I don't post here often, but I read it on a regular basis. I would like to thank all of you for your insights on MU basketball. This is the best site to find anything Marquette.
I'm posting today, because I can't take the local media in Milwaukee and I would like to know if I'm the only one or if others are fed up with it too.
Ive been listening to 1250 WSSP in Milwaukee for about 3 years now. I listen all day at work, and mostly tune in to hear the Jim Rome show and local sports news. The last two days have drove me nuts. First of all they don't get any of their facts straight. They mispronounce DJ, Jerel and Mo's name on a regular basis, they call Buzz "classless" all while pretending they aren't Badger homers. It is kind of like when you are a kid and you call your sister names, its ok if you call her names, but you aren't going to tolerate someone else saying it. I don't want to hear Badger homers criticize MU in any way. One of the stations more brilliant hosts, admitted the other day that he watched bowling and Nascar on sunday and didn't watch the NCAA tournament, yet his listeners are supposed to take his opinions seriously and he is supposed to have credibility? Another host who actually defends MU on occasion, is a former Badger and Packer, he is an African American, male version, of Miss South Carolina, again, no credibility. The other host is a transplant from Michigan, who learned very quickly, that the best way to get the listening audience behind you is to rip MU every chance he gets and boost up UW no matter how minimal their accomplishments. I know the obvious answer is to just stop listening, but it is almost an addiction now, I can't wait to here what ignorant inflammatory thing they will say next. Ive known for a long time that the media outlets in this city have been ultra biased towards UW, but this station has crossed the line. I encourage any MU fan who listens to this station to stop tuning in, as I will try to take my own advice.
Thats my rant. Sorry if it wasn't worth reading, but I had to vent.
Haha... yeah the "Big Show" is AWFUL. Their morning show is pretty fair towards Marquette, and they added an MU grad as producer, who gave a nice recap of the incoming recruits the other day. It was nice to hear intelligent MU talk on their air.
Also, keep in mind they lost out on the broadcast rights to MU games a couple years ago, and carry UW games when not on TMJ. Gotta think that has influenced them.

I was listening to that rant on Monday. I sent an e-mail to Vernier voicing my displeasure with his out of line comments. He wrote back and basically defended his position.
I told him this senior class won 43 league games in their 4 years. The most by any team was 48. That's a hell of an accomplishment. Yet, according to his logic, November through March doesn't matter...only what a team does in the tournament. That's absurd.
I posed the question to him that if that's the case, would their tenure be viewed as more successful if they were .500 in the league every year, but made one or two Sweet 16's??? Again, absurd.
Then, he whines on the air and makes a crying sound and says the MU "honks" are going to chime in and make excuses. Well....against Michigan State, no McNeal. Against Mizzou, no James (for all intents and purposes). He says it's unacceptable not to make a Sweet 16 any of the 4 years with 3 future NBA players...but yet ignores the fact that in 2 of the 4 loses they didn't play!
I wanted to throw my radio out the F'ing window. Isn't the whole idea of local sports radio to support the local teams?
Okay, I'm sorry, but I have to ask, you listen to Jim Rome? Why? I live in Chicago, so don't hear those local guys, but if they're as bad as you say, you must get over this addiction - why not give them up for the rest of Lent?

I caught some of The Lame Show yesterday. Missed Monday. But got the jist of what they must've been talking about on Monday.
First of all, that show blows. I throw it on occassionally to sooth my a.m. sports fix on my way home and I can't stand Homer, who's the worst sports host in Milwaukee (ill-prepared, not funny, lame). The best thing about WSSP is when LeRoy Butler is on. He's actually awesome...but I digress.
While I very much disagree with their take on MU, we all can't act like a bunch of Sparty's. By that, I mean a bunch of MSU fans that always whine and cry about the attention the state of Michigan pays to U of M. They are the red-headed-step-child of the state of MI. Much in the same way, there are times when we MU fans are the same in Wisconsin (to UW-Madison).
All of that being said, it's A.M. radio. The Big Show follows the typical formula. Have one former "pro" on the show that rarely makes sense and can't even speak; have another person on that seems intelligent and can seem fair most of the time, and then have one jag-off to play devils advocate to everything and make outlandish points all in the hopes of attracting listeners. It's the same way Limbaugh or Maddow haters will still listen to their shows just because they hate them.
Re: MU, the thing that infuriates me about their ripping on the program is that they are being insanely unfair. I can understand their kneejerk reaction yelling how MU fans are "babies" or "whiners"....but if they would step back for two minutes and look at the bad luck that really HAS befell the program come tourney time, I think they'd come off better.
Fans aren't saying MU lost cuz of a bad call or whatever. Fans are upset because they see three deuschbags basically calling Wes, Jerel and Dom losers for not "doing anything" in the NCAA tourney and calling them overrated. And on top of that, they show no reasoning whatsoever whenever you bring up the bad luck/injuries that befell the program.
You know, when that station came out I used to get mad that they never talked about MU, and it was always about the Badgers.
Now, they do talk about MU, and I wish it would just go back to the Badger talk.
Nobody on that station has enough knowledge about the program to really formulate an insightful opinion.
Realistically, they should get a "MU insider" (maybe Rosiak?) and have him on for 15 minutes per week. It would be much better coverage than what they have now.
Having Sparky (or Doug Russell) try to talk about MU is silly. It's obvious they don't really know much about the program. I don't expect every sportscaster to be an expert on every team, but they should at least have a good enough grasp to speak intelligently and *gasp* maybe even positively about a program? Right now it looks like they are just waiting for things to bitch about.
I try to avoid WSSP as much as possible. The guys there are truly bad. But, I also think Jim Rome's radio show is pretty lame too. His TV show is ok, but Rome's radio show is really poor. Guy loves to listen to himself talk and say the same thing over and over and over.
I've seen Doug Russell sitting at the press table behind the hoop at most of the MU home games this year, so I know he somewhat pays attention. But, I can't stand to listen to that negative pr!ck talk about anything, much less MU.

Hmm... I didn't know that.
Then he must be seeing something I don't, because he sounds stupid on the air when he talks about MU.
I know he LOVES the Badgers, and could take or leave MU, but still, he should be able to accurately asses what he is seeing.

Alright, I guess I'll just say I don't like his show or his takes on MU hoops.
I don't know him personally or his biases, I've just heard him say on the air that he was a fan of the state school and not really into the local private school (this was when he first took the job).
I don't think he hates MU, but I assumed he was indifferent. Maybe that has changed.

I listened to that station for about 3 weeks, I would guess ~3 years ago. They had a guy on in the afternoons that had been national radio, but apparently it was the only job he could find. Thankfully, I cannot remember his name.
He was so obnoxious, he would make Mark Belling uneasy. Plus, he was often inaccurate. I changed that button on my car radio to 1510AM (ESPN at the time) even though I could only get the signal a few hours a day.
Now that they are at 540AM, I don't know why anyone would listen to another Sports Station in MKE. To be honest, I was 100% sure 1250 was still on the air.

That would be him. I still won't consider listening to that station again until you can post an article that "Sparky" Pfiefer has been let go too. He was a former producer for Homer's show on WISN. I thought he was OK until I could hear his voice (and opinions) over the air.
I will never forget when he filled in for Homer during the week leading up to MU's Final Four appearance, he was talking about Brewers baseball. I had tuned in thinking it would be all MU talk, given that, you know, it was the Freaking Final Four!! To this day that is the only thing that angered me so much that I wrote an email to the radio station. Homer, being a company man, actually stuck up for him.
Well, glad to see Im not the only one. I actually like Jim Rome, I never really liked it until I was forced to listen to it for about a week straight at work. Ever since then Ive been hooked. He just grows on you, and once you get what he is talking about and understand the sound bites it is absolutely hilarious. As for 540, the only show I can tolerate is the D-List, even though I dont like Drew Olsen,(Needles and the Anchorman stuff is hilarious!) and the Game. The ESPN national guys are terrible and Homer is.....well......Homer. Well, thanks for the input guys, glad im not alone on this, and I look forward to reading your posts in the future, thanks again.
