PROBABLE STARTING LINEUP: PG Maurice Acker, SG David Cubillan, SF Jimmy Butler, PF Lazar Hayward, C Chris Otule.
I'm not sure that the starters matter that much, I think that 8-9 players will get significant minutes but I just don't see this as the starting 5. Did they just pick the upper classmen?
probably.
It would be great if Otule has progressed to the point where he can start - there are reports that he has improved his game substantially this summer. The only one I definitely doubt is cubillan over buycks.

That's exactly what they did...upper classmen and the only big guy that was ON the team last year.
Personally, I see it like this: PG - Mo Acker, SG - Buycks, SF / PF - Maymon, SF / PF - Hayward, C - O'Tule
My rationale, Mo, although undersized, provides this team with STEADY veteran leadership and he really is a respectable TRUE point guard. Maymon and Lazar are cut out of the same mold - sufficient skills to play the 3, too short to play the 4, but physical enough to bang inside - so I believe those two will be fairly interchangeable. Buycks and O'Tule are simply going to fill needs and will be relied upon less heavily than the other 3 starters.
As for Butler being OUT of my starting 5, that isn't because he's undeserving...in fact, I think that if it were based on talent alone, he belongs there...but this team will need a veteran coming in off the bench when times get tough...so he's our sixth man again in '09.
That's my 2 cents, anyways...
i greatly doubt that lineup starts...
My guess would be DJO, Buycks, Butler Maymon and LAzar.
Acker may start in the beginning but i would expect Buycks or DJo to take over for him shortly.
Unlike four years ago where you really didn't have legitimate, experienced players at the 1-2-3 positions, I think that USA Today in their cursory review of each team is going to put experience in front of potential, i.e. the incoming freshman/transfers aren't going to be projected as starters sight unseen. Remember, this is the USA Today making these calls, not the J-S, MUTV or any other source much closer to the team. USAT doesn't have the insight, resources or time to fully evaluate who is and is not going to be starting.
That being said, I definitely think Acker and Hayward start against Centenary. I don't think Coobie starts. If I were a betting man, that's as far as I would go.
The rest, as Buzz says, will be decided by the players.
My thoughts on the depth chart
PG
Acker
Buycks
Cubillian
SG
Buycks
DJO
Cubillian
F
Hayward
Butler
Maymon
Fulce
Williams
C
Otule
Mbao
Just my thoughts, but.....
If Cubillian is the starting SG over Buycks or DJO, this team is in real trouble.
I want a Jimmy Butler Bobblehead and or T-Shirt
I think Maymon starts over Butler, but that Butler has more minutes by season's end.
I'm excited about all these new kids. I remember Wade's first season playing when I'd watch the games and think, "This kid is good. This kid is really good." (I live out of the area and this was before I was following Marquette on the internet so I hadn't heard all the stories about the open gym.)
I'm looking forward (hoping) to have some "This kid is good. This kid is really good" moments this season.

I believe Hayward and Butler are starting for sure. If Maymon starts it will be at the expense of Otule not Butler.
Acker AND Cooby in the starting lineup?! I'd like a hit of whatever that writer's smoking...

You want to smoke crack?
If Buzz wants to keep a D1 coaching job, he won't put a lineup like that out there unless it's a blowout. That starting unit would be hard-pressed to win a single game in the Big East. Thankfully, all indications thus far point towards Buzz playing his best guys at the same time for extensive minutes.
He'll probably also use this season to give the newcomers valuble playing time. I see no value in starting either Acker or Cubillan. Plus, I think there is good talent present with DJO, Buycks, Maymon, and Williams. Yous needs development, but this team will surprise in a positive way.
My guess is Otule, Lazar, Butler, Buycks and Acker to start simply from an experience standpoint.
I can see Maymon or DJO replacing any one of Acker, Otule and Buycks depending on how each player performs and how Buzz sees what roles each player fits in best. I still see Cubillan getting spot minutes off the bench and if he his his threes and plays solid D he gets on court more, otherwise he's not much help.
To be honest, I can't imagine a scenario where DJO doesn't start once he gets caught up after the injury. He and Buycks can both handle the point interchangeably.
I'm going to guess:
PG Acker
G Buycks
F Butler
F Hayward
PF Maymon
I think DJO gets big minutes off the bench (and maybe bumps Acker if he plays really well), with Cubillan, OTule, Mbao, and Fulce, EWill getting the rest of PT, distributed on whether Buzz wants to match up bigs/smalls.
I would love to see (1) Cubillan regain his 3pt shot from his freshman year, and (2) Fulce at 90-100% healthy. That would help this team IMMENSELY.

I agree that Buycks and DJO could very well be our starting backcourt as the season progresses, but I don't think they are interchangeable. While DJO can play the point, Buycks sounds more capable there.

The 6th man is often more valuable than the 5th starter.......he can play just as many minutes and offers Buzz more versatility from the bench. He clearly has the talent to start on this team, but I think we maximize his talent as a top 6th man.
