So #3 MU over #1 Kentucky was a bigger upset than the likes of Bucknell over Kansas?
Dumb. That was a damn good Marquette team that spent a good portion of the year in the top 10 of the rankings.

was a good night ... but not that big of an upset. A #3 seed with three future NBA players - including a future HOFer - playing relatively close to home over a #1 seed isn't that stunning.
You could argue the final score was stunning or the manner in which MU handled UK stunning/surprising, but I don't think you would consider the victory itself stunning. I would say it was a mild upset. Having said that still one of my top 10 memories of all time.
Eamonn Brennan and Chris Chase are proof that anyone with spell-check can blog. With a little dumb luck, you might even get picked up nationally.
Yes... Kentucky was good in '03, favorites by many no less. But they weren't so extraordinarily great that being beaten by a #3 seed should be considered the #2 upset of the decade, except maybe in Kentucky. But then again, every time they do lose down there it's rationalized as the biggest upset of the decade.
Considering how MU played in the next game, it was a hugh upset.

Wait, how can this be. We were so ill prepared the next game how is it possible the same team and staff pulled this off against the #1 team in the land and a sure fire FINAL FOUR team?

I know you put it in teal. However, Buzz was not at MU at that time and you should not even say that kiddingly. Why rip on Buzz.
I could see why many feel it wasn't that big of an upset and to be fair to the blogger he points out that now it doesn't seem all that big. But Kentucky was really, really good that year. Great, actually. To have a 25(?) game winning streak and steamroll a power conference like the SEC just doesn't happen that often. They seemed destined to win the National Title and I don't think anyone thought the nice, plucky, good storyline Eagles would ever beat the 'Cats.

MU played the near perfect game against KY, then Kansas did it right back to us. Not sure anyone would have beaten KS that night. They obviously did not play the same way against Cuse (of course Cuse had something to do with it), though they didn't completely fall back to earth like MU did.
I enjoy the comment about Wade not making the all tournament team, because this means everyone has forgotten that MU got through the first two rounds (especially the first round) because Diener dragged them there nearly single handedly.

To the day I die I'll never understand the logic that the team and staff are painted as basketball negligent during the Final Four by some when only 6 days earlier the same team and staff destroyed the #1 team in America (enough that this website ranks it the #2 upset of the decade). It always makes me laugh It's as if the first four games against three ranked teams including a #2 seed and the overall #1 seed didn't happen.

I think Marquette's problems versus Kansas were similar to Michigan State's last year versus North Carolina. Sometimes a team is just perfectly matched to play you, and that was the case with both Kansas and North Carolina.
According to the west, the only reason we won was because Bogans got hurt. Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Which is kind of funny since, well, Bogans actually only played one half against Wisconsin and they couldn't beat them and he played the entire game against us (yes, not at 100%).
Nevertheless, a team without Bogans defeated UW-Madison, and we played them WITH Bogans and knocked the piss out of them.
To this day, why Bo Ryan didn't double down on THE ONLY PLAYER that was hurting Madison, Estill, is a mystery.

No, MU's problem vs. Kansas was Tom Frickin' Crean. He was both braindead and crapped his trousers in that game.
That's not an upset at all... I remember Kentucky had Keith Bogans that year as their prime time player and I was at the Elite 8 games in Minneapolis. He injured his ankle in that game and could barely play against marquette.

I was at that game as well. Bogans did have 15 points, but no assists, no steals, and played only 24 minutes instead of the 30+ he was averaging. I watched Kentucky play Wisconsin in the previous game and there's no doubt that Bogans' injury made Kentucky a much easier opponent.
Personally, I remember this game more for the amazing Dwyane Wade triple-double than the magnitude of the upset.
Bigger upset? How about Miami of Ohio (not ranked) over #2 Marquette in the opening round in 1978? Pretty painful one to watch.
Another great one was Navy (with some kid named David Robinson) over a very powerful Syracuse in 1986 in the Sweet 16.
Plenty of better upsets out there....

I have this recollection that Crean stated at the beginning of the season that his goal for the year was to get to New Orleans. Goal achieved. With D. Wade, he maybe should've aspired to a higher goal.
