Title: Favorite Burger place
Post by: Ari Gold on March 03, 2009, 01:09:47 PM
I just got back from a little day trip to madison and I was able to experience Five Guys. It wasn't the first time i've been there, I went to the one in DC a year or so ago, but this 5 Guys was really incredible. Bacon Cheese burger with the works was quite a consumption. HOWEVER I think Sobels is better, 5 guys a close second, sollys a distant third (smaller burgers, bad service).  I want to know what the scoopers think. Is it sobes hands down or...?

If you put other make a justification

...man a double sobe with a few beers would be so great right now.... :D

Other: In n Out just ahead of Sobelman's. The rest are pedestrian at best. In fact Culver's flat out sucks.

It's on a different level than Sobelman's but Kopps has a great burger too.  Kopps is more of a fast food burger.

I live out in DC now, and each 5 guys is a little differnet.  the one by my place though has the best greasy cheeseburger around.  sometimes the cheese at sobelman's isn't completely melted through to my liking.  and i'm a raw onion kinda guy.  so i guess the fact that i can pick any condiments from a list of about 15 at five guys is a difference maker to me.

Sobelman's, hands down.

Another GREAT one is Cheeseburger in Paradise, found in various locations around the United States.

the service and atmosphere at sobelman's are as good as their burgers. it has character without being a dump, and i've never left the place regretting that i came when i could've gone anywhere in milwaukee. it's consistently solid.

culver's and 5 Guys make great burgers, but they're still fast-food restaurants, and this poll is about favorite burger PLACE. besides, In N' Out kills those two if we're comparing burger chains.

solly's is gimmicky. sorry.

Sobelman's is unbeatable.

Five Guys makes a damn good burger, as does Kopp's (as mentioned earlier in the thread).

Can't go wrong with any of 'em.

that's easy....Krystal Burger on West End Avenue in Nashville.

Doubt that it is still there, but, if you like miniature burgers with lots of onions and ketchup and enjoy throwing 5 or 6 down at a sitting, this is definitely the place.

I think if I had to pick, it's Sobelman's.

As a DCer, Five Guys is great, but the awards for best burgers in the DC area has been going to Ray's Hell Burger lately.  It's a small little place in Arlington.  If you didn't know it was there, you'd never find it.  Just a plain, all-white place with a screen door in a strip mall.  Great burgers though.  The guy butchers his own meat for both the burger joint and also he's steak joint down the street - Ray's The Steaks.

I work on West End, and there is no longer a Krystal on West End, but there is one about 2 blocks off West End on Charlotte. There is a White Castle/ Church's Chicken, but no Krystal.

And my vote goes to Ludy's, a small bar in Kickapoo, IL. (About 15 min outside of Peoria.)  I understand this is not a chain or available in Milwaukee, but that wasn't listed as necessary criteria.  Oh, and they have $1.25 bud light / miller light drafts at all times.

Anyone that makes it out to San Diego needs to stop by Corvette Diner...it's the best burger I've ever had...in fact, I'm looking forward to eating another "heart attack" when I fly out there tomorrow.

apologies to not including Kopps, but admittedly for me it ends up 3rd. The only highlight can be the fact that you can get a shake/malt with the burger and those two are a good fit. -not as good as beer and sobes-

Solly's was good. I got bad service there like 2-3 times so I probably won't go back unless I make it up that direction... which I wont. and If I did, I'd go to kopps for virtually the same thing and 1/2 the price

unfortunately, "Solly's was good" is too true.  Before the forced move to accommodate the freeway ramp, there was nothing finer.  In fact, I always ordered two on 'pillows' right away to avoid waiting for the second one halfway through my malt...  Man, when I think of how many arteries I donated there, it's scary!  Now, I agree w/ Sobelmann's.  In and Out is a great second, but mostly because of the freshness and malts.

try and hit up the southside of milwaukee (bay view). Check out cafe lulu (i know sounds gay); but they have a burger called the heart attack. 1/2 pound burger topped with bacon and gorgonzola cheese....WOW!!

Sobelmans is #1 but cafe lulu is a close second.

We were excited to try 5 Guys when they opened one 10 minutes from our house.  We all like burgers and we thought, they must be good if that is all they do.

Except for the fact that it wasn't burned around the edges, it tasted just like when I grill them at home...with beef from Pick n Save...on Roundy's buns from Pick n Save.  And I am not a great bbq'r.  Needless to say, extremely disappointed.  Haven't been back since, even though they opened another one about 15 minutes away in the opposite direction.

A friend of mine introduced me to Sobleman's last year.  I was so hungry I am not sure I tasted more than 1/2 the burger, but it was outstanding.  Plus we were dining near a celebrity!!!  Kathy Mycleby from WISN News ;)

As for burger places, out here in Boston, great place cllaed RF O'Sullivans is the spot.  I also tried So Good in DC, opened up by Spike from last season's Top Chef.  Solid solid place.

In Milwaukee, Sobleman's, hands down.

Sobelman's 100%

but there is a place called the "Ardor" on Milwaukee street (if it is still there.)  It was a smoke free bar (+1 for taste for me) and the burger was huge, cooked perfectly, and delicious... their fries were great as well.

I would highly recommend it.

as for 5G, the one in Madison is meh at best.  As for Cheese Burger in Paradise?  screw that, they are worse than Red Robin, and $9.  NO THANK YOU.

I was wondering the same thing, it looks like they closed up shop this summer. A real shame, it was good food and very reasonably priced. Yet another non-chain place closed in Milwaukee.

McDonald's.

Kidding.

I've only been to Kopps, so I'm wondering: are the other great-tasting burgers people have mentioned fairly priced? Where do you get the most bang for your buck? Sometimes I have a good meal and although it may be delicious, it's not as delicious as the price would lead you to believe.

A dub at sobes is $9. go on a thursday and get $1.50 PBRs and be under $15. Given that they serve beer and their apps are the best, it's likely to be the best deal overall as well.

at 5 guys I get a bacon cheese burger with extras so that is like 6? I made the mistake of getting large fries so I spend like $10+ and tossed most of the fries (I don't care that much for 5 guy fries)

At Kopps I seem to always spend around $12+ for a burger fries rings and a non fountain drink, but there is almost too much grease. same goes for Culvers, but they have cheese curds

I think Solly's pushes the $15 for fries and non fountain. Since the service sucks more than warrior07 (just kidding I love you man) it just doesnt seem worth it for me.

My Fave Five Burgers:

1)  Sobelman's (enough different types of burgers on the menu to vary things up when I go there beyond the classic Sobelman's)
2)  Five Guys (the original location in Arlington, VA; haven't been to one of the franchised spots yet)
3)  Billy Goat Tavern, Chicago (great, great experience)
4)  Solly's (liked it, but just a little too much butter on mine when I went)
5)  In-And-Out (loved the simplicity of it all)

Honorable mention:  White Castle (although you're playing with fire if you order a 30 banger from there with friends)

Nice to see sliders getting some love.  Worked on the White Castle advertising account for several years... it's more of a cultural experience than a meal, no?  Was conducting some market research once and the customer described it as a "soft, gooey, foodlike substance."

no light beers really have any taste. put it this way, one bottle of Bells Hopslam has as much hops as 7 cases of Miller Lite. There just isn't much body or flavor there. Listen, I drink Miller Lite because you can consume mass quantities of it. If I could find the clip from PCU of Jeremy Pivon's talking about chugging Meister Brau I would. But to say Lite is a "good" beer and not just something that is for mass consumption is a falsehood. Emancipate your pallet and try some good old American Micro Beer.

Beer snob much? Chili you'd pay for an $8 beer at a dive bar just to say you can right? Crack open a Natty or PBR take off the skirt and relax!

Jeremy Piven is the reason I do shots of Cuervo to live No-no-no-notoriously... it's also my name  8-)

If you would have read what I wrote I do drink High Life. And I do like PBR as well. You can throw Schlitz in there too. But, yes, I am a beer snob. I like good beer. I also a food snob. It doesn't mean it has to be expensive, but it should taste good. Taste is the key thing here. Light beer just has no flavor. It is so watered down and made so you can consume a lot of it. Which has it is place, like I mentioned above.

And having a 10% Hopslam sure beats the piss out of a 4.2% Lite.

I'm just kidding around with ya Chili. Since it's become Shandy season it'll be the only thing I drink for a few weeks. I switched to Strongbow because leinies quit on Apple spice. nothing beats the coors light/pbr sobel special. Dogfish Ale is good too. I'll drink just about any beer and do try and match beer to food when it's good food or good beer, but when I'm out with my friends at the bar by 1 or 2 am I don't care what I am drinking so I cheap out and drink me some miller lite. Also there is nothing like grabbing a case or two of Natty and sitting in your garage/in the back yard with your buds and drinking til the sun rises.

I'm with Chili on this one.  And as the commercial says, "life's too short to drink cheap beer."

Give me a Bell's Porter or a good Belgian Wheat like Wittekerke anyday....

To continue this thread derailment away from Burgers...
I recently had the New Belium Organic Wit, and it was quite tasty.

no light beers really have any taste. put it this way, one bottle of Bells Hopslam has as much hops as 7 cases of Miller Lite. Emancipate your pallet and try some good old American Micro Beer.

and hence my original comment

i'm just saying, don't underestimate water! It can also be fatal in mass quantities  :o

Why did Leinie quit on Apple Spice? i don't think fireside nut brown can compare (although I don't dislike it).  now i have to make my own darn apple beer! (which I don't, but would consider just mixing cider with ?something)  I ended up buying a "cider" beer last autumn, it just wasn't the same.

Also, nothing is wrong with PBR/Schlitz/Lite drinks, but sometimes I go for "quality"/specialty over quantity, yes.

One ought to admit that Sprecher or Lakefront tour >> Miller for the beer aspect

Don't get me wrong here, fellas. I enjoy a "good/fancy/expensive" beer as much as the rest of you, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with Miller Lite. Like I said, four-time World Beer Cup Gold. Must be doing something right....

As for the 10% vs 4.2% alcohol content, if that's all you're after, why not skip the beer altogether and go for something in the 100proof range?

A) fireside nut sucks
b) I don't know exactly why. I think it was just a limited time beer
c) you can always switch to strongbow or Woodchuck Ale's Granny Smith. They taste similiar, but admittedly I've forgotten what Apple Spice tastes like

Screw hard cider - that stuff is too sweet for me. If you want a good seasonal go with Furthermore's Fallen Apple. They are from Spring Green, WI.

word.

but fireside nut brown isn't all bad, c'mon.  it's the cinnamon toast crunch of beer. maybe.

and, touché about the local water.  but I work in a hospital man! as long as it's been purified or unless it's from india/mexico or has vibrio cholera, crypto or c. diff . . .  it's fair game to drink :)  it's not like i grew up on Fiji water or anything!

PS  You'd be surprised, but some of the best tap drinking water IS in Milwaukee . . . well, s/p 1994 crypto outbreak of course  ;D

Sobelmann's is quite possibly the most over-rated burger place in America.  I would bet Tulsa Warrior's intestines that their meat is frozen, not fresh.  Places that serve frozen beef start out in the hole with me.

And what people don't seem to grapse is you love their buns, not their burger.  Their buns are fantastic but I'm not going to choose a burger just b/c of their bun.  I appreciate a place that uses quality rolls but if you serve frozen beef, you're just cancelling yourself out.

Other thoughts:

Solly's...We all love the butter.  It's good but it's butter.
Kopp's...Very good but their patties are frozen too though they do enough with it to earn points

My fave...Hooligan's on North.  Wicked Hop in Third Ward pretty good too, though their fries (steak) suck.

Went to In N Out in Vegas two weeks ago, really like it, though I skipped the 1000 Island and I wonder I got the true experience.

Fireside Nut Brown is terrible, I gave away 4 of my 6 pack because it was way too sweet.

Also I have to disagree with Chili's infatuation with Furthermore... they are just 'alright'.  I taste tested everything they had at the "Thirsty troll" beer tasting event in Mt. Horeb.

I was at Krueger's in Menomonee Falls to watch the tourney games and probably had one of the best burgers I've ever had. They recently expanded and added a kitchen and the food is great...reasonably priced even if their drink's aren't.

Krueger's? Seriously? I haven't been in there since they taught bolwing in gym class at North Jr High. Why would yo go in there?

I recently went to Elsa's on the Park for the first time. Their burgers were good. A little high priced, but good enough. The place is a little too 'swanky' for where this board was intended to go, but none the less, if you are looking for fine-r dinning and a good burger... Elsa's is good.

The owners are good friends of mine. That's usually enough reason for me to go there.

I've never had a burger at Elsa's, but isn't it owned by the same family that owns Kopps?  Are the burgers the same / similar?

I wouldn't exactly consider Elsa's a "burger place" though.  If we're considering Elsa's, then I'd have to say that the Capital Grille has a buger that's out of this world.

"An "almost too big to wrap your hands around it" chopped sirloin burger blended
with onion, smoked bacon and Havarti cheese. A toasted onion roll completes the journey
from All-American Classic to all new sensation."

I love Sollys myself......

Not a fan of Kopps;  5B burgers are ok, don't care for the fries; also, north star bistro has good burgers too
