QuoteThe IAAF has asked the South African athletics federation to conduct a gender verification test on an 800-meter runner amid concerns she does not meet the requirements to compete as a woman.
IAAF spokesman Nick Davies says the "extremely complex, difficult" test has been started but the results were not expected for several weeks.
Is it really that difficult?
EDIT: Sorry, thought I was in the Superbar. Please move.
please...no pics
EAT has this done every week because the results vary each time.
If I had boobs, I'd never leave the house.
Trying to be serious ...
She (?) is unique in that she is both Male and Female at the same time ... a mixed gender person (I believe the term is "hermaphrodite"). This is why it is so difficult.
This issue is not new. The 1936 Olympic women high jumper gold medalist was stripped of her medal when it was revealed she was a man (did I write that correctly?). Gender testing came in the 1960s after more men were caught competing as women in the early 1960s. 1966 Woman's downhill skiing world champion now goes by the name Erik and has since fathered a child. Remember Renee Richards in Tennis in the 1970s?
So, this issue is not new, just more complicated this time.

I saw her/his picture: abs scream "guy"! But she looks feminine, so go figure.
If they were born both male and female then what do they even test? Wouldn't there be aspects of both male and female in the test results?

Yes, as it was described, Caster Semenya fails the test as both a female AND fails the test as a male. The question is, is she female enough?
If you care, here is something that explains it
