Title: Who is the Board "official" referee and rules guru?
Post by: denverMU on February 06, 2009, 10:45:54 PM
I am just watching  a replay of the game.  Matthews is injured, on the court, and we have the ball, isn't play supposed to be stopped?  The refs let the game go until USF gets a layup.

I don't think the game stops until we get the ball back.

But we HAD the ball.  Wes went down, we went down the court, shot, and missed, USF got it back, went to their basket and got the layup.

My only thought was that .. Wes was off the court at the time, so not "in danger" of being stomped on as both possessions continued.  (Although then, why did the ref stop it after the bucket?  No idea.)

Yes. I'm not an official, but I think it's a judgment call at that point as to when and whether to stop the game. At least, I've seen the zebras handle such situations in all kind of ways.

If we had the ball, then I think the ref should have blown the whistle. It is a judgment call, but I don't think I've ever seen play go on in that situation.

I believe that I have. I figure the officials thought that we had an advantage on the break going down the court (even though down a man --and it indeed looked like we did). I was still surprised that the didn't blow it dead, though.

The officials tonight were not stellar, overall. (So what's new.)

Here's the answer to my own question, "In case of an injury to a player, the official may stop play. If the ball is in play when the injury occurs, the officials shall wait to stop the game until the team with the injury gets possession of the ball. Exception: when necessary to protect an injured player, the officials may stop play immediately."  We  had the ball and the game should have been stopped before USF scored.

With the fast break that we were on I'm guessing the officials didn't notice the injury until USF had the ball and were on a fast break of their own. I don't think the officials necessarily handled this poorly.  In the eyes of a referee, what does "when an injury occurs" mean? Does it mean when the player was actually injured or does it mean when the referee notices it?

If you don't mind, can you tell me where you looked that up?  I have been curious about a couple rules interpretations and have not been successful in looking the rules up on line.
Thanks

Sure, Google, typed in the question and got a link to NCAA rules.
