Title: Incredible State ABout Tom Izzo
Post by: Norm on March 30, 2009, 12:17:14 AM
In discussing MSU's upset over Louisville, it was reported that every player who has played for 4 years under Tom Izzo has played in a Final Four. Wow - would love for that to be the case for a 14-year period at Marquette..

cannot the same be said of UNC (although under different coaches) and didn't coach K have a similar run?

I bleieve this is Izzo's fifth final 4. hell of a coach.

I just wish we had a coach like that.

Denny Crum had a similar run before the wheels fell off towards the end of his tenure at Louisville.

North Carolina has a break with Matt Doherty's first recruiting class.  They didn't go in the three years under him, nor did they go in their final year under Williams.

I think Izzo's ability has been shown this year.  I thought they were DOA when they lost to UNC back in December.  I can't believe that team made the Final Four this year.  Great motivator...they always play tough and hard.

And his wife isn't bad looking either.

I never felt like Louisville was the best team in the BEAST, and Izzo does things in the tournament few coaches are capable of.  He does not have an overly talented team, but he's an amazing tournament coach.  It's impressive.

I think that even though MSU was a #2 seed Tom Izzo has done one of the better coaching jobs in recent memory with this team. Forget the seeds look at who they played to get where they are at...BY FAR the hardest trip to get to the final four. USC, Kansas, and Lville, I definetly picked USC and/or Kansas to beat them. They are not a deep team but who exactly do you hone in on there team??

I just looked up their stats and two things popped out.  Their rebounding stats are out of this world.  They are the 5th best offensive rebounding team in the country and the 7th best on the defensive end.  On average, they rebound 41% of their misses.

Izzo has done a good coaching job, but lets n ot forget that his roster is loaded with studs. Here are the RSCI rankings for the MSU roster:

FR Delvon Roe 6'8" PF #10
FR Korie Lucious 5'11 PG #87
FR Draymond Green 6'6" PF #95
SO Durrell Summers 6'5" WG #28
SO Kalin Lucas 6'0" PG #34
SO Chris Allen 6'3" WG #38
JR Raymar Morgan 6'7" WF #34
JR Tom Herzog 7'0" C #47
JR Isaiah Dahlman 6'6" WF #67
5th Marquise Gray 6'7" PF #28

MSU also has 2 other 5th-year seniors: Goran Suton, 6'10" C, and Idong Ibok, 6'11" C.

I'd say that is a pretty talented team.

I think what puts MSU in a class of their own (over UNC, over UCONN, over Duke)... is how well they do while still recruiting their state.  Look at their roster, everyone is from Michigan or Ohio for the most part minus a few players (Lucious from WI).... look at UNC's roster:

Frasor - IL
Lawson - MD
Graves - NC
Green - NY
Thompson - CA
Ellington - PA
Davis - VA
Zeller - IN
Hansborough - MO

One main player from NC, not one player from the same state.

Here is MSU's:

Lucas - MI
Morgan - OH
Allen - GA (only different player)
Walton - OH
Roe - OH
Suton - MI
Lucious - WI
Gray - MI

All very midwest players... minus Allen, says a lot about Izzo's coaching.

You're right about that.  Izzo doesn't need to venture out much to be successful, which may be why he doesn't seem to consider taking other jobs.

As for Allen, he may not have lived in Michigan, but his family is originally from there, and his aunt and uncle were Magic Johnson's neighbors in Lansing.  So he's got Midwest roots.
