When was the last time someone at MU averaged at least 16 points and 8 rebounds. Jackson in '03 was close but not quite.

You have to go back quite a way to find anyone.
Trevor Powell almost made it in 1989-90. He had 16.7PPG and 7.9RPG.
David Boone almost made it in 1986-87 when he had 15.5PPG and 8.8RPG, and he almost made it in 1985-86 when he had 15.3 and 10.6.
The last one to actually have it was Bo Ellis in 1974-75. He had 16.3PPG and 10.3RPG.
Damon Key also just missed in 1993-94 with 15.6 PPG and 7.9 RPG. Prior to Ellis, Maurice Lucas just missed it with 15.8 PPG and 10.6 RPGin 1973-74 and Jim Chones met the mark in 1970-71 with 20.5 PPG and 11.9 RPG.
Nice job Lazar. I hadn't realized just how rare his numbers were. Only the third person in almost 40 years to do that at MU.

Powell is an underappreciated Marquette great! I think that was actually his freshman year. He probably regressed a little bit as the years went on, but he was a very, very good player. It could be that he wasn't O'Neill's type...Chicos might be able to shed some more light on that though.

It was his junior year he put up those numbers. The next year he had Key, Mac, Logtermann and Ron Curry so he didn't have to shoot as much, but he still averaged almost 8 rebounds a game.

Trev wasn't a Marquette great.....he was a solid to very good player on a bunch of rotten teams. His senior season was very productive....KO relied on Trev quite a bit -- there was just more talent to work with that year.
I remember he had a terrific game against ND when we beat them at home one year.
trevor was picked 2nd team all-conference, so apparently coaches thought he was tough, though not a superstar. he was held back because his 1991 class was there as MU had losing seasons three of four years for the first time since 1951 - 1954. I have him ranked as Marquette's 55th best player of 667, so I wouldn't quite rank him as a superstar, but I believe you are right - a very underrated player.
When a weak class comes through you can't blame the players that are producing (Tony Smith and Trevor for their three years together). You lose because you don't have enough top line players like Smith and Powell.
As for Lazar - AWESOME. The question is will the big guys coming in let him become a dominant shooter who can go 19/5 instead of having to shoulder the burden underneath? He is gone underneath and done a great job because of our lack of size - I am sure looking forward to freeing him up to shoot.
