Just finished class at Emory Clark (the nursing building), saw DaShonte Riley and his mom leaving the Old Gym.
MU Basketball insiders, who would the prety brunette lady talking to Riley's mom and all that?
-
I hope Riley sees Buzz's system tonight and realizes how much of an impact that a good center could have.
Also, good day to have nice weather. As my friends and I look back at our college choices, many of us coincidentally chose the school that had the nicest weather when we visited. He knows it is cold in the Midwest coming from Michigan, but the warmer weather just means a happier time no matter what. Let's hope the trend continues.

Is that where you have to go to reschedule a visit?
-
Why are we showing incoming recruits the old gym? Why did we spend millions of dollars on the Al to waste recruits time by showing them that dump?

I believe that all recruits start there for all sports.

I'm sure that is his entire day, just looking at the old gym. I mean with the enormity of our campus there isn't possibly time for him to see both the old practice facility and the new.
Buzz and his staff are idiots and do not know how to conduct a campus visit.
-
Ya thats exactly what I said...
-
Can they walk past the BC and see all the students lining up for the game... if I was a player, I would be pumped to go to a school where students are lining up close to a day before the game starts.
-
I believe that all recruits start there for all sports.
That's probably true, but I figure they would have completely phased out the Old Gym by now and started to use the AL for stuff like that.
-
That dump produced a National Champion.
It's got great history all over it, while the building might look old, it's a treasure to walk through to look at all the old plaques, awards and memorabilia.
Edit:
I'm not sure how much of the old memorabilia made it into the AL. But I certainly was surprised to learn that MU played in the first Cotton Bowl while walking through it one day.
-
It is also the gym where D Wade practiced, who is likely the player current recruits most associate with our program.
It could be used as a means of talking about how the program has changed and how far it has come.
-
Lets not be stupid...of course he is gonna see the AL! Maybe its like here is where we used to practice and this is where we practice now, geez. I think Buzz knows what he is doing.
-
It's exciting to hear that DaShonte Riley is visiting campus and will see MU beat UCONN! He will be a great addition to the team!!!
-
Maybe all of the reschedules will be a blessing.......HUGE GAME!.......The Bradley Center is going to be INSANE!!!!!!!!
-
off topic a bit...
i got the awesome opportunity to play an intramural bball championship in the old gym. it really felt pretty special and i felt extremely lucky to have that chance - to play on a court so many other greats had been on before me.
-
Perhaps the student section can get a "We want DeShonte" chant going during a timeout.

i dont want to sound big time or anything :), but...I played bball at the old gym ALOT during my time at MU. It was great.
-
Perhaps the student section can get a "We want DeShante" chant going during a timeout.
Unfortunately, a significant part of the student section have no idea who Dashonte Riley is.
-
ya, i play there whenever i can, current student. its a great place

That's Buzz's Recruiting Coordinator, I think her name is Emily. I met her at MU Madness when she was carrying around Buzz's glass of sweet tea. She was very nice.

Yeah, that wouldn't be a bad face to see the first time I came to campus.
-
How's the temp down on Campus now? Is it near 50 degrees? Man, it'd be nice to have a semi-warm day for DaShonte to see that it's not all snow and cold in Milwaukee - edit: Even though he is from Detroit
Let's hope that he gets out of town before the snow hits us...

If, as reported, it's down to to Marquette and Syracuse and weather is an issue for the kid, I like our chances.
Avg. yearly snowfall:
Milwaukee - 47 inches
Syracuse - 115.6 inches (#1 in the nation)
-
Unfortunately, a significant part of the student section have no idea who Dashonte Riley is.
This is probably for the best.

This shameless cutting of class is disgusting. Back in the day we were expected to be in class and were held accountable. Fr Raynor must be spinning in his grave at this disturbing erosion of discipline.

Back in the day we had reserved seats.
-
The Al is a unbelievable facility, but a lot of work has been done to the Old Gym since the Al was built. A lot of athletes still workout and train at the Old Gym...the golf facility they have down there now is pretty sweet.
-
We had reserved seats, and with the exception of UNC in 86, never had a top team come to our gym. (84-88) And we would have been terrified when they did, especially in 87 and 88.

Yeah, that wouldn't be a bad face to see the first time I came to campus.
So that's what people do with a Journalism and Anthropology degree these days...
-
We had reserved seats back in the day, but we had to camp out for a week in October - missed a few classes that week, but the profs kind of expected it, plus we helped each other out with the homework we missed....
-
I am at the game in the student section right now and a "We Want Riley" chant is being planned.
-
He's with his mother, so "We want Riley, and Mom"
-
A good portion of the lower bowl LOUDLY chanted "We Want Riley" as he entered the stadium. It was perfect!

WTF. Nice Job Fellas, just don't tell me they were chanting at OOze.
-

There were a few times it was started but the last time, when the most students joined in, it definitely was him. I saw him earlier, around 3, at the Al as well. Smiled a bit as he walked by listening to it too.
-
The student section was pretty loud in shouting his name as he walked by....he walked by our section which is right behind the visitor's bench and we (the adults) were all yelling at him, telling him to please come to Marquette and how we all want him.......If I were a recruit I would have been extremely impressed with the game and everything associated with it.
-
If I'm Riley, I'm looking at tonight's game thinking:
"If they had someone that could block or alter shots and grab some rebounds, Marquette would have won this game. They need someone just like me."
-
MUTV interviewed Riley at halftime - hopefully that video will be posted soon.
-

...um... what? Seriously? I'm praying you meant to use teal.
Are you going to call all the students "hooligans" and "whippersnappers" now?
-
It was pretty cool to see DaShonte and his moms faces' when we were chanting. He walked out of the tunnel and seemed a little shocked and then cracked a smile. Great job by the students for starting that chant.
-
I wont be disappointed when he commits to Syracuse.

Brilliant post. Some things are better to keep to yourself. There are plenty of people here that would love to have Riley commit to MU!

Poorly worded I guess, my bad...but what excites you about him?
This class needs another guard. I will be excited about a Riley commitment, if it is accompanied by a commitment from another guard.

I did get an interview with DaShonte at halftime. I just finished up my day's classes, and I'm heading over to cut up the interview and post it soon.

You're kidding, right? It couldn't be more obvious from last night's game, this team needs tall timber in the worst way to impact the BE. I'd gladly welcome Riley over any others still on the board.

This team is going to need another guard, more than a "tall timber" that has his share of red flags...
Size wont be an issue next year, or the follwing years. Guard depth will be.
I will trust Buzz and his staff, but I would much rather see a guard like Darius Smith than Riley.
-
I don't see the guard problem next year:
PG - Mo, Cubes, Junior
SG - Buycks, Williams
I think adding more guys who are 6'11" with high ceilings is a smart way to go.

Let me fix that for you:
PG - Mo, Junior
SG - Buycks, Cubillian
You would be confident going forward with that?
-
Guys--- YES we need bigs but, based on those who have signed, we need a guard in the worse way. The college game is a GUARD game. If anything has been proved this year, its that CUBES is not in the mix. He never was a point guard and now that he has lost his shot, has no position.
WE NEED A GUARD
-
Based on the scheme Buzz seems to prefer, I think a guy like Williams can play the 2. At 6'6" it would be an obvious change for MU, but certainly not out of the question.
Buzz has talked about having interchangeable parts between the 2,3,4 positions, and while I recognize that is easier said than done, I do believe (from what I've read) that a guy like Williams could play the 2.
I think next year also represents a major rebuilding year. Looking ahead a little further, I would agree that we need to add another guard to the 2010 class, but with this over-recruit I have no problem with a skilled big.
-
Hey Brad. Where's the video???
-
Jimmy can also play at the 2 next year. W/ Buycks able to play point as well, as he has in JUCO this year, we will still have depth at the guard positions.
-
Let me fix that for you:
PG - Mo, Junior
SG - Buycks, Cubillian
You would be confident going forward with that?
I'm not sure another freshman guard would alter my level of confidence all that much (p.s. Where's Jimmy Butler? He'll spend a lot of time at the two next year if/when Buzz drops the three-guard offense).
MU definitely needs another guard in the class of 2010, but if a scholie opens up for 2009, I like my chances with a top 50 big man rather than settling for a much less promising player simply because he's a guard.
-
in all the questions about " guard"-" big man" aren't we forgetting one thing? Injury--remember when TD got insured and the Tan One said he would never be short of guards again. DJ's injury brings this to the fore.W/O getting into this again, sure all agree that TT would be looking real good now.
We NEED another guard not a big man

We NEED another guard not a big man
When TD was injured, Marquette had ZERO other point guards on the roster. MU will have two pure points on the roster next year - Mo and Cadougan - and, in a pinch, a combo guard available in Buycks. In an unimaginable scenario of all three of those guys going down, even Cubie is a better option than what MU had when Deiner got hurt.
the situations just aren't comparable and you can't load a roster with four point guards to protect against injury.
Next year's roster, as of now, will include five guys who can play in the backcourt (Mo, Cubie, Cadougan, Buycks and Butler), five wings (Lazar, Maymon, Williams, Fulce, Butler) and four guys in the post (Otule, McMorrow, Roseboro, Hazel).
Seems pretty balanced to me.
I suspect if MU is still going hard after Riley, they know they're going to have an additional scholarship to give next year, they know who's leaving and they know at which position they need to bulk up.
-
Riley isn't the only one they are going hard after.
They are definitely trying to add another guard as well.
Time will tell how it all plays out.
-
I suspect they are still going after Riley, otherwise he would not have attended such a big game as last night. If not, why even bother. The staff knows whose leaving.
Real question are they holding this mystery slot open until March 8, when Wilson makes up his mind?
-
Hey Brad. Where's the video???
We are in the middle of adding Buzz's presser AND the DaShonte interview to our site. The formatting takes a bit, and we're waiting for the technical stuff to finish up.
We're on it.
-
Great. Post it on a new thread with link for all.
-
When is next signing period?
I'm certainly intrigued by how Riley and the other possible recruits all play out.
