Jimmy Butler was an Honorable Mention selection last year. Either he was much better than expected or the JCs last year were really good. Despite the slap at the JCs by 4everTheComplainer, I am very excited for these two new additions to the roster in 09-10.
Shouldn't Buycks' school be Ottumwa - not Centerville? I'm not familiar with the schools. If we are getting two of the top ten rated JC players in the country I am not disappointed!

You certainly have a positive attitude. >:( By the way, NJCAA has a membership of 300 schools, most of which have men's basketball.
I know I shouldn't care about Mbakwe, but I have to admit I'm thrilled to see us have two first-teamers and him be a third-teamer.
Could have used some minutes from him this year, but glad we have traded up, and am excited about the overall class, and sure it will help me eventually get over the Three Amigos being gone. Bring on 2009-10!
Mbakwe's last minute exit from Marquette killed a potential Final Four run. Marquette was left with no time to replace him with someone who could have contributed in the front court. With what Buzz has done on the recruiting front do you doubt he could have found someone who could have contributed if Mbakwe act like a man and announces his intentions at a reasonable time? All this underlines the screw over of Trevor and his "advisers."
Marquette took care of him and he %^$&#! on his teammates and coaches.
I have no knowledge about anything so this is just a thought that pop in my head. Considering the Hazel situation and how Buzz keeps everything quiet, maybe Buzz told Mbakwe not to come back. Mbakwe could of broke some team rule and they agreed to keep it quiet.

Looking back at the guards in last years NJCAA 1st team list....the best we *should* hope for is that they play as well as Maze and/or Kitchen.

Bobby Maze (TN) - 25.1mpg, 8.2ppg, 3.2apg, 2.4rpg
Bryan Sherrer (South Alabama) - 20.9mpg, 5.3ppg, 1.6apg, 1.4rpg
Derwin Kitchen (FSU) - 25.7mpg, 7.9ppg, 2.5apg, 4.6rpg
Note that Maze went to the same juco as DJO. Though Maze played a year at Oklahoma prior to attending Hutchinson.
Though if we got about 8ppg from both of them next year, maybe I shouldn't be trying to temper enthusiasm...
FYI, Buzz told the Milwaukee JS he was "shocked" when Mbakwe left hours before the start of the fall term. Trevor didn't even have the B%^$! to tell the coaches face to face he left a voice message on a cell phone.
He used Marquette in 2008 and knew it last summer when he was using the Marquette facilities, tuition and training table. It was a free ride. A lot of us actually worked and earn what we received and said thank you It's an old fashion concept that has to do with fundamental ethics.
I thought it was Darius Johnson-Odom.
Is Darian another way of saying Darius or something? Pretty rough to get the listing of a first team All American wrong..

I'm not sticking up for what he did, but in my opinion that's a very controversial comment on so many levels. First, his coach flew off in the middle of the night on him. He learned a tough lesson. Second, who really takes advantage of who in college basketball? Don't get me wrong, I understand your point, and he could have handled it better, but I'm not sure what these kids owe MU or any school. To me, the only people he owed anything to were his teammates, and he proved himself to be a jerk in that sense.
Buycks, Johnson-Odom named All-Americans
Dwight Buycks and Darius Johnson-Odom each were named first team NJCAA All-American on Thursday.
Buycks, of Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa Iowa, and Johnson-Odom, of Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan., were two of nine players who earned first team honors.
Buycks, of course, has already signed with MU while Johnson-Odom, who committed orally on April 1, is expected to sign next week.
The spring signing period begins on April 15.

Kind of an odd comment...I could just as easily say that looking at last year's list, or previous years' lists, the best we should hope for is that they play as well or better than Jimmy Butler, Jared Quayle (USU), Marcus Thornton (LSU), Tyler Kepkay (Utah), Tyler Smith (TN), Tyrone Brazelton (WKU)...
Fact is, I can just as easily pick names off the same lists and conclude we should hope for Thornton and Smith, as you can conclude we should hope for Maze and Kitchen. Last year's list, is no more meaningful than previous years, etc.

Not Odd at all. I simply picked all the guards from last years list 1st team that went to the NCAA, and posted how they did their first year out of Juco. Yes, Buycks and DJO might exceed expectations, but I'm just trying to set my expectations to something reasonable (as opposed to expecting both to score 20+ ppg).
Can you compare the list to last years? Maybe, maybe not. But last year Maze was 1st team, and Buycks was honorable mention. Based on that, I suppose I could argue that this years list is probably much worse than the players on this years list.
Instead, I'm conceding that Buycks improved, and am hoping he turns in numbers similar to what Maze did.
Not tearing him down, just setting my expectations - and possibly helping others set theirs. If you disagree, and think he'll exceed that - that's cool. But I don't see how you can reasonably come to that conclusion.

Who says I'm reasonable?
They're going to be first year DI players. I look at em as slightly more advanced freshman. I think expecting 8-10 ppg is fair. Hopefully we get lucky and one is a star right away but that's rare.
I do not hope for much out of either of them. No more than 35 pts. per game and 20 rebounds a piece. Oh yeah, and leading MU to the Final Four. Is that hoping for too much? (As a Cub fan I never have too high of expections.) ;D

There are 221 D1 Junior college teams. Assuming 13 players per roster, thats 2873 players.

So the answer is yes. Take out the 10 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team AAs, and there there are about 2843 Juco players who don't make one of the AA teams (in D1).
Bob Lackey, Ric Cobb, Jerome Whitehead, Lloyd Walton were impact JC players for Al McGuire. Also Gary Brell, if he was a JC transfer.
Raymonds had Sam Worthen and Artie Green. Also Odel Ball if he was a JC transfer.
Crean had Marcus Jackson.
Buzz Williams has Jimmy Butler.
You could put together a very good team with these MU JC players and there are probably some I forgot.
I do not remember MU ever having a JC player that was a bad citizen.
Obviously some of Crean's JC recruits were not very good players, but that does not mean all JC players cannot play. I think both Odom and Buykes will be very good, but like Butler it will take them a half a season to get adjusted to division 1.
Should we be asking how many first years players have an immediate impact in Division One basketball? I'd consider incoming freshman and JUCOs. At Marquette the three Amigos, Doc Rivers, Michael Wilson come to mind. Going back in Marquette history the biggest immediate impact JUCO was Sam Worthen.
Bob Lackey made an immediate impact.
Jantin & I are friends with a guy in Minny who is very tight with MN AAU folks. He told us from day 1 that Trevor was a headcase and that he would never stay at MU. If only TC was privy to such info. TC's vetting process was unbelievably weak.
