Title: Dick Vitale on Marquette
Post by: spartan3186 on December 03, 2009, 09:43:27 AM
Vitale seems to think this team is pretty good

Cool.  Nice article.  Hope Dick Vitale is right.  :D

Every time I read the Vitale column on ESPN.com, I can't help but to laugh.  You know darn well that Dick has a ghostwriter, and I find it hilarious that whomever is truly writing these things always throws in a "baby," "are you kidding me," "diaper dandy" or another Dicky-ism to make it seem authentic.

If I was writing these columns, there's no way I could ever keep a straight face while typing.

Seems to be the standard line about MU since the OSC, which is perfectly fine by me.  Dickie V's assistant can really do some high-level analysis

Dickie V is completely unwatchable now -- completely predictable buzzword banter -- a character on a stage.

I watched Duke-UW (wishing both could lose) and I very much enjoyed Bob Knight's coverage.  One can learn alot about the game of basketball and the broadcast is not about how many times he can get into character.

I agree, I love it when Bobby calls games for ESPN. He is one of the VERY few TV commentators that I can stomach. He does a great job and I think offers insightful analysis.

The 6-8 Lazar Hayward.....LOL, if only.

+1. He's listed at 6'6'' but in reality he's more like 6'5". I love how people always make players seem taller than they really are. However, Lazar plays like he's 6'8''!

I'm willing to bet Dickie V dictates his column for someone else to type up and flesh out later.  I can't imagine he could type with ANY kind of accuracy.

I turned it on with about a minute left, and then was disappointed that I had missed it, since Musberger & Knight were calling it.

Musberger was ecstatic that the Big 11 finally won the challenge

Knight's "trust me, this crowd does not give a damn about that" comment was FANTASTIC.

To me, that's exactly why Dickie V is completely watchable!  He's hilarious!  Once in a while, he even throws in a legitimate comment as well...

My personal special hell would be a place where I would have to watch sports 24x7 and Dickie V + John Madden were calling every game.  With no mute button on the TV and no way to cover my ears... I'm on the verge of tears just thinking about it.

With regards to the Dickie V article on MU:  I haven't heard him have any original insight into college basketball since I've been listening to him.  As stated previously:  He is a caricature of himself at this point.  If you watch CBS' basketball once a week, maybe he's an entertaining novelty.  If you're interested in what's going on in the game and looking for further insight into the sport then mute the TV and try to find the game on an AM radio station.

+1

Additionally, I had the UW/Duke game on simply to hear Robert Montgomery Knight color the game... Best since Al.

You'd need Suzyn Waldman (NY Yankees radio) doing play by play for these games with Gilbert Gottried handling sideline reporting duties to complete the hellish picture.  Maybe you could be forced to listen to a radio sports show hosted by Rosie Perez and Fran Drescher, too, right after the radio show "He's from New York", hosted by Len Elmore.

I thought the exact same thing. It's one of the first times I've heard him that you could tell he was legitimately "in" to the game. Maybe it's being in an old Big Ten venue. It was a great telecast.

Absolutely, Bob does a wonderful job.  I still like Jimmy Dykes for a number of reasons.   ;D

I just hope we have given Dukie V a reason to be as enthusiastic about our team 3 months from now.

That's funny, because I'm going to see Gilbert Gottfried at Zanies in Chicago tonight.  Can't wait in fact.

Wasn't he the parrot in Disney's Alladin?  You should take your (some) kids along with you.  I'm sure they'd love him!  And after that, maybe you could take them to see Bob Saget.  Kids love that Full House show.

Edited to add:  In the very off chance that you didn't realize this, the above post should have been in teal (but I really don't care for the teal).  I just had to let you know.  I don't want some poor kid's emotional scarring on my conscience.

I know exactly what I'm getting into; he is hilarious.  Someone else may have missed the memo though had you not given the edit.
