Title: Buzz radio show tonight - some great stuff
Post by: Big Papi on March 23, 2009, 07:08:28 PM
THis was the last show of the year but if you are a diehard MU fan, I highly suggest you add the ESPN 540 link and then listen to his radio show next year.

Some tidbits:

Has a meeting with Liam and doctors on his condition tomorrow.

Leaving Wednesday for some heavy recruiting Wednesday and Thursday.

Reiterated that he needs to sign great players.  Implied he won't settle for players due to need.

Will never pass up on a great player

Will see all 5 commits next week.  Will spend an hour or so with the player, an hour or so with their coach and an hour or so with their families.

Buycks - He believes he is THE BEST JUCO GUARD in the country.

Junior - More Fields and DJ, knows how to run a team

Roseboro - Excellent skill set.  Unforunately played for one of the worst teams in the country, not to talk badly about his team and teammates.

Erik Williams - Great offensive player.  Length, athleticism, long, bouncy.  Needs to learn how to defend.  Long way to go there but will be very good.

Maymon - Really excited about him.  His body is Big East ready.

Dwight Burke - Anyone wonder how a 6'6" Burke with no leaping ability whatsoever was able to win so many opening tips?   Used his right shoulder to bump the other jumper going up and tipped the ball with his left hand.   Thats a great tip from a suppossed inexperienced coach.   ;)

hopefully Buzz succeeds on his upcoming recruiting.  I would love to get 1-2 more skilled players for next year.

other site said Brent said the EW was 1st team all state in Texas - if so that is freaking awesome. Texas probably has the best talent pool in all of HS basketball in the nation - Houston in particular.

Yes he did say Erik Williams was first team all state.  What I missed was that they were talking about MVP and I didn't know if Erik Williams was MVP or not as Buzz was talking about his wife's athletic prowess so I missed out what he was actually talking about.

The other site also hinted that Junior could be very instrumental in the signing of a 'big' that he has a great relationship with from AAU ball.  Could this mean Latavious Williams????  I have no insider info, just trying to read between the lines.

That's true, I need to get better at reading between the lines and reading the lines themselves.  What was really said was Cadougan has a great relationship with a big, a star from an all star camp.  Any guesses?   ?-(

For football maybe, but not sure about basketball.  List of the top 100 players has 12 from California, though Texas doing very well with 8.

Dunno if we really need Latavious.  He's another combo forward, of which we already have several on the roster.  I think we need another 2 guard a lot more at this point, but if two scholarships were to open, I certainly wouldn't be opposed to it either.

True, however Brent also "Reiterated that he needs to sign great players.  Implied he won't settle for players due to need.  Will never pass up on a great player"

But that is where his comment of we will never pass on a great player and won't settle for a player due to a need.  I think Latavious is viewed as a great a player and argueably he would be viewed as the best big man commit that MU has had since maybe Jimmy Mac.

I have seen people say he could play center for us next year?

A lot of this could have to be with the uncertainty of liam mcmorrow health and future.  Anyone have any updates on him.

I think he is more of a combo forward probably a 4 who could be a 3.  He is 6'8" about 195-200lbs and extremely athletic.  I guess he could be a 5 under the right circumstances.

You can never have too many guys named Williams.

Probably get a bulk discount on Jerseys that way too  ;)

Or length.

McMorrow 7'0"
Otule 6'10"
Clark 6'10"
E. Williams 6'7"
Maymon 6'7"

Add L. Williams and his 6'8" athletic frame to the above list and other teams will have nightmares.

He had his last radio show for the season tonight but you might be able to catch the recording via their podcast whenever they add it.  Maybe within a day or so?

Buzz is meeting with the docs etc tomorrow about Liam, and Buzz said it was a basketball thing

It's a little disconcerting to me that Buzz is meeting with Liam and the docs; certainly wouldn't do that if it was simply the flu or something like that. Sure hope he's ok for his sake first and foremost. He's an intriguing prospect with his athleticism and size, and I have been looking forward to seeing him on the hardwood.

I have been posting it all along, but would like to vociferously state my opinion one more time.  Buzz Williams has done a terrific job, has shown he's more fastidious than most, and can recruit big league talent.  He is the entire package, and over time will prove his exponential value to both the university and the basketball program.  He carries himself with confidence and has often showcased a self-effacing nature.  He appreciates his job, the opportunity to coach elite college athletes, and his family.  What more could you want?  I am really excited for next year and the seasons to come.

I am pretty sure he means Dwight Powell, 4 star, 2010 PF recruit. He played on Junior's AAU team, Grassroots Canada.

He has repeated this a couple times now, but what does it actually translate to? How good is he?

A little more on Powell:

And a blurb in this USA Today story about how Buzz and Benford are tight with the  AAU coach for both Cadougan and Powell.

obviously it is only ones sites opinion but ESPN rates buycks the highest of our 5 recruits.   They rate him as a 94,  Maymon is a 92 and rated #50ish and Junior is a 92 and rated 71?  A 94 would put Buycks in the 30's ranking wise. his ability and maturity hopefully make him ready made for next year.

I fully expect Buycks to have an impact similar to what McNeal had during his soph/early junior year before he took it to that next level.  A very good all around guard who will fill up a stat sheet.  Hit the outside shot at a 35% clip.  Get some assists, rebounds and steals.  Now McNeal did takeit to a whole another level late his junior year and this year but I am not comparing Buycks to this year's McNeal version.

This team will not fall off a cliff next year.  We will have a lot of growing pains where we win some huge games and lose some games we shouldn't lose.  This team will finish in the middle of the pack which would not be that bad of a season considering our losses.  Our biggest question marks next year will be point guard play and defense.
