Title: [Rosiak's Blog] Matthews to Portsmouth

Matthews to Portsmouth

As it turns out, only one of MU's 'Big Three' will be taking part in the Portsmouth Invitational this year.

Wesley Matthews has accepted an invitation and will be playing on an eight-man team with, among others, Pittsburgh's Levance Fields.

The games take place Wed.-Sat. in Portsmouth, Va.

Dominic James, who was listed on a roster over the weekend on Portsmouth's official web site, will not take part, MU coach Buzz Williams said on Monday.

Considering James is still roughly five weeks removed from surgery for a fractured left foot, that's not at all surprising.

He's since been removed from the roster and replaced with another player.

Last week, Jerel McNeal said he'd turned down an invitation to play in Portsmouth, which is a big annual showcase for prospective NBA players not expected to be selected among the top 20 or so picks.

Neither Matthews nor James returned multiple calls seeking comment.

I wonder why Jerel turned it down.

Who were previous MU cagers that suited up for Portsmouth?

Diener, right? Merritt? Crawford?

Portsmouth is the place for guys on the fringe of getting drafted, it really can only hurt McNeal to go there right now.

Exactly.
The place to go these days for guys with a chance at the bottom half of the first/early second is the NBA's pre-draft camp which, if I'm not mistaken, is moving back to Chicago this year after a few years in Orlando.
Not sure when those invites go out.

I know Robert Jackson did.  He did well if I recall correctly.
