Title: Other 6 -11 Matchups
Post by: NotAnAlum on March 15, 2009, 10:52:43 PM
I was happy with our 6th seed but not so happy playing a Utah St team practically on their home court (in a WAC town 4 hours drive from their campus).  I guess if given the choice I would have taken the Dayton match up.  If we get to the second round I'd perfer Mizzou over Kansas or for that matter Nova or Syr (even though we wouldn't have been seeded across from them anyway)  I think we were the "last" 6 and probably drew the best 11.

Well we couldn't be placed against Dayton either... since we played them and got crushed by them.

Interesting that you would RATHER play a team we have already lost to (with DJ), then a team in Utah St whos best win is.... actually, can't find any.

There is their schedule... try and find one.. its tough, no NCAA teams in there they have beaten.

I agree with your argument about Dayton.  But Utah St.  did beat #5 seed Utah this year.  It was a home game for them, but a good win nonetheless.

If you assume that UL/Pitt/UNC/UConn were 1-4 on the S-Curve, my basic analysis would indicate that MU was actually CLOSER to a 5 than they were a 6, since they came in as #21 on my basic S-Curve breakdown on of the field (would have been the first 6).  As the top 6 (#21), we would have gotten the lowest 11 (#44).

If you dig a little deeper, though, all the potential round 1/round 2 matchups we could have had based on the S-Curve could have driven the committee to swapping us out with one of the other 6 seeds for procedural reasons:

Midwest:  West Virginia (6):  Dayton (11)-would have been a regular season rematch in round 1.

East:   UCLA (6):  Villanova (3)-would have been rematch of regular season/BET in round 2.

South:  Arizona State (6):  Syracuse (3)-would have been regular season rematch in round 2.

My guess, though, was that we got swapped with WVU.  So we were probably indeed the last 6, since WVU's spot on the S-Curve is #24.

I think our Dayton loss was a classic situation where one team (Dayton) felt it was one of the most important games on their schedule for the year while another team (MU) having just beaten NI by 30 figured they didn't even have to play that hard to win.  Playing Dayton again we get to play the role of "the hunter"; rare for a lower seed.  Oh well it didn't happen so its off to Boise.

Quite possibly the worst 5 seed of all time.
