very surprised this has not  received  more attention

Great for Lazar.  Practice and play against great competition.

Great for the program.  Can tell any recruit --come to MU work hard and look at the exposure / opportunities you will receive.

Great for Lazar!   What an honor!    From a purely selfish perspective, how much of a time commitment does this require?    Will this leave Mo, Cubi, JB, and Fulce as the only upperclassmen working with the newbies?   Could this hurt their assimilation?

I'm more worried that Bo's system will knock about 30% off his scoring ability.   ;)

But think of what Lazar will gain!

- Skill at watching the shot clock tick down before the offense starts.
- Walking up-court after an inbounds
- "Tough Big-10 D" aka standing there with your hands up and your eyes shut

The pros definitely outweigh the cons.  :)

good for bo.  bad for lazar.  it's going to take buzz a couple weeks to knock the basketball mold off of lazar after the "grimaced used car salesman" get done with him.

I may be wrong, but I do not think Bo will be teaching this team the swing offense. Due to time constraints you keep things more basic. You also have more offensive talent than you normally have on a team, which all leads to coaching the team differently. What I am interested in seeing is how much playing time Hayward gets and what position he plays.

Bo is just going to reinforce the fundamentals like he always does.  It would be nice to see him put Zar at the three and get some more experience putting the ball on the floor as well as playing his more natural position.

Bad for Lazar?  What!!!??

Come on, how is this bad for Lazar?  The coach being bad for his game.  All I see are ups for Zar.

1.  Playing with other players in NCAA-talking about own struggle working on different moves, etc.

2.  Playing in Serbia.  Going around the world to a whole new land and playing ball.

3.  Playing against competitive players.

4.  Hearing another coaching perspective (hate it or not, Bo can coach and he will show Zar a thing or two, redefine his game-never- but a new perspective and knowledge source to come from is a VERY GOOD thing.

I just don't see how the experience could be bad for the individual?

As far as the team goes, the tournament lasts until July 12th, so figure a few weeks after that Lazar will be the leader of the team from August until next March (April would be wayyy to optimistic).  I don't see that being a problem.

Live it up Lazar!!

There is the little matter of tryouts in Colorado Springs from 6/16 to 6/18 as 20 to 25 players will try out.

Thinking optimally, but still it's a good thing for Lazar as an individual and his game.

There are no tryouts for the World University Games - Lazar is on the team. The tryouts mentioned in June are for the U19 FIBA tournament per Zaq's blog - two different teams.

Remember when Crean was mad at Izzo for leaving off Diener on some team, for one of his players (Chris Allen?)?

Based on what Pillardean is saying, Lazar will miss their first two weeks on campus, presuming they all come in for the start of the second summer session.

Besides, they can't have full team practices until mid-November, anyway.

According to this article about Pondexter...there are tryouts.

The USA Basketball website does refer to team trials in June for the World University Games.

Yes, there are tryouts 6/16 to 6/18.  The Zagsblog item confuses matters.

pillar,

I was making a joke because I (and many others) hate bo ryan.

I'm well aware of the benefits for lazar, and even though bo makes me want to vomit, I'm not foolish enough to say he's not a good basketball coach.  I'm sure he will help lazar with his pivots and hands high close-outs.
