Title: I hate Notre Dame
Post by: Sir Lawrence on January 30, 2007, 08:49:36 PM
Where is the display of animosity toward Notre friggin' Dame around here?  There was a time in MU's history when ND was "just a tad" less hated than UW.  Some years even more hated than Bucky.  They spanked Syracuse tonight, and they scare me more than G'town.

Not being from Wisconsin, I always thought that the biggest rivalry games we had were ND, DePaul and Dayton, in that order and with Dayton being a distant 3rd.

I happened to go to ND high school and I remember gettng some serious grief over wearing some of my high school basketball practice jerseys at the rec center.  Everybody hated ND.

Doc Rivers hit that 35 footer at the buzzer to beat ND the first time I brought a co-ed with me to a game.  After that I figured she was good luck so I stuck with her and married her and am still happily with her 26 years later.  But I still hate ND.

Why would we hate ND? We have owned them over the past few years. On the flip side, ND is looking for payback this year. A ND co-worker of mine started talking up this years game a few weeks ago.

I hate ND...

I hate all of those ND applicant rejects who said they "settled" for MU.

I hated them for cheering on ND more than MU basketball.

I can't stand the cocky Irish (from ND, that is).

We're gonna whoop them...just like old times.

I hate:

(1) Wisconsin - Bo Ryan especially. I cannot stand that man. Nor can I stand his Franken-centers and Franken-Power Forwards.

(2a) Louisville - When run by Pitino. Even in down years, they are possibly the team I want to beat the worst (i.e. by the biggest margin). I still froth at the mouth re: that 50 point loss.

(2b) Notre Dame - Always has been a worst. Always will be a worst.

(3) University of Michigan Football - I hate how they win, recruit and lose with grace. I hate the color maize. I hate that my adopted U of Minnesota and Michigan State University will always be below U of Mich's big brother status in the Big Ten.

(4) Green Bay Packers - Brett Farve, hypocrisy and John Madden's man love.

(5) Pitt - Slowly climbing up the ladders.

(6) Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears - tied - Payton Manning, his nose, and his pompous little brother. Everything Bears, including the fact that along with the Colts they have ruined the Super Bowl for me.

(7) Dallas Stars - This spot actually is saved for Dallas as soon as Modano is let go, traded, or retires, as he is the only worthy remnant of the old North Stars. It should still be the Minnesota North Stars.

(8) Detroit Piston "Bad Boys" - From the nineties. Can there be a more intolerable duo than Isiah Thomas and Bill Lambeer; Even eventual freak Dennis Rodman looked soft on that team. At a time when a Minnesotan's basketball team was the Celtics (due to McHale's presence), the Pistons were awful.

(9) Wisconsin - See above.

(10a) Louisville - See above.

(10b) ND - See above.

Honorable Mentions: New York Yankees, pre-the curse is broken Red Sox, Green Bay Packers (again), Argentinian national soccer team, Matt Millen, Wisconsin Badgers (third time), Louisville (third time), ND (third time), any team that continues to play in a dome, or other enclosed field, excluding my Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings (even though it pains me to know they play in the Dome), Indian National Cricket team and any cricket team they are playing for wasting so many hours of good sports TV on EuroSport when I was in Europe.

I feel a lot better now. Thanks.

Personally, I don't hate Notre Dame.  Actually, I cheer for them all the time, just not when they play Marquette.  I always cheer for our fellow Catholic schools in the Big East to do well.

I don't cheer for ND unless it will help MU in the standings.  I also cheer for the Big East Catholic schools. Check out the enrollments of the Big East schools. It's quite a contrast.

Wow, that was some rant MU cam! Do you like any team besides MU? Oh wait, I see the Vi-Queens and the Twinkies. Now I know why you are bitter.

I just looked up ND in our media guide. Historically, they hold a giant advantage over us, 75-32. We have dominated lately, but we have a long way to go.

I went to ND high school too.  Which one did you attend, the one in West Haven or the one in Fairfield?

I hate ND too.  I'm still mad about someone stealing my t-shirt that said Marquette on front with the finger giving the #1 sign and the back said Notre Dame with the middle finger.

Maybe its because I'm from Chicago, but my all-time most hated team is DePaul.  Not because they've beaten us, but because they have had the most thuggish and laziest bunch of guys over the past 15 or so years.  They had a power forward in the late 80's who initiated a fight in each game and Don Mengel and Dan Roan always blamed the other team for it.  I can't recall the guys name but he started the tradition that Tom Kleinschmidt, Lance Williams, and many others have carried on through the years.  Even when they have celebrated recruits, those guys underachieve.  Bobby Simmons was a huge recruit who never did much at DePaul then worked hard after graduation to finally get into the NBA then got a fat contract and resorted back to his DePaul ways and probably will never be heard from again.

Now I feel better and will once we beat them again on Feb 14th.

Speaking of ND, who would you rather have as the face of your program?  Dwayne Wade or Digger Phelps?  If I went to ND, I would cringe every time I saw Digger on TV with his matching highlighter.

Lots of anger out there. I guess I will vent some steam as well. I hate the following:

1) Pat Riley. I can't stand him. Even with Wade on the Heat, and the Heat winning last year, I still can't stand Pat Riley. This goes back to the Knick days and the classic battles of the Bulls vs. Knicks.

2) Pitino - He is the biggest ego maniac in the world. It's always about him

3) Sean Salisbury - what a douche!

4) Cameron Crazies - NERDS, enough said

5) ESPN's east coast bias - It never ends

6) Cheesy names for sections in the stadium and student sections. This includes MU. Why do our students and our student section need a lame ass name like the gold rush?

7) Steven A. Smith - just proves that any moron can get on TV

I have plenty more, but I will leave it at that.

I'm with you on the T-Shirts. Just wear a Marquette shirt and leave it at that.

More things I hate:

Lame t-shirts that try to be funny, but are not. Catholics vs. Convicts is funny, ND is a bitch, Ann Arbor is a whore is not, Brett Favre swallows, etc are not funny.

Signs at sporting events. Especially, signs at sporting events that try to be funny and witty, but are not.

first off you can't spell class without ass, and I am both :)

Second, if you can't trash talk and take the gloves off during sporting events then I don't know where you can.  Obviously, there has to be a limit but I have trouble drawing the at something like that.....maybe its cause I'm not Catholic.  All joking aside should nobody be allowed to wear shirts or signs that tweak people or teams?  Just curious what your line is since this tshirt is out for you.

Also general question, for those Anchorman fans, which is worse...."Notre Dame is french for our bitch", or "Notre Dame is german for a whale's va$%^#"?  Just curious might need to go t-shirt making?

A lot of you are listing off college bball teams you hate, but are forgetting a key team...flippin' Cincey!!

Our basketball rivals and teams I absolutely despise in almost every aspect:

1) UW
2-4) ND, Louisville, Cincey (take your pick on the order
5) DuhPaul
6) Pitt
7) Duke, just cuz they're Duke and the only reason to ever cheer for them is if it helps us

This list will probly get adjusted from year to year depending on how the teams are doing...Pitt will probly go up after a few yrs, i can feel the tension btwn us and them just building like crazy now (plus their fans are pompus @sses who think they're by far the best in the conference)....just cuz Cincinatti sucks so much this year, doesn't mean i hate them any less!!

The "our bitch" is definitely more offensive (and much less funny even if it weren't offensive) because it's closer to the actual translation.

The whale's va$%^#" is so ridiculous that it's funny (the fact that it's a line from anchorman makes it funnier too.)

there is definitely a line between being funny and being just plain rude and vile and you have to get as close to it as you can without going over sometimes when it comes to signs, shirts, chants, w/e...a huge part of any sport is the psychological edge one team has over another and fans are suppose to assist their team in getting that edge as much as possible.

also, the ND is German for a whale's va#*@...great idea!!!

Absolutely, you can and should talk trash.  I was (and am) a trash talker and I encourage it - particularly for current students, but really for anyone.  I like a lot - probably most - of the t-shirts that are designed to tweak people or teams.  I used to have one of the original Catholics versus Convicts shirts (from the day when that was consided offensive by some), and I even like the shirts with the No. 1 on the front on the middle finger on the back.  In short, this shirt is my line.  You're not a Catholic, so you might not appreciate the adoration of "Our Lady" among many Catholics.  I know that it's the school name, but the play on words is offensive to me.  And honestly, I'm really not one that is easily offended.

As long as we're listing things we hate in sports, here's my list.

1-91.  The Yankees, Derek Jeter, Paul O'Neill, Don Mattingly, Tino Martinez, "Genius" Joe Torre, etc.  If they played the Taliban in a baseball game, I don't know who I would root for.

92.  Any "sport" where the winner is not decided by a tangible scoreboard or a clock.  Any competition where a judge watches and says, "Uh, that guy (or girl) won," IS NOT A SPORT.  That includes figure skating, gymnastics, cheerleading, boxing (unless the winner wins by KO), freestyle skiing, etc.  The competitors may be athletes, but that doesn't make it a sport.  Bowling and chess more closely fit the definition of sport to me.

93.  Duke

94.  Dick Vitale talking about Duke.

95.  X Games sports fo the Winter Olympics made up just so the USA can get a medal or two.

96.  Soccer in all its forms.  My kid loved soccer, to, when he was 5.  Once he was old enough to master th American sports, it was see you later.

97.  College coaches who moan about not giving the African American kid a fair deal and then recruit four kids from overseas.

98.  Brett Favre and Roger Clemens and their annual "Pay attention to me, I might retire!" scams.  Inceidentally Favre hasn't been above average in about 5 years and Clemens started taking steroids they day after he left the Red Sox.  Look at his baseball card and it is obvious.

99.  Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, Keyshawn Johnson and all WR in general, with the exception of Marvin Harrison, Wayne Chrebet and whoever currently happens to be catching balls for the Jets.

100.  Barry Bonds.  I should also hate Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa, but other than their cheating they seem to be decent human beings, and Palmeiro has one of the best porn mustaches going.

that t-shirt idea was actually mine, i had them printed up when i was a junior during the 2003/2004 season.  thank god we won that one at home.  there should be around 230 floating out there.

Yes, some people took offense to that and i did get some slaps on the hand.  mainly because i was working at the McCormick hall front desk at the time.  there would be a longer line to buy t-shirts than there would be to get into the dorm.  i see where some people get confused behind the meaning, but nothing is intended towards Mary the mother of Jesus.  instead it is directed towards the university.  the Jesuits found no humor in it, same as some people on this board, and they took it to the res hall directors since they heard them being sold in the dorms.  I got suspended from work, but it really didn't matter to me because i made enough off the t-shirts to more than cover what i would have made working in the dorms.

i will be doing another printing of them since many of my friends have sold their's off their back (literally) after games.  i was going to wait till next year when we play them again at home (hopefully) but if i get enough interest i can do an early run of them.

now let the debate continue over how not funny those shirts are and how big of an ass i am for making them.

Not sure where you are getting you Brett Favre information from. Over the past five seasons, he has been on average top 5 in the league in passing yds, top 10 in TD's with a  completion percentage over that period 61.4%. QB rating has been down the past couple seasons due in large part (not entirely) to playing on terrible teams. For the three season prior he had an avg. QB rating of 90 with the lowest of those years being 2002. You freely admitted you hated him, so I wouldn't expect you to let the facts get in the way of your assertion in a thread like this one. He's had a rough couple of years on some really bad teams, and he is slipping as he ages, but not above average for 5 years?

You are right about Clemens though

You may be right about Favre since I just about never see him play except in highlights.  I just get the distinct impression, and have had it for quite some time, that he is a lot more likely to throw a reckless interception in a big spot than a gutty touchdown pass.  I could be convinced otherwise.  Anyway, I don't hate him so much as a person or player as I do this annual "will he or won't he" retire business.

I agree with Berman and Vitale as those that should be hated.  Vitale b/c he doesn't do any preparation, he just talks about his love for certain coaches and Duke regardless of who is playing.  He talks less about the actual game he is talking about than any "analyst" working today.

As for Berman, he luvs himself so much that I just can't take it.  And ESPN plays himself up so much that I must admit to throwing up in my mouth when he was advertised as a featured attraction when ESPN visits Disneyworld.

As long as we're listing things we hate in sports, here's my list.

96.  Soccer in all its forms.  My kid loved soccer, to, when he was 5.  Once he was old enough to master th American sports, it was see you later.

Oh yeah, and Thai food - more specifically people who eat it and claim to love it because the think it makes them hip/chic/interesting. Its not working dude! You convertable drivers know what I'm talking about. We're not admiring you when we look, we're mocking you.

Well done CT and Naivin!!!  Hilarious!

Wow, being a Cubs and Packer fan, I guess I should tell my wife, when I die, buy the extra thick gravestone, because there could be several people dancing on my grave!

BTW, I am not admitting that I am or ever have been an ND football fan, but I did grow up an Irish Catholic in the Midwest.  I will say I am not a ND basketball fan.
Title: Hated ND long before I ever planned on attending Marquette
Post by: pbiflyer on January 31, 2007, 12:35:51 PM
Our high school football coach was a ND alum. You either grew up loving or hating ND. I fell on the hating side. Every all american football player that we had ended up at ND, until Craig Ericson. John Carney, who holds the ND record for most game winning kicks went to my high school. It killed me having to hope that he did well. It was sweet revenge knowing that our coach had to cheer for Ericson to beat his beloved Irish.

Did not know about the MU ND rivalry until I got to Marquette. It was sweet my freshman year watching Doc hit that game winner. Still one of my all time favorite sporting moments.

My list of most hated:

1. Notre Who
2. University of Miami (you can't spell scum without UM!)
3. Satan
4. Osama Bin Laden
5. The plague
6. Death
7. Taxes

you get the idea

...if you can't trash talk and take the gloves off during sporting events then I don't know where you can.  Obviously, there has to be a limit but I have trouble drawing the at something like that.....maybe its cause I'm not Catholic.  All joking aside should nobody be allowed to wear shirts or signs that tweak people or teams?  Just curious what your line is since this tshirt is out for you.

Stillawarrior, thanks for clearing that up.  I can see where your offensiveness comes from.  My trouble is how you get a feel for what is predominantely offensive.....ie if I were to drop the french part and say Notre Dame is our bitch is that less offensive.  Some people would be offended just by having bitch on something.  I never would have made the "our lady" connection until you said something.  Everybody can be offended by something, how do I judge that?

my list:
1) any and everything to do with notre dame, except for the small number of people i personally know who attend the school
2) catholics/midwesterners/hoosiers who feel a proclivity to cheer for Notre Dame just because of their religion or geographic location.

Next to Ivy League schools, Notre Dame is the biggest elitist school. For some reason they emit this aura that the blue collar worker seems to pull for them, and they have a wide inclusive fanbase, many of whom like them just because they're ND. In reality though they're the exact opposite, an exclusive school and community. An example of this is their football team, granted they have had a considerable amount of success, not so much recently, but that has to do with their inability to win a bowl game in over a decade. Back to the main point, their football team (due to spotlight and i would imagine many wealthy alums) are one of 4 independent teams in the nation (check that stat, i think the others are navy, army, and temple) and its all so they can have every single game on national tv with nbc and abc. The football team is just a microcosm of the schoolThey see themselves as better than everyone else and it disgusts me when there are ND fans who like them just because it seems natural

I hate Notre Dame.   I've always hated Notre Dame.  My hate grew exponentially once I began attending Marquette.  I'm a huge (HUGE!) fan of whomever Notre (F@#&-ing) Dame is playing at the moment.

There was a "Notre Who?" shirt that I admired.  But I'd kill (or at least commit a felony to attain a Notre Dame / French shirt.   ;)

I was raised to hate Notre Dame, it is some times seriously a problem amongst my ND fan friends as we annoy each other.

Here is the other thing I don't get.....all the Irish-Americans seem to automatically get to be ND fans are for the most part are.....how does that work?

Just because I'm German doesn't mean I love beer....oh wait

But seriously, how is it that ND gets such an automatic fan base?  You don't see that in any other program where you could have zero connection to a program and just pretty much become a fan.  My cousin is half irish was raised in a blindly faithful UW family, grew up and lived his whole life in Janesville and yet is somehow one of the biggest ND fans I know.

I'm really surprised that the Cubs were high up on some people's lists for most hated teams, especially when they were listed higher than the Yankees. I'll admit that I'm a Cubs fan myself, but we've sucked for so long, what is there to hate? And don't say because we're overly optimistic because when we keep saying, "this year is our year," or, "next year its our year," its really just a joke. Plus your pretty cold hearted if you hate our goofy optimism.

I'll also admit that I grew up a Notre Dame fan, but I only follow them these days during football season. Being a proud Marquette student, I have grown to hate Notre Dame and my fanmanship has begun to dwindle heavily even in the fall. So basically, let's embarrass the hell out of them in the Joyce Center on the 24th!

Finally - How can you tell if someone is an ND grad? Because they'll tell you!---Its funny because they really are stuck up jerks.

I am always up for showing my hatred to other sports teams, mine goes as follows, I'll just do top 10 and then honorable mention, because the list is long.

1.  UW Basketball
2.  Chicago Cubs
3.  Chicago Bears
4.  Boston Red Sox (just because their fans think they are "morally better" than the yankees, when they are the same damn thing, and I am sick of Big Papi, he doesn't play the field, he can't be MVP)
5.  New York Yankees
6.  New England Patriots (hate Tom Brady, hate how they always win)
7.  Louisville
8.  Kobe Bryant (fricken rapist)
9.  Minnesota Vikings (turn a plastic baggie upsdie down, theres their trophy case)
10. Dallas Cowboys

Honorable Mention:  St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati, Texas football, Philadelphia Eagles (Donovan McNabb has a mondo of a head), Dick Vitale (when announcing a Duke game), Jay Bilas, ESPN during Super Bowl week (honestly, I could care less about watching the highlights of Super Bowls before I was born), John Elway, Emmitt Smith (keep dancing you sell out), Eli Manning, Brian Urlacher (still the most overrated player in the NFL, give credit to your D-Line you bum), U2, Country Music, George W Bush, Reece Gaines, Big Ten Basketball in general.

Look for more to come.

My list pretty much starts and ends with the Yankees. I had this vision (call it a fantasy) years ago that the Yankees plane crashed in the Rockies and they had to eat each other to stay alive. When the rescuers found them, the only one alive was Don Zimmer and he was gnawing on Joe Torre's leg. I know, it's sick, but I am undergoing therapy.
Other than that, I despise UW for the left-wing liberal BS it stands for, and my hatred for the old Detroit Pistons was up there. I kept hoping Rodman would collide with Laimbeer in midair and they'd both have to carted off in gurneys.

Well, this thread's taken on a life of it's own.  Pretty funny stuff.

Let see, I hate...(in no particular order)
- Slow internet connections
- Slow drivers
- Signing 18 month contracts for my TV programming
- Colorado "natives" that think I have no right to be here (never got that attitude in Chicago)
- Seeing Marquette lose ANY basketball game
- Cheap American beer (but I'll drink it...)
...

Oddly, I don't really hate ND or Wisconsin as a whole.  Bo bothers me, and I think the rivalries are great.  But hard to hate too many college teams unless they're run by someone with no ethics.

It's still pretty much just ND for me.  Several have commented on the why--the rivalry from way back, the arrogance, Digger, etc.

Bears don't bother me nearly as much as the Vikings and that pit they call an athletic facility to play in (although have fond memories of being there to watch MU destroy Kentucky).

Oh, and Joe Theisman.  Can't stand that guy.

2. St. Louis Cardinals
3. Michigan
4. UW Wisconsin
5. Packers
6. U of Illinois
7. Miami Heat (Minus Dwade)
8. Houston Astros
9. Minnesota Vikings
10. Pitt  (making a strong charge)

Fun Thread, although slightly unhealthy.

1) UW@Madison
2) The Packers.  The Bears never beat the Packers once when I went to MU, and I attended Marquette for five years!
3) People who went to UW@someotherschool but still root for the Badgers
4) Non-ND graduates who are fans just because they are Irish, Catholic, from Chicagoland, or any combination of the three.
5) Autobots - Optimus Prime is a sissy
6) Illinois Basketball (I got all out of sorts during their FF run.  Plus I have a non-expiring $1000 bet that MU will win the National Championship before Illinois does and it got kinda close there...)
7) Any basketball coach that slicks his hair, and I'm talkin' to you, Billy Donovan!
8) Francisco Garcia, Reece Gaines, Alando Tucker, Brian Butch, and Sammy Mejia
9) Cade McNown and Dave Wannstadt - People may hate on the Bears now, but we have gone through some lean years up there and I didn't even mention  Curtis Enis or Rashaan Salaam.
10) Dusty F. Baker and Neifi! Perez

That's enough hate for me - we should do a thread on things we love next

As a life-long die hard Red Sox fan, I can understand how everyone hates them now.  First off, we were hardly long-suffering fans, even with the 86 year drought, because we had a lot of excitement and fun right up until we blew it in a lot of years.  For me, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1978, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1998, 1999-2003 offered lots of fun and excitement despite the frustrating endings.  It's not like we were rooting for the Chicago teams or the Brewers or something.

I also agree that we have gone to the dark side with the Yankees.  There is no honor in winning by outspending, even if you're smart about it.  But, I'll never switch teams, though nothing short of MU winning an NCAA title will ever be as sweet as coming back from 0-3 against the Yanks and winning the WS in 2004.

PS - Big Papi is a perfectly adequate first baseman, no worse than half the guys out there.  Not his fault the Sox only put him out there 20 times/year.  If stone gloves like Juan Gonzalez and Jason Giambi can win MVPs, why not Ortiz?

Wow there Tex, how is it either teams fault that ESPN whores themselves to the East Coast Bias?  Heres the point and I'm probably biased being a Saux fan myself, but I don't think the Red Sox fans are nearly as arrogant as the Yankees fan.  Plus Yankees fans are similiar to ND fans....they just exist, one day someone just decides that cause the Yankees won all the time they are going to be a Yankees fan.  No one "chooses" to be a Red Sox fan.

So I should only hate ESPN b/c of the East Coast bias and hold the Yanks and Red Sox blameless?  No way, isn't there a parallel between the hype surrounding these teams and ND.  People hate ND b/c there just hyped up so much, both by the media and their fans.  Through the years, a lot of people chose to follow the Red Sox if for no other reason than to beat the Yanks.  Now that they've largely become the Yankees, I have no rooting interest when they play each other.  I just hope Schilling gets shelled along the way.

You have a solid point, I think the Yanks-Saux is overdone as well.  I think there is a striking similarity between the Yankees and ND....just don't think the Red Sox are there just yet.  Give it another 10 years of not winning anything and the Red Sox wagon will empty out some.

First off, the person that started this post should be a moderator or something. Well done...I have to admit I wish more people embraced the Notre Dame rivalry, in particular current Marquette students. I think it sucks people from MU even consider cheering for ND in any form (yes, that includes football). We do not go to Notre Dame. I wish I never saw a Notre Dame sweatshirt on this campus. Its funny how people buy into the national acclaim of a school, even when in reality they have no idea why they trully like the school and/or teams (another ex. UNC or Duke). As for ND basketball, none of their fans care until there team becomes good..I love fair weather fans, ND is the perfect example. It is interesting to hear older alums talk about the rivalry and how much they hated Notre Dame. We go to Marquette and should be proud and learn to love this school, its history, and sports programs..irregardless of how good we are. I think it is great to see this university grow and attract more kids nationally, as it should because it is a wonderful school. I assure you the quality of the students/faculty/alums here are far superior to that of Notre Dame. I love Marquette.

Although they are stone gloved... they still played the field, until Ortiz plays the field for the whole season, he shouldn't be MVP, the DH rule is silly and unnecessary, and I am glad the Brewers are in the NL for that reason.  However, I am glad you can see the reasons why I hate the Red Sox and can understand why the Red Sox are the same as the Yankees, most Red Sox fans can't agree with that (maybe you just are one of the few intelligent Red Sox fans)...

Other Honorable Mention things I hate.... when ESPN SHOWS THE SAME GAME ON BOTH ESPN AND ESPN2, I don't know why they started that, but hell, I don't need to see every angle in a little 6 inch square on ESPN2 when the game is on ESPN, started I believe with the Red Sox/Yankees, but they did it with NCAA football, and will do it I am sure with Duke vs UNC, why ESPN, why.  I also hated all the huge Big Ten believers that said Michigan should have played OSU in the National Championship(pre bowl games), Michigan had their chance, they lost, get over it.  The bowls sure showed who were the better teams (USC/Florida)

Wow, what a fantastic thread...

I started simply hating Notre Dame because my father "convinced" me to apply there with me knowing full well I wasn't getting in there despite going to a very good Catholic high school in NJ and carrying a letter of recommendation from a ND alum who was also my theology professor.

In the application was a question "How would you talk to a rock?" and that just set me off even further. I thought it was the biggest waste of $50 (I applied in 1990), and this was confirmed by ND being the only school that outright rejected me.

Then I went to Marquette and was amazed at all the Irish football fans, and that ratcheted my hatred up a few notches. I was never a college football fan, but I didn't get it. The NBC deal irked me some, too.

Then came that home loss when I was a junior and there was something about John McLeod in the post-game press conference that made my blood boil. When I went there for our game senior year, I took a leak outside the football stadium in the pure white snow on principle.

But my hatred of everything ND hit the "irrational and never to be the same again" after I dated a woman whose father was an alum and the MOST ANNOYING Irish football backer I had ever come across. You would've thought Christ was playing QB the way he talked this team up. Every time they lost, I would call my friend up (who was dating this woman's twin sister at the same time and eventually married her) and tell him, "Go call up Joe and ask him what the final was!!" or "Where's that National title now? Oh wait, you lost to Northwestern!!"

I have told many people that if, God willing, Notre Dame went 0-12 in football or 0-whatever in basketball for ONE SEASON, I would never carry so much venom towards that school again. Luckily, that has yet to happen.  ;D

The home game last year was a birthday present because I sat front row and probably jumped as high as I ever did in my life when Novak hit that jumper from the corner. I proudly wore my index finger/middle finger shirt that night and will do so again when they play this season at the Joyce. I hate that school and all the elitist crap it stands for.

But to round out a Top 10, it would include...

1a. The People's Republic of Madison. It's one thing to hate the Badgers basketball team, which I do with respect. But to be hopelessly liberal is just no way to go through life.

2. Yankees fans. They think an AL title is a birthright, and every year, it's always fun to watch my co-workers be absolutely miserable for the two weeks after they get bounced in the ALDS.

3. Cubs fans. Lovable losers my ass. Stop drinking and start caring about the team.

4. Reverend DiUilio... for UNILATERALLY changing the nickname. Him and his damn sweaters.

5. Pitt... I like the fact it's a new rivalry. I dislike the fact their fans think their s--- don't stink.

6. I know this may be a group lumping, but I have never seen a city on the verge of implosion like Chicago with the Super Bowl should the Bears lose. Your team went THIRTEEN and THREE, not the other way around. Enjoy it.

7. Whichever night football team has Tirico, Theisman and Kornheiser, who is a great writer but has no business being in the booth. It's like listening to "Ask Dr. Stupid" from Ren and Stimpy when Kornheiser tweaks Theisman, who's another ND knob polisher.

8. Pizzamakers in Kenosha who cut pizza into squares. Who thought of this and WHY is it allowed? It ruins the fact that there is good pizza from seemingly everywhere I order.

9. Illinois drivers... you people are f'n nuts on the Tollway, to the point the person behind me can read my VIN he's so far up my tailpipe. High-beaming me when I do 80 makes me more inclined to slam the brakes so I can win a lawsuit.

10... And finally, Notre Dame... I told you I was irrational.  :)

I got into quite a few schools, including Notre Dame and Wisconsin, and it pisses me off when either of those schools say that kids that go to Marquette only hate Notre Dame or Wisconsin because they didn't get in.  However, and I'm sure I'm going to get ripped on like crazy for this, but some of the posts on this board back up what some of those pricks are saying.

For the record I went to Marquette and I obviously cheer for them before anyone else, but I am a fan of Notre Dame football (I hate their basketball team) because they were good when I was growing up and my older brother liked them (my dad was indifferent).  I also cheer for Wiscy FB and Wiscy BB (a distant, distant, distant 2nd to Marquette, in fact one of my favorite things ever was getting hammered and ripping on Wiscy fans after we beat them my sophomore and senior seasons).  Just thought I would get that off my chetst.

When we went to ND for a campus visit after my son was accepted there, we met with a stuck up prick of an admission counselor.
Not knowing that blue and gold flowed in my sons veins he proceeded to slam MU telling him "I am sure MU is giving you everything to go there, they'd even send a limo to your house."
He then proceeded to slam my son basically stating "you aren't special here at ND, you are just an average person we grant acceptance to."  "We don't give merit scholarships because everyone here deserves them"

That sealed the deal for me and luckily my son made the right choice.
I love the question on the admission form "Do you have any relatives with buildings named after them?" :o

I still remember the question on the Marquette application when I applied.

"If you could take a cross-country roadtrip with anyone, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?"

Had that been on ND's application you'd probably get loads of assholes saying "Oh, I'd want to go with my grandfather Mick O'McDoyle, for whom your nice O'McDoyle hall is named for because....blah blah blah." or some world leader "whose teachings I try to follow." BS.

I on the other hand answered that I'd want to go with Snoopy, because as a cartoon character, he'd be a 2-dimensional figure in real life, kind of like a cardboard cutout, and this would free up some cargo space (cooler?) plus he's a very philosophical dog. We could all learn a lot.

You have to be kidding? I'm not offended anything but calling the Mary, the Mother of God, a bitch is absolutely intolerable.  Marquette is a Catholic school and should be hold it's student to a standard corresponds with the values it teaches.  The student who wears such shirts should have been told to take off the shirts or be kicked out of BC. I can't believe that any Marquette fan would think this is classic.  It's shameful and disturbing.

I probably don't want to re-start this debate, but please keep in mind that many Catholics, including myself, find this t-shirt very, very offensive.  Ann Arbor is not a person -- at least as far as I know.  "Notre Dame" (actual translation:  "Our Lady") is an real person that a lot of people don't really like to hear referred to in that way.

I know, I know.  I should lighten up, it's only a basketball game, etc.  I'm just saying...

Just remember, the shirt is aimed at the school (which happens to be named Notre Dame), their students, and the fact that we've pretty much owned them the last five years, not at "Our Lady."

Whether shirt is aimed at a school or not is absolute irrelevant to what it says other than the fact that some troglodyte uses that argument justify wearing such a heinously disrespectful shirt.

that t-shirt idea was actually mine, i had them printed up when i was a junior during the 2003/2004 season.  thank god we won that one at home.  there should be around 230 floating out there.

If you were really the creator of those shirts you ought to be embarrassed.

I can understand and appreciate why you find them offensive.  Personally, I never saw it that way.  I took it to mean Notre Dame's basketball team is Marquette's basketball team's bitch.  The whole French translation of Notre Dame actually being close to that is why I (and many others) found the shirts funny.

If you don't like the shirts, ignore it, no one who wears one actually things those things of Mary.  I am sure there are better uses of your time then lecturing others on a message board.  Myself, I have time to do that, so this is my mini lecture, "don't judge other people while posting under potentially offensive names."

is it really necessary to post 3 times in a row.  yes we get it that your feelings are hurt and you are deeply offended.  to let you know, i am not embarrassed at all, nor should i be.  apparently puns (or play on words) are not as funny to some.  if you are not a fan of the shirt, then so be it, others are.  personally, i find the shirts with the middle finger sticking up to be more offensive.  little kids don't read every shirt, but they sure look at most pictures.  in my opinion the middle finger shirt for both notre dame and cincy are offensive, but do i criticize the people that made them or wear them... no, because that's their choice.  warrior1996, while i respect your right to give your opinion, i do not have to agree with it and neither does everyone on this board.  please stop making multiple posts trying to lobby everyone to your side of the debate.  some people hate the shirt, some people love the shirt.

how bout we refocus on the main reason we go to the Bradley center, namely the team.  we have a big game coming up and all people can sound off about is a t-shirt.  good thing someone started the "i love thread" so that people can get off the negative train.  we have always said on here that people have the right to have whatever view they want of a topic, this one isn't any different.  truth is, you can't read too much into shirts.

If you are not offended, why would cheer for a Catholic school?   You do know that Marquette is a Catholic School, don't you?  Comparing the term Warrior to the word Bitch is so strikingly pathetic, I'd be surprised if you ever set foot on the Marquette campus.  I could care less if people are "bothered" by the T-shirt.  The fact is that such a T-shirt has absolutely no place at a Jesuit Catholic institution such as Marquette.  I would expect such behavior from the knuckle dragging mouth breathers at Wisconsin or UWM.

For fear of making this thread even longer.   You do realize that a number of Marquette students and alumni are not Catholic correct?

I know...some of us are heathens that eat meat on Fridays during Lent (and enjoy it), but it doesn't mean we didn't appreciate our Marquette education or root for Marquette in sports.

The fact that you are calling all non-Catholics "knuckle dragging mouth breathers" shows your ignorance.  And yes, I'm smart enough to be offended by that.

Now, please keep personal insults off the board, and we can all get along. This thread was about hating Notre Dame, not hating each other.

Then again, with Notre Dame being Catholic, I guess it would be hard for you to hate them.
