The Brewers announced this morning that Cory Provus, formerly of WGN Radio/Chicago Cubs will join Bob Uecker in the booth this spring, replacing the departed Jim Powell.
I'm not familiar with Provus. Any opinions from Cubs fans?

I don't see how you score a point for taking one of our bench announcers to be your starter announcer.
Provus is pretty good actually. He filled in when Hughes or Santo had to take extended trips to the crapper. I thought his pre-games were pretty crappy though.
Plus, he went to Syracuse, so he might beat some women. You're risk.

Actually, he'll be our "bench" announcer as well...Uecker is still our ace. I'm not really sure how we score a point, either, but I figured the title would prompt more participation...
Well if you factor in Pat Hughes leaving Milwaukee for Chicago several years ago, I would estimate the score at something closer to Cubs 100, Brewers 1. Pat Hughes is thee best, and is truthfully one of the few guys I like better than Jim Powell. The Brewers previous two announcers have been exceptional -- hopefully that continues with Provus. Can't say I ever took notice of him during Cub broadcasts, but I can't say I ever reacted negatively either, so hopefully he will do a nice job.
Don't forget the Cubs also got Kasper from the Brewers (before he was with the Marlins).
Cory Provus replacing Jim Powell is pretty much like Braden Looper replacing CC Sabathia. He may not be terrible, in fact he might be pretty good, but still a huge downgrade.

You'll get no argument here. With Hughes, Powell, and of course Uecker, the Brewers have had an incredible run of quality radio voices...tough to maintain that I guess.

That will throw me off when I turn on 620 this summer.
When there is no talking for several seconds with background noise, I know there is a Brewer's game on. It is unbelieveable how long Uecker can go without talking and it seemed to rub off on Jim Powell.
Provus has no problem talking constantly.
As a storyteller, Uecker is at the top. As a describer of actual baseball game action its painful sometimes. I remember once last fall I turned on a Brewer game in my car as I left the grocery store parking lot. In the ~10 minute ride home, the Brewer's scored on back to back at bats and Uecker did not actually tell the score of the game. I had to get on the internet when I got home to get the score.
Of course, I am used to listening to Pat Hughes who sometimes gives the score twice between pitches.

Does anyone remember when Ron Santo would do play by play for the Cubs about six, seven years ago when Hughes would take random breaks during the game. It was awful, long pauses and then all of a sudden you would hear "and that is a double play to end the inning" without Santo ever mentioning that a runner got on base. I love Santo, but that was terrible to listen to. Think it explains why WGN hired Andy Mazer and then Cory Provus to fill in when Hughes would take a break.
Mazer and Provus both did pregame stuff as well. While Provus was good he was no Andy Mazer.
Brewers first spring game just came on and I have it on in the background in my office, and I have to say, Provus sounds a lot like Jim Powell. I wasn't listening closely at all, but it took me a while to realize it wasn't him.
