Title: Updated Rivals Rankings
Post by: bma725 on April 15, 2009, 10:11:38 PM
They put out their final top 150 for 2009 today.  Here's where the MU recruits stand:

Maymon #47...down from #46
Cadougan #73...down from #60
Williams #104...down from #99

http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?SID=910&Year=2009&ra_key=1642

So far both ESPN and Rivals have updated their rankings and the MU recruits have dropped on both lists.  Bob Gibbons put out his top 150 in February and should have another one sometime in May.  Scout hasn't updated their top 100 and HoopScoop doesn't usually put out their final list until June, so we'll have to see what happens there.  USA Today(Rob Harrington) usually has an update sometime in May as well.  HoopMasters usually takes forever to do their final list, and I've got no idea what's going on at PrepStars anymore...though I'm not sure anyone there has an idea of what's going on either.

Well, seeing that Maymon ONLY slipped one despite winning the state championship and being the state POY, I'm a little miffed. But it IS only one spot.

Cadougan had the hype and probably because his team didn't have a higher exposure than some other players below him (who might have jumped him), that's a doable ranking.

The same with Williams. He was hurt part of the year so that should have some impact on his ranking. Glad he didn't slip far.

Just my opinion based on their past comments, but Cadougan's fall had mostly to do with his weight.  Rivals has made a big deal about mentioning that he's overweight, needs to lose weight, is out of shape etc whenever they evaluate him.  So he gets downgraded more because of that than his actual play.

If that's so, then I guess Damon Key was like #400 back in the day! LOL!

The end of last May we had a discussion here about recruiting ratings.  This is now the 5th time in 8 years that our recruits have dropped in rankings as a whole.

I had mentioned to Mr. Hayward back then that we should wait until all the rankings come out because for whatever reason, more often then not our guys seem to drop some.  Still a great recruiting class.

Based on Rosiak's recent update with Junior, it sounds like he's really focusing on getting his weight down and into the best shape he can since he knows the conditioning program here is so rigorous.  We'll have to see if his weight does end up being an issue. I have a feeling that it won't be.

It would be interesting to see what would happen to those same player's rankings if they got picked up by NC or Duke, or Indiana.

(Un-tealed Indiana)

I was thinking that exact same thing.  I don't know the inner workings of recruiting and signing players, but it does seem awfully fishy that a lot if not most MU players see their rankings drop upon signing with MU.  Over time, there simply cannot be that many one-offs like E. Williams being injured, Cadougan's weight coming to a head at just the right time, etc.  Had they signed with NC, Duke, or, yes, even Indiana, Indiana, I don't think we see these changes.  It is what it is, I guess.  But it still sucks.

I would not worry too much about these rankings. Their college success will depend on how hard they work and how much they buy into the team concept. Maymon sounds like he sacrificed personal statistics to be a total team player. I do not think Cadougan starts next year, because I expect Odom and Buyckes to start at the guard spots. I do not think we use the three guard lineup anymore.  We have Maymon, Butler and Williams to man the three spot and with that talent and depth I just do not see consistantly playing three guards.

Anti-Marquette bias!!

If these guys were going to Duke, they would have moved up in the rankings.  Only half kidding...

Ratings are all subjective.   The bottom line is that we have a lot of new players coming in who seem to have talent.    If everything falls quickly in place, we could still make the dance.   If Buzz can coach them as well as he recruits them, it is going to be a great ride.

If our recruits went down, whose recruits went up?

Does anyone have any new info on where Marquette ranks for the entire recruiting class? I care more about that, than individual rankings.

Only two of the services have updated their class rankings.

ESPN has MU at #13.  http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/classrankings?classyear=2009&classmonth=4

HoopScoop has MU at #1.  http://www.hoopscooponline.com/members/toprecruitingclasses-classof2009.asp

The rest usually don't do updates until the end of May or early June.
