ONE ON ONE with Travis Diener, Magic guard

How does a guy from Fond du Lac, Wis. become a Chicago Bears fan?

That's a good question. The whole family is Packers fans. But when I was little, I was 3 and the Bears won the Super Bowl. So I guess it just stuck with me from then on. I don't remember any of it, but that's what my parents told me -- that I was glued to the TV watching the Bears play at that young age. And I've been a Bears fan ever since.

Any Bears memorabilia hanging in your parents' sports bar?

No, no, no, no. They're Packer fans, and most of the people where I'm from are Packer fans. So you're not going to see any Bears memorabilia up in that bar.

Does that mean the Super Bowl party is at your place?

Yeah. I'm trying to maybe go to the game. We'll see what happens.

How can the Bears upset the Indianapolis Colts?

They've got to keep that (Colts) offense off the field. They've got to keep Peyton Manning on the sidelines. And they've got to find ways to score. If they get their running game going and can keep Manning on the sidelines, I think they've got a chance. And their defense has to create turnovers like it did last week.

Your alma mater, Marquette, was ranked 15th in last week's AP poll. How has it been able to maintain such a high level of play since you and Dwyane Wade were there?

They've got great players. Coach (Tom) Crean does a great job of recruiting these guys. They haven't taken a step back at all from the years when I played and went to the Final Four. They were ranked to start the season, and then they dropped out and struggled. But they've won, I think, five or six straight and are playing really well. They're a team that can make a run deep into the (NCAA) tournament. They've got great guard play. And I still follow them very closely. They've been on TV a lot, so I've gotten a chance to see them. I wish them the best of luck.

Both Wisconsin and Marquette are in the top 15. Isn't your home state supposed to be known for hockey instead of basketball?

Crazy, isn't it? Wisconsin, in general, has come a long way in basketball -- Wisconsin, Marquette, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee has been good the past five years.

Preach.

Although I realized today that actually I want the Bears to win. The NFC needs a W in the big game. It's been far too long.

yeah.. agreed.. and what's this about urlacher playing offense?  I could see him as part of a mix-it-up nickel package on 3rd downs but honestly, if they got this far playing the way they did, why change it?  Indy is known for their offense.. seems to me that urlacher, the defensive juggernaut that he is, would be best kept rested for defending against that offense.  *shrug*

Travis always listed Brian Urlacher as his favorite athlete on the Jumbotron meet the player.

It's the same one where Terry Sanders listed his favorite book as The Bible.

I can wait another year for the NFC to win, the last thing I need at school is to hear a bunch of annoying Bear fans hooting and hollering about "Da Bears"...

He's always had the Bears as his favorite team in the media guide.  Almost as head-scratching as Pieper's favorite team being the Miami Dolphins.
