Title: USA vs. Costa Rica
Post by: ATWizJr on October 14, 2009, 08:22:12 PM
Can't defend like this and expect to win.  Yuck.

Not to make excuses (but I will anyway), but I think between the car accident and the fact that they have already clinched means that the Americans aren't caring much at this point.

They certainly have me convinced they aren't into playing. Doesn't hsi hurt their seed in WC?

Would be important to:

-win on home soil
-protect our seed
-win the Concacaf tournament

Wait-Bradley just scored.  Only down 1.  C'mon USA!

Wow.  In the span of about a minute they equalized the game and T&T and Mexico ended in a tie.

Concacaf Champions.

I think you were dead on.
After clinching and the accident, it's tough to get up for, basically, a friendly.  Not to mention the fact that it meant a whole hell of a lot more to Costa Rica.

I wouldn't take too much out of the game.  Awesome we got the tie, but I wouldn't take the teams performance into full consideration in what to look forward to next summer.

Did you see the team celebration at the end?

Don't tell me that winning the game, the group, while playing short meant a hell of a lot to the team.  Now, if Gooch is ok that would be big.

But the US won't represent Concacaf in the next Confederations Cup right?  Because Mexico won the Gold Cup...

Outstanding finish!  What a perfectly placed corner and not sure how the scorer went unmarked, but he made them pay!  I was flipping back and forth and noticed a US player went off on a stretcher late in the game and the announcers commented it might be a knee.  Anyone know who was hurt and his status?

per ESPN

Onyewu fell down on the slick turf and was diagnosed with a torn patellar tendon, an injury that usually requires a recovery time of three to four months. Because the U.S. had used its three substitutes, he couldn't be replaced.

Since the Gold Cup is held every 2 years, the next one in 2011 will determine who goes to the Confederations Cup in 2013.

That's a big part of the reason the US ran the JV team out this time around.

Awesome game. Way to battle back from an early deficit. With already qualifying for the World Cup and Davies accident, they could have been complacent with a loss. Way to fight. USA USA USA.

Does anyone else think the marking at the back last night was incredibly weak?  On Costa Rica's first goal, Onyewu gets beat to the endline and then no one is there to cover.  The second goal was worse imo.  Don't get me wrong, it was a great finish on their end but I think Bornstein gave up inside position far to easily.  There were a few other occasions where it seemed like the back was more content watching the play unfold than getting to a useful position.  If I want to nitpick their closing down in general was just poor.

That being said, they battled til the end and when their asses are put to the fire and they show some urgency, they can be a very good team.

Agreed. The back line has been concerning. Not having Demerit has been a blow as well. Hopefully everyone will be healthy by June. I'd love to see them line up Bornstien, Demerit, Onyewu, and Spector left to right. I think that gives them the best chance to be honest.
