Seems like there were/are a lot of former MU athletic department officials looking to move up to higher profile AD positions.

Did any of these guys interview at MU?

I know Mack didn't, he wants to be at a school that plays football, as do most AD's.  That's the key, usually, to moving up.

Cords tried to get the Boston College job and one of the strikes against him was the lack of football experience (though he did have that at UTEP for two years and as an assistant coach at Washington State).

Honestly, it didn't seem like many people interviewed for the MU AD job....the reports in the paper were basically that no one did.

I am not sure the MU AD job is viewed all that highly in the profession frankly.  I mean, you have one sport that everyone cares about, hardly any on-campus facilities to speak of outside of the McGuire Center, and a bunch of sports that are fairly non-competitive in the BE conference.  Outside of hiring a decent basketball coach every so often, there isn't much to the job.

There were over 60 people that applied for the job.  Marquette interviewed no one.

Hmmm...

that doesn't really speak well of MU. I mean, at least SOME of them had to be qualified, right?

Even if it was only 2 or 3.

With this said, I've never worked in an athletic department, so I guess I don't really know how these things normally work. Maybe schools don't normally do a lot of formal "interviews" but maybe more casual off of the books stuff. I have no idea.

BTW, I shouldn't have said "not much to the job."  I should have said, "not much high profile work to the job" compared to other positions at football schools.

The difference is typically in the size of your staff, budgets, revenues, etc.  In many ways, being at a football school can make the day to day tasks a little easier (though the expectations are certainly very high) because typically there is an Associate AD that runs football or runs basketball, etc. Most of the folks I knew at schools like MU were wearing about 3 or 4 hats which is tough to do.  My friends at UCLA, USC or Oklahoma it was more of a 8am to 6pm type of job.

Great news, grats Mack :)

FTA:  " Rhoades emerged as the selection of choice following an extensive national search conducted by an 11-person committee appointed by Khator."

Wow... I thought you just hired whomever you saw first.  Houston should have talked to the MU administration before they wasted all that time and money.
