Title: MU players in the NBA
Post by: Sir Lawrence on June 16, 2009, 07:41:42 AM
From this morning's Journal/Sentinel:

Productive pros

Marquette and Wisconsin show up in a positive way in a data-related analysis of the last 20 National Basketball Association drafts posted at ESPN Insider.

The Golden Eagles and Badgers, of course, don't get there by the total number of players chosen in the last 20 drafts. Duke and Arizona tie for that honor (28), followed by UCLA (26), Kansas (22) and North Carolina (22).

Over the last 20 drafts, seven MU players were taken (Tony Smith, Jim McIlvaine, Amal McCaskill, Chris Crawford, Dwyane Wade, Travis Diener and Steve Novak), as were five UW players (Michael Finley, Rashard Griffith, Paul Grant, Devin Harris and Alando Tucker).

MU and UW are among the top schools that supply NBA draft picks who perform better than they are expected to perform in the league given the slot they were drafted.

On a per-pick basis, Marquette ranks tied for sixth and Wisconsin tied for ninth among schools that have delivered players to the NBA who have been productive.

MU's ranking is mostly due to Wade, the only all-star selection MU has given to the NBA in the last 20 years.

Wisconsin is tied with North Carolina in the ranking, even though 17 more Tar Heels were drafted. Harris was chosen for his first All-Star Game this season.

Wake Forest, by far, is the leader in this ranking, with three of the Demon Deacons' seven draftees becoming NBA all-stars.

Georgetown, Connecticut, UNLV and Utah are next at delivering the most productive players given their draft slots.

The schools delivering the players to the NBA whose performances are worse than expected are Louisville, Seton Hall, Missouri, Memphis and North Carolina State.

Take THAT Calipari and Pitino!

Does that mean that Calipari and Pitino are GOOD coaches because they get more out of players than NBA coaches do, or are they BAD coaches because they don't prepare their players well for the next level.

Not exactly on point but when names of Warriors and Badgers are mentioned in the same article, I like to think of the days of Kojis, Thompson, Meminger, Chones, McNeil, Lucas, Ellis, Walton, Tatum, Lee, Rivers and probably more.  Then there was the Badgers with Wes Mathews and maybe another person.  Ah Yes.  Those were the days.
