Title: Jerel Throwing Up Bricks
Post by: MUWarrior06 on March 07, 2009, 03:19:10 PM
3PTM-3PTA:
at louisville 2-10
at pitt4-12
syracuse 4-14

Everyone gets on DJ's case for going 1-9 versus South Florida... McNeal throws up 3 awful games and you barely hear a peep... except for against PITT when a few commented on his 5 feet behind the 3 point line shots.

This guy needs to realize when he's off and get others involved. Seems like he thinks he's the only one who can score out there.  Stop taking lessons from Allen Iverson and pass the damn ball. He's taken more 3s in the last 3 games than the previous 6. Yeah, DJ hurt puts more pressure on him, but he's got 4 other teammates. They may not be the type of player DJ is/was, but they can put the ball in the hoop. You don't keep throwing up bricks and taking bad shots when you aren't hitting anything

At least drive to the basket and create shots for others. This is getting ridiculous. You won't be able to shoot 29% from 3pt range in the BE tourney or NCAA tourney and expect to win.

I understand that he put them into overtime and that he's come up big all season long, but that's no excuse for continuing to throw up brick after brick. Find another way to score because what you're trying 34 times in the last 3 games has not been working very well

If you want to complain about three point shooting today you can't start or stop with McNeal...nor can you compare DJ's three point shooting to Jerel's.

The problem is he makes one occasionally and every one talks about how great he is.  Why didn't he drive to the hoop at the end of regulation?  This team is too streaking to win on the perimeter and they have no inside presence.  Burke sat the bench on Sr. Day for OT.  Wes jumping center?  This team will play 2 more games this year.

Amen to everything you said.

Jerel 4 for 14 from three land.  Team was 7 for 30.  So, he basically took half of team's threes today.

I'm not complaining about 3 point shooting today. I'm complaining about McNeal's shot selection in the last 3 games.

Nor did I compare DJ's three point shooting to Jerel's. All I said is that Jerel has thrown up bricks. When DJ throws up bricks everyone gets on his case. Why the double standard? He may be feeling the pressure of DJ being out, but that doesn't mean he needs to take DJ's share of the 3s (if your kid is off to college do you eat two servings at dinner instead of one?). Drive to the hoop. This guy has been a one-trick-pony the last 3 games and it hasn't worked. 29% from 3pt range won't cut it.

Although if you want to compare DJ's 3 point shooting to Jerel's...

DJ's 3 point shooting all season long: 28%
McNeal's 3 point shooting the last 3 games: 29%... Yet no one has said a WORD about Jerel sucking it up behind the arc

Unfortunately, you are almost certainly correct.

I think DJ's two greatest assets were his defense and his keeping Jerel under control by running the offense. We miss both equally.

i'll agree that mcneal's shot selection has sucked since dj's exit. and it looked like he had no legs today. the only 3s i saw him make where ones he steped into.

Defensively we're awful without DJ. Syracuse shot nearly 70% on two-point attempts today (29 of 43).

So our lack of defense means Jerel has to shoot 14 3s?

I don't buy it.

Yes DJ's injury hurts us the most on defense, and teams are shooting lights out against us as a result, but that's an excuse. No excuses for why Jerel needs to keep shooting 3s like that. We were in the game with all his misses. Imagine what the score would be like if he realized his shot was broke and he started driving/passing?

Jerel is a real talent, but he never learned to play under control from his first home game to his last. Once DJ went down it appeared that Jerel figured he had to be DWade.

I can agree with that

He is also probably falling in his draft status after the last four games.

Yup. For those of you concerned about that (Jerel is at least apparently). I have to wonder if this surge of bad shots has to do with him more concerned about his own stats, proving it to the NBA that he can take a team on his shoulders... or at least trying to. Fail

8-24, 9-24...I guess there aren't enough weapons, and James really did put a leash on his out of control possession-kills with turnovers and bricks.  Sure McNeal's gotten 23-25 points and some assists, but he's killed 20 possessions without the team scoring as well (possession kills would be an interesting stat to track-i.e. who turned the ball over or missed a shot that the other team rebounded).
