Title: Black to Memphis
Post by: Lennys Tap on November 16, 2009, 08:48:56 AM
According to Jim Ganzer (IWB) Tarik Black commited to Memphis last night.

Bummer. Not surprising, but too bad.

This one hurts because its always the bigman MU can't sign.  Another runnerup, maybe Pinkston is still considering us but does not have the size of Black.

Best of luck to Black, he could have gotten serious PT at MU, now hope he gets a shot off with all the other studs on that team next year.

If confirmed (and I assume it will be), Good luck to Tarik.  I don't respect Memphis much as a school (or BBall program), but Tarik sounds like a good kid.

Disappointed, but not surprised.  Tomorrow comes.

It may be a bummer but I have faith in Buzz; that cat can recruit.

The question still remaining is he a good/great bench coach?

Only time will tell.

+1

You never know what will happen.  Coaches leave programs, players sign late, etc.  Black was perfect for MU, but can't blame him for wanting to play with his buddies like Vander wanted to do with J-May.

Too bad as we could have used him and he would have been a good fit.  But, so be it, Buzz will pull someone else in, and Maymon may have to play some extra PF or even C at times next year.  However, if Otule keeps developing, he may be a solid 5 by next year.
I wish Black well and he should join a loaded team at Memphis, plus he will be near home.  So, I can 't fault his decision making and he has to do what he thinks is best for him.
Pinkston seemed like he was a very heavy lean to Villanova.  I'm surprised that he hasn't commited yet.
Maybe a Juco in the spring?

Lots of time left. Would not be surprised to see another guard in the early period. Ayodeji Egeeymi visited this weekend.

Pinkston was a Nova lean, but still hasn't pulled the trigger, which is interesting. He'd be a nice get, but probably a longshot.

It's a good idea to have a scholarship open in the spring. Never know what might happen with transfers, coaching changes, etc.

+1.  I have no respect for the Memphis program, but still not about to turn into a Badger and criticize the coach, kid, or recruiting process when I don't know any of the specifics.  He made the choice that was best for him and we'll live with it.

Now it's on Buzz to step up and deliver.  He's been good about turning around with a commitment close to if not just as good after losing out.  In his terminology he's got a good class, not a great class coming in, but two open scholarships to work with.  First place gets you a player's services for a few years, second place gives you wasted time and money.

Whatever happened to Phillip Jackson from Chicago? He was at the first Elite Camp and I'd heard we were very interested in him, but since then nothing.

Per Scout, Pinkston to announce on Weds.

Jackson hasn't developed the way people thought he would, not really a high major prospect at this point.

Aside from his appearance at the first Elite Camp, Pinkston never visited MU. He's visited other schools on his list, so can't think that bodes well for us.

Pinkston was at both Elite Camps this year, not just the first.

It is very possible that with Black out of the picture,  Pinkston now knows he is almost a no brainer at the 4 or 5 for us next year, and could go a long way for us if we wanna steal him from nova.

With Black now apparently out of the picture, what other big men, besides Pinkston (who's another undersized 4) have us on their radar?

I was originally very excited about the possibility of signing Maurice Walker or Freddy Asparilla...does anyone know what is going on with their recruitment?  I know they were both leaning towards other schools, but I think Buzz has to put the full court press on guys like this now...

Anyone with an update on them?  What other bigs are we looking at?  Juco?  Transfers?  Etc...

Marquette is a great school and Tarik Black would have been a great addition.  I wish him nothing but success at Memphis, but I was really thinking he was going to be a Warrior.

I don't think we're still listed with Asprilla. I still bet he ends up at K-State. That's been an odd recruitment.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a JUCO big added in the spring. Just hope it's not Clark.

what are the chances we come out of all this with a 1 star Juco in the spring like we used to?

If he was a lock for K St he would have committed. However, I do not think we are on his list anymore, but Memphis is.
