Updates, updates, updatesWritten by: noreply@blogger.com (Tim Blair)The news flow surrounding the Marquette hoops program has slowed a bit in the early stages of the off-season but in the last few days several developments emerged:
- Dale Layer, Buzz Williams' top assistant coach, was announced as the new head coach at Liberty University (http://www.jsonline.com/sports/goldeneagles/42711937.html). Layer was formerly the head coach at Colorado State and an assistant at Liberty before landing at MU. The Buzz Williams coaching tree sprouts, apparently. Talk about it at MUScoop (http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=14483.0).
- Todd Rosiak recently completed three fantastic updates on the incoming class of 2009 (with more to come). First he updated readers on Junior Cadougan (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/42538817.html). This week he took an in-depth look at Jeronne Maymon (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/42693582.html). Then, Rosiak delivered with a look at Dwight Buycks (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/42743242.html). Seriously, if you don't get a little fired up about the incoming recruits, you probably don't have a pulse.
- Looking ahead to the 2009 NBA draft, soon-to-be Marquette graduate Wesley Matthews has been invited to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/42565242.html).
- Peter Vescey of the New York Post completed a two-part series on the legendary Al McGuire. As you'd expect, these articles are a blast to read. Here's part one (http://www.nypost.com/seven/04052009/sports/moresports/mcguire_an_unorthodox_legend_163057.htm). Here's part two (http://www.nypost.com/seven/04072009/sports/moresports/mcguire_consistently_one_step_ahead_163280.htm).
- Back to the commitment of Darius Johnson-Odom -- check out these videos (http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=14419.0).
........stay tuned.

Since I never miss an opportunity to be a wise guy...
Layer is still the former head coach at Colorado State.
thanks for catching that....edited
Does the "...stay tuned" at the end imply that some big news is coming soon? Or am I simply reading too much into that?

Every good reporter needs a good sign-off line. A super-extended ellipsis followed by a cryptic "stay tuned" is as good as any. I mean it's no Al Roker, "That's what's going on around the country, here's what's happening in your neck of the woods."
But it's ................................................................................. darn close.
Just so it looks like we had something extra to say, here's another update. I'm not going to put it in the blog for fear I'll end up screwing up the whole message, but HoopScoop updated their rankings and MU is now tied with UNC for the #1 recruiting class in the country. UNC wins with tie breaker with higher average per player, but both have 39 total points using HoopScoops system.
For those that don't know, they do a weird ranking system where they lump everyone in the class together regardless of whether they are HS, Prep or JUCO players and then break them into levels. Points are awarded for 1-5, 6-10, 11-40, 41-70, 71-100, 101-300 and 300+.
Right MU has this for the incoming class:
Williams, Cadougan, Maymon, Buycks: 8 points each all between 11-40
Johnson Odom: 4 points, between 71-100
Roseboro: 3 points, between 101-300

At least Hoopscoop gives some credit to the quality of JUCOs, not like other sites. Thanks
One more update for the day. ESPN put out their final top 100 for 2009 today. Junior stayed at #77, Maymon fell to #79, Williams is now #95. Oddly though, Williams and Maymon have the exact same grade, so how there is a 16 spot difference between the two I'm not sure.

Do the guys evaluating for ESPN actually see the kids play?

Are sure that's correct since there aren't any recruits from Chicago in our next class?

They do, but they don't get to see everyone. They watched Cadougan in February, Maymon in January, and Williams in October 2008.
What you have to remember when looking at ESPN's rankings is that these guys are new to it. Bob Gibbons left ESPN last year and was replaced by Paul Biancardi. He's most known for committing recruiting violations at Ohio State, and he's never been thought of as a particularly great talent evaluator. These are the first rankings he's ever done. They also have Reggie Rankin, another former college assistant, and Antonio Williams a former NBA scout. Since then they've sort of changed their philosophy in how they do the rankings, and seem to be basing more on NBA potential.
So if you look at Gibbons last ESPN ranking, Maymon was #33, Williams #67 and Cadougan at #79. That's probably more valid in terms of a ranking given how long Gibbons has been doing this, and if you look at his new ranking on his own the players are much higher ranked than they are by ESPN.

Maymon lived in Chicago for a couple years as a kid, that's why he's so high.
Stay tuned ...
Courage.
