Title: Possible Recruits
Post by: ItsCotter on January 23, 2007, 04:38:26 PM
I'm sure many of you posters are readers of the Journal Sentinel and probably read a little bit about the preps basketball.
In today's issue, they mentioned a player down in Racine by the name of Jamil Wilson that's getting serious consideration by Marquette. He's a 6'6" sophomore guard/forward.
So the question is ... do any of you ever check out high school games that might have certain/future Marquette recruits?

Since Northern CA isn't really a hoops hotbed, I do catch the rare high D-1 prospects.

I'm checking out Drew Gordon and his Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) team next month. He's being targeted by the Pac-10 as well as Duke and other heavies. One of his teammates is 6'5", 180 G/F Colin Chieverton. I guess he listed MU as one of his interested schools.  Here's Scout's profile of him (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=415&p=8&c=1&nid=2899958).

I witnessed:
- DeMarcus Nelson in HS before he left for Duke...man, he was manchild - stocky and super athletic.
- Pre-Oak Hill Luke Whitehead beat my alma mater then lose to us in the sectionals. (YEAH!)
- others who are D-1 but not that notable (Worthy for LMU, Obazuaye for Colorado).

If you want good WI h.s. hoops coverage, http://www.wissports.net/wishoops/ (http://www.wissports.net/wishoops/) is the only place to look, featuring Mark Miller's excellent reporting.   :)

Hoops junkie here, might as well admit it.

Earlier this year I caught Damian Saunders in action, http://marquettebasketball.blogspot.com/2007/01/recruit-report-damian-saunders-in.html

Hoping to see Hazel soon

I watched Keaton Nankavil(?) last night against Janesville Craig and was duly impressed..., I sat behind he and his parents at MU/Pitt game last year during his visit.  At that time I thought we still had a chance, altho his mother intimated to my wife that UW was his first choice.  He looks to play as a true center (back to basket, hooks, blocks, plenty rebs, etc) and we sure could use same.

Nankavil probably would not be happy in our offense.

I doubt he'll be much happier in the swing

Don't bet on it! In a year he'll be proficient at posting up and taking outside shots, which pretty much sums up the swing.  I'm sure he knew all about it before he committed and has no problem with it at all.

I believe Madison Memorial plays the swing...?  Should not be a problem, although he looks to be a classic post-up. Certainly he does not have an outside shot like Wilkerson.  So, it will be interesting to see how things work out.

I've never been to a Bo Ryan practice but watching his teams play I'm sure he spends countless hours teaching shooting technique and post up moves.  Practice makes perfect and most of his players develop pretty nice games in both respects.  They all don't become Steve Novak (who does?) but most develop a pretty adequate outside presence.  Most also usually develop shots without a lot of technical flaws.
