG duties at all, given that he said he played point most of last year.  I hope he and Lazar (who has looked terrible the last couple of games) get it going on Saturday, or it could be long day.

I know that he must feel that he has to carry the team but he seems distracted.  The almost shot clock violation before the steal is a prime example.  I don't think that he knew it was running down.  That and a couple of times that the ball was pulled right out of his hands.  I hope that he regains the focus.

Hayward is shooting too much and not making the shots. When he posts down low, he is often double teamed and sometimes three guys are there--he needs to pass off more to the open man, which will then open things up for him.

I agree that DJO needs more minutes--he seems to be improving every game, and he is our only consistent outside shooter right now.

Starting lineup should be:
PG Cooby/Acker
2G DJO
SF Butler
PF Hayward
C Maymon
Bring in Bucyks, Williams and Mbao in relief to use up the minutes. I still think Bucyks has great upside. He penetrates and rebounds well--just needs to eliminate TO's. It looks like he could play both Guard positions and SF. PG would be his least favorable right now.

I agree with the lineup the only concern is Maymon, he did look better last night but got in foul trouble quickly again. I don't think he is used to banging inside, but when he popped out and shot the jumper at the free throw line it made me wonder where that had been.

I would like for him to shoot more often and get opposing bigs in more foul trouble, yet he is stilling gaining confidence game by game which is apparent.

If Maymon gets in foul trouble, then you can put in Fulce and Williams off the bench.  But he needs to be playing the majority of the minutes, foul trouble or not.  Based on game production, it appears Fulce is getting the start and PT because of his long relationship with Buzz.

Although I don't think Maymom looks comfortable yet with his roll as an inside player, he's clearly maturing faster than Williams and definitely has more upside than Fulce.  I don't know that he necessarily needs to start ahead of Fulce [his athleticism allows us to play a little more uptempo and his "hops" give us a CHANCE at winning an opening tip] but J-May defenitely should receive a lion's share of the minutes.

As for Williams, last night I think we all saw WHY he hasn't been able to get on the floor.  On the defensive end I thought he brought a lot of atheticism and he really pressured the ball well.  Off the ball he got lost a few times, though, and on the offensive end he looked like he had NO CLUE what was going on.  He was constantly out of position and probably could have been called for 3-seconds on several occassions.

I've been a little agitated that Buzz has not gotten E-Will more game reps in the early going this season, but until he grasps what his role is on offense, I agree that he may be more of a liability on the floor than an asset...that said though, late in the game we should still use him to give guys like Lazar and Jimmy a quick breather...

I think the only relief Mbao will be providing is the role he played in the FSU game: Tall guy to stand in front of the inbounder and wave his arms around (and Buzz had to explain that to him...)

Buycks seems to turn it over a lot now, not a quality you want in a PG.  However, I think the reason we don't see at PG, is that either Acker and Cubillan are on the floor almost the entire game, and it makes more sense size-wise to have one of them at PG and Buycks at SG.

Wouldn't be surprised to see this chance as the season progresses.

Acker has his games where plays really well, but a point guard should have more than one assist and not so many turnovers. I also think that DJO needs more minutes. He contributes a lot of points and plays aggressively.
