Title: Will Buzz Get a Raise?
Post by: Tugg Speedman on March 31, 2009, 09:26:15 PM
Buzz, I believe is making 600k/year (is this correct?).  Almost 1/9 of what Calipari is making.  1/3 of Bennett.  Far less than Keno Davis etc. etc.

Buzz is not an unproven commodity anymore.  He coach the team to a top 10 ranking.  Recruiting wise, he has a very good class coming in.  He represents the University well.

Most important, he did not make Cottingham and Fr. Wild look stupid by hiring him exactly one year ago.

Given all this, I would not be surprised if we hear his contract has been re-worked and he gets a nice raise.  He deserves it.  Think they will announce it next week on his one-year anniversary (which i believe is April 8)?

If they do not, and if (repeat if) he outperforms again next year, he could be whispered for other jobs.  We don't need that now.

The University sold out weekday games this year (Uconn) and a little bit of money now will go a long way later down the road.

Take Buzz from 600k to over 1m.  It's a smart investment.

Thoughts?

I thought he was making around 1.2 million, with it being more backloaded. So maybe he's making 600,000 now, but it is built to be raised each year. I don't have anything to really back it up, I just thought I remember that being the number when he was hired.

No raise. Win with your own cooking, then play the leverage game.

See Keno Davis, one year at Drake with someone else's recruits and off to Providence.  If Buzz shows anything he will get calls from others long before he wins with his own cooking.

jesus c****, let the man coach and recruit for at least 2 years before we start tossing that kinda money.  College basketball has gone insane with salaries.  Crean got $1.8m from us because he had one postseaons to brag about, now he's well over $2 at IU.  Thad Matta has had one standout season at OSU (with 2 NBA'ers) and now he's in the $2.3m range.  Buzz did well this past season, but everyone expected 20+ wins with the cast coming back he had.  anything less would have been a failure from many parties.  $600k and reins to a Big East program is pretty nice for a guy who was the 3rd assistant to Crean little over a year ago.  let him really earn it with years 2 and 3.

+1
Or to paraphrase the Big Tuna:  Let's see how Buzz does with his grocery shopping (recruiting his own players).  Only if he wins with them will he have proven himself and deserve a raise!

I am sure there are acclerators in his contract with certain benchmarks.  Hit the benchmarks, get the next bump, and it's laid out for the tem of the contrac - which I think is 6 years.

I think the idea is accurate and im sure like all big contracts, each year it is bumped up to another level. If we had gone to the final four, maybe they would have re-worked it but i cant imagine anything would happen so soon

Those were Keno Davis' recruits. Do you think Dr. Tom Davis was out recruiting? Give me a break. It will be a LONG, LONG time before somebody calls Buzz Williams for an opening.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, the only school in the country that would have even considered Buzz Williams as their head coach last year was Marquette. Given his work history and odd behavior whatever we're paying him is a gift.

I'm sure that humble Buzz is still happy with his contract as it stands.  If he exceeds expectations next year at this time we can maybe start the discussion before other schools come knocking.

He should get paid what he's worth. If in the next year or two he is able to keep MU in position to be near the Top of the Big East, he should be paid as such...that will likely mean a raise in dollars and years, and it will be deserved.

If he has MU sitting at the same table with UL, UConn, Pitt, and Villanova, he has every right to order from the same menu as Pitino, Calhoun, Dixon and Wright. Obviously longevity gives those guys a leg up from a contract perspective, but Buzz should be in the neighborhood if he realizes similar results as those guys, as well as his predecessor.
