As most complain about higher taxes due to the costs pertaining to more and more inmates...
I'm not sure a restraining order and rehab wouldn't have solved the problem. I make no excuses for the guy, but it seems like a heavy punishment for a first offense. Either way...very sad.

Given that two of the charges for which he was convicted were "violating a domestic abuse injunction," I doubt very much that a restraining order would have solved the problem. It seems that McCants' inability to abide by a restraining order
was the problem.
Also, keep in mind that he's being given credit for time served since October, or about nine months. Plus, most states give some credit (often day-for-day credit) for good behavior - which usually qualifies as anything short of stabbing a guard - while in custody. So, all in all, Mr. McCants should soon be, if he is not aready, a free man.

I know PR's post is really OT, but this sentence (or lack thereof) blew me away. Unprovoked attack, on tape, and the guy gets two years probation? There should be people rioting in the streets on this one. This is nearly attempted murder the way the cop went to town on the woman.

The way the State charged the defendant opened up the possibility for probation because the seriousness of the battery was premised on the injuries suffered by the victim. Luckily for the girl, she was not seriously injured and did not suffer much "bodily harm" despite the video. There was also (ridiculous) testimony that she provoked the accident by pushing the guy up against a wall before he went crazy on her. The defendant admitted the incident occured and agreed that he was not provoked after his initial response. His defense counsel also made a wise choice in waiving the right to a jury and seeking a bench trial. Those factors as well as the fact that the guy had no prior criminal background led to the sentence of probation. I don't agree with the decision...I think the guy is obviously a scumbag and think that these types of crimes should be treated much more seriously and punished with jail time.

This doesn't come as a surprise to anyone who spent time on water street, when UWM was a big story. Used to see Dylan Paige beating on his girl on a regular basis. They had to be seprated in a bar bathroom because he had her by the throat, feet about a foot off the ground.(Heard they are married now!) Most of those UWM guys were real jags. Those are the type of kids a program gets when they hire scum like Bruce Pearl. Hopefully we don't hear any stories like this about MU kids under Buzz.
