Post by: MrRivals150 on November 18, 2009, 12:15:12 AM
Anyone know if the Marquette main bball store sells jerseys of #2 Maurice Acker?

I don't know for sure but I doubt it, usually they only carry one or two players for the official jerseys. Probably just Lazar or Butler as your options. Don't know if there is anyway to order a customized one online.

Prepping for next year already are we?   ;)

The spirit shop on campus sells jersey shirts that have some kind of Marquette logo on the front with a big number on the back.  Just wait until next year when they sell "#2's" with the Jumpman logo.  That's what I'm doing.

I was tempted to get a #2 t-shirt jersey the other day.

Does anyone know when you can purchase jumpman gear?  I am sure this has been covered before so I am sorry for bringing it up again.

Next year. Orders are made well in advance of the season so the Jumpman switch was made too late to get anything this year.

Something I never understood.

Why doesn't MU sell T-shirts like the Brewers (or any other team for that matter) do?

A simple name and number on the back, and MU on the front.

Cheap to produce and they let people back a player without having to buy a $100? jersey that you look stupid wearing anywhere but around the house or to a game.

They can't use a player's name.

They have t-shirt jerseys without players names.

In the NCAA you can't use a player's name.  That's why in college video games everyone is just a number and you have to program the names in yourself.

Once a player is done though you can use his name.  Thats why they can put Wade's name on jerseys and jersey t-shirts but not Lazar's or Butler's.

I'll just file that away in the "Rules that are stupid" folder.

I think its because, technically, if they sell the jersey with the name then that player has to get some profit from it. And that is against ncaa regulations. Correct me if I'm wrong

I think it's a licensing rule.

Technically, these are amateur athletes that can't make money or royalties off of jersey sales.

Therefore, teams and brands (EA sports) can only use the the number of the player... not the name.

I'm sure somebody around here has more details and can explain it better than I can.

It's all related to "should college players be paid" debate.

I wasn't aware that some kid could own the licensing to the name, "Smith" as there are millions of "Smith"s out there.

I understand the rule, but that doesn't mean it can't be stupid.

It's basically what 2002mualum stated: it's a licensing rule and falls into the argument of whether college athletes should get paid.

But more specifically, the collective bargaining agreements in professional sports permits the league to determine who gets the rights to use the names of athletes.  In turn, the league/teams/athletes/etc. get a portion of the proceeds.

In college athletics, if the NCAA gave EA Sports the right to use the athletes' names, the NCAA/conferences/teams could get a portion of the proceeds, but the athletes could not (because it would violate the amateur status of the athlete if they received any form of compensation).

Case in point (slightly different, but similar enough) is Jeremy Bloom.  He use to play football at Colorado and was an Olympic skiier.  Because he received endorsements to help fund his skiing, the NCAA had to look into how it affected his status as an amateur and if I remember correctly, the NCAA ruled that because he was compensated in the form of endorsements, he was no longer eligible to play football collegiately.

That's my understanding at least.  If there is anything wrong in here, please correct me as I certainly am no expert.

Just curious, but if the stuff was ordered so far in advance and couldn't be switched, then why does the new stuff have the generic Converse chevron logo instead of the star-in-circle DWade/Converse logo they used the previous two years?  Were we really going to use the generic converse logo this year instead of Wade's logo, even if DWade wouldn't have switched?

I don't know what number Blue will wear when he's at Marquette, but if all you're going on is the picture that was probably taken at the MU Elite camp where Blue is wearing a No. 2 jersey, I'd wait another 10 months or so before buying your Blue jersey.

I was wondering why Bloom got in trouble for that yet some players are allowed to go play minor league baseball and then go to college and play D-1 QB like Chris Weinke.

The star and chevron logo is replacing the circle and star logo on the Converse jerseys this year.  They aren't generic logos, it was an intentional and planned branding change by Converse for this season.

The shirts they do produce are almost exactly what Hards was calling for, they just don't have the name on the back.

But, I agree with you that the NCAA has the stupid rules.

I'd guess that they wouldn't sell Vander jerseys until his Sophomore year. I can't remember them ever selling a freshman's jersey.

But when is the last time we had a freshman like Vander?

True. And I guess it all comes down to which two (or one, if they do Jimmy again next year) players would sell the most.

Good problem to have, we've come a long way from the off-brand Odartey Blankson #0 jerseys hanging in the shop...

One possible problem:  if it's true that they have to order all the jerseys one year in advance (as people have been told as an explanation for why they don't have Jumpman merchandise), they're going to be really reluctant to order a bunch of jerseys for a freshman -- even one of Vander's quality.  They're going to want to see him on the floor wearing a number before they order a bunch of jerseys with that number on them.  I'd guess that is a main reason they generally don't carry freshman jerseys.  I'm not sure anyone knows for sure what number Blue will wear next year.  Looking into my crystal ball, I'd expect jerseys with No. 33 and No. 25 next year.

The Bloom situation was a prime example of the NCAA just being ridiculous and not knowing what their own rules were there to stand for and protect.  Pure bureaucratic BS.  Bloom was an outrageous talent and is still one my favorite college players of all time.  Everytime he touched the ball, you just held your breath cause something crazy might just happen.

When it comes to baseball, don't teams often pay for the school of some of the athletes, scholarship-style, in lieu of paychecks?

On a funny side note about the Shirseys: My friend works in the Spirit Shop and said Jimmy Butler came in the other day and bought one of his own. Cant figure out if that is egotistical or just friggin sweet.

Yep.  Someone may correct me on this, but I belive that's what happened with Chris Crawford here at MU.  He was drafted by the Houston Astros and played in their minor leagues for a few years.  We hoped that would happen with Dick Shaw, but he never signed despite being drafted twice.

The most famous example is probably Trajan Langdon who was technically a walk on at Duke because the San Diego Padres were paying his tuition.

A friend from Chitown drove to MU to see if they had Jumpmans...he was told that they'd be out in the summer/fall of 2010.
