Title: Buzz Publicity
Post by: ATWizJr on October 21, 2009, 09:16:55 AM
So, I'm sitting in the athletic office at the HS in RI where I coach soccer and I come across a catalogue with a very familiar looking face on the cover.

It's a catalogue for Eastbay Team Sales (Wausau) and the picture is none other than Buzz Williams with the following caption:

Buzz Williams
Marquette University Head Men's Basketball Coach
-25-10 mark in first season leading the Golden Eagles
-School Record 12 Big East Conference Victories in 2009
-Advanced to second round of 2009 NCAA tournament
-Assembled Top-25 recruiting class

I assume these are being sent out nationwide.

Good pub for Buzz and the team!

Only a self-serving, ego-driven, phony would highlight himself and his own accomplishments above the university, its tradition & history, and most importantly the players.

Thank goodness someone took the bold first step to hijack this and turn it into another pro/anti-Crean thread.
We haven't seen nearly enough of those around here lately.

I do not beleive many people and I know I did not have a problem with Crean Marketing himself and the program and therefore I have zero problem with buzz doing it.

Where I and the other people had a problem was at the same time Crean was politicing for inteviews with every BCS school that had an opening on an annual basis whilst strong arming the administration for a contract extension...every summer.

All the while being an absolute jack ass as a person.

Plese MU84 dont be so short sighted,  no one ever had a problem with him being on the cover it was all the other BS that Crean constantly put Mu thru that wore out his welcome.  Not to mention the first round flameouts and the NIT seasons in 2004 and 2005 with DII talent on the roster.

How much did buzz politic for open jobs this summer?  with the year he had and the recruiting class he signed he clearly had some cache.  HAs he pushed for the University  to enrichen and lengthen his contract? Lastly, ever notice people that people like can get away with more than people that are complete jack asses can? hmmm

Search function is your friend....there were MANY people that had a problem with his promotion of MU and himself....many, many, many.  Just use the search function.  Would you like a tutorial?  To say no one is completely wrong.

DII talent on the roster....please KEEP POSTING....your credibility wanes with every misspelled word and factless statement.  Every kid on our roster was a DI player, offed by DI schools.

This just in, Crean didn't politic for any jobs his first 4 years either, Buzz is in year 2....way to compare apples to oranges.

Crean qualified for the NCAA and the NIT tournaments with DII talent?  Damn, he must be a hell of a coach.

Are you for real? Buzz has been her one year! I guarantee you his name wil surface for better jobs in the future and prepare youself, he likely will leave also. Crean stayed nice years. You might want to give it some time before you put forth inane comparisions.

HATE HATE HATE Excuse me while I need to leave to change the water in (insert hate filled muscooper's name here) Mother's dog dish.

First time back here in awhile. There is nothing wrong with self promotion. Its something we all do. Good for Buzz to find a way to make a little extra money through a sportswear company.

Can someone please explain how a company's sports catalog showing Buzz on the cover is self promotion? Eastbay sent the mailing, not Marquette or Buzz. By that standard everyone on SI covers are self promoting themselves.

For the record, I don't fault Buzz at all for promoting Marquette (and himself) by appearing on the cover of the Eastbay catalog.  In fact, I think it's great.  Just like with his predecessor, I welcome any visibility that he can generate for the program.

But it is clearly different than appearing on the cover of SI.  While I can't state for certain, I strongly suspect that Buzz got paid to appear on the cover of Eastbay.  His agent/publicist probably set it up.  Even if Buzz didn't get paid, the reason he would want to be on the cover of Eastbay's catalog is to bring attention and publicity to Marquette (and himself).  Appearing as a newsmaker on the cover of a magazine is very different that appearing on the cover of a catalog.

17 replies and 1006 views suggests that it's a topic that still generates significant interest.  Maybe not as much as "Badger Meltdown" but not bad.

Can I help it if I know what generates a response? ;D

I wonder if Pakuni's protest could be an update on Yogi-Berra . . "nobody reads those threads, there are way too many replies!"

I think if Buzz makes the cover of SI, its worthy of conversation.  The cover of the SI Swimwear issue, even more conversation.  This however, not so much.   ;)

Who be Eastbay Team Sales? Check it out:

http://teamsales.eastbay.com/content/custserv/help--aboutEastbay/

This is a Wisconsin-based company -- a subsidiary of Foot Locker -- that sells shoes and shirts to athletic team coaches. They no doubt thought putting a successful coach on the cover of their catalog would help move apparel. Good for them, if it works, and good for Buzz and Marquette, because now high school coaches everywhere -- some of whom may have never heard either Buzz or Marquette -- have a snapshot of our program and our coach. This is not a bad thing.

Having started this thread, I just wanna' say:

I thought it remarkable that 1,000 miles from MU, in a HS athletic office, I stumbled across a catalogue with a picture of Buzz on the cover and I called it to the attention of this board because I felt it was a good thing for the program to be getting this publicity!

It's a plus, folks!

"The company began in 1980 when boyhood pals and high school coaches Art Juedes and Rick Gering set out to find professional-quality shoes for their athletes and ended up in business for themselves. With little more than $7,000 worth of running shoes and a dream, the pair took to the road and set up shoe clinics near their Wausau, WI hometown. At each stop they educated attendees with the benefits of their shoes and provided descriptive price lists."

Wonder if he's related to the former Marquette WBB player, Lesley Juedes?

Humm she was doing Marquette Women's Basketball games on the radio.  Now it looks like she is a real-estate agent.
