Title: maurice lucas and cancer
Post by: classof70 on November 24, 2009, 06:34:55 PM
Just heard on NBA TV that Maurice is fighting cancer.  I checked Google and see he has bladder cancer.  What a force he was. For those younger folks in the group, there's never been a more dominant rebounder on MU than Maurice. The best power forward MU ever saw.

Agreed, though I came just after his era.  He had the best game face.  Good luck to him.

The most feared player I have ever seen.  Never smiled and was all business. Opponents were just flat out intimidated by his presence and he was a skilled big man, very big. Be as strong as you were on the court and beat your illness, best of luck to him and his family.

What a day for MU hoops, past and present. Maybe they should call off the game tonight!!!

No stuff. Luke was on my bowling team at the Y during "Individual and Dual Sports" class. First game he ever bowled, was like a 160. I swear the pins just fell over from fear. George Frazier, on the other hand, was a teammate on our 4 man team also. George's bowling ball and the gutter were like a magnet and iron.
I believe Luke's mother was a school principal in Pittsburgh. He was always very personable. But, his gameface was something else.

That's awesome.

Reminds me when Trevor Powell was on my volleyball team......total domination.  Just set Trevor and watch him spike it all day long.

I'm trying to remember the exact details, but I mostly remember the part of Maurice's recruitement in Jerry Tarkanian's book.

He said he had him, and some other kid, on a visit at UNLV. According to Tarkanian, he thought he was going to get Lucas going into the visit (he had strong connections in the Pittsburgh area). But, apparently, on the visit Lucas seemed very disinterested, and Jerry mostly ignored him and put the full-court press on the other kid. Then, surprisingly, once he got home Lucas told Tarkanian he wanted to come to UNLV.

BUT, and my memory is a tad fuzzy here, either he told Tark he was going to visit Marquette, or Al was coming out to his house to talk to him. Jerry got a little nervous. Next thing he knows, Lucas is going to Marquette.

Tarkanian said he would basically give up if he had to recruit against Al, he was going to get the kid every time.
