Title: If you have ever had an ill thought of Bob Hurley...
Post by: mikeDEANmeminger on April 06, 2009, 09:07:50 AM
All you have to do it read the book "The Miracle of St. Anthony". Every bad thing you have ever thought of the guy will immediately leave your mind (or at least it should). The guy is a living legend for a reason and none of his former players will ever utter a bad word about him for a reason.

Agreed.  But, quite a few MU fans might never agree after the Tyshawn Taylor situation.

It may look like Hurley did Marquette wrong from our point of view, but again, Hurley looks out for what is best for his players...Not Marquette's or any other program. And it looks like TT is doing OK for himself down at Kansas, with the advice of Hurley

Except that Hurley has "called out" MU several times in the media.  I love what he does for his guys, but the MU treatment was uncalled for in my estimation.  Taylor had signed with MU and MU responded as quickly as it could under the circumstances given that there really was no staff in place.  Taylor was not hurt by a few days of inconvenience.

I agree 100% about how if you read "The Miracle of St. Anthony" you would change your mind about Hurley. Not only that, but its a great book on its own if you love basketball.

Second, when did Hurley "call out" Mu in the media? I haven't seen it. All I've ever seen him say is that MU didn't call right away when Crean left, and after Crean left there was some reluctance b/c they didn't know Buzz. That's far from "calling out" MU. It's just a fact and if you were honest you would have done the same thing in the situation.

There were numerous articles in the New Jersey newspapers and in Zag's blog as ell as in the electronic media ovelast April and over the past year with Hurley's disparaging remarks.  just go back through the message boards for the last year on your own.

It is possible to be a great person, but act like a douche from time to time.

Case in point with Hurley and Marquette.

I think it stemmed from the fact that TT stated he wanted BUZZ to get the job.  Buzz wanted a chance to sit down with TT and discuss things before they issued the release.  Hurley was uppset that we did not jus send it out a few days after Crean left.  MU's AD stated that Coachs have nothing to do with the releaase and that they needed a letter from TT.  Hurley came out and said if they do not give it they will never get another kid from St Anthony's.  I think Mu handled it the right way, I think Hurley had too much coffee that week.

In playing the role of the "great protector" Hurley unnecessarily gave MU a black eye in the NYC area media and beyond.

It was a self aggrandizing move which was an overreaction and fairly screams "now do you see how important I am"?

He and TT would have obtained the same result with no tarnishing of anyone's name with a little quiet behind the scenes diplomacy.

Hurley got a spotlight moment at MU's expense.  However, I'm sure that Buzz has put it behind him and moved on.

There can't be too much bad blood between Buzz and Hurley, it looks like Marquette is in the running for one of his players... Devon Collier is a four star recruit for the 2010 class. 6'7 205lb power forward.

Hope you are right.  I suspect that all parties were big enough to put it behind themselves and move forward.  Good for us, for sure.

I've seen all of it. The worst he said was Marquette slept on calling him and/or Tyshawn Taylor right away after Crean bolted. That's hardly a long history. You guys are blowing all of it way, way, way out of proportion.

I think that the main comments were when we wouldn't release Taylor form his LOI right away until he talked to Buzz, I think he took some shots at Marquette about how unprofessional it was and how he has never dealt with anything as bad as this. I'm kind of paraphrasing but am pretty sure those were the types of comments that angered people. The comments you mention were right after Crean left and MU didn't call, he made more comments a few days to a week after Crean left.

"Legend"....who said?   Please make sure to clear it through the "legend police" here first.   ;)

+1. This is absolutely the case.
