Was anyone at ND last week aware of these "jeer cards" in their student section?
Those "jeer cards" pretty sum up ND students/grads - privilidged, obnoxious a-holes that look down on anything "not good enough" for ND. I'm soooooo happy that their beloved football program is a joke and their b-ball season is falling apart. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.
Great reporting.
I think what we have here is a lack of institutional control. I'd like to see the Big East take some action here against ND.
Check this out. http://www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer.html (http://www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer.html) Heh heh heh.
Anyone care to share what else was written about our players? I'm obviously do not condone it, I am just curious as to what was written about Fulce, Cubi, Wes, and Lazar.
Didnt they write some pretty nasty stuff about Wade and his family?
Their web site is exhibit "A" in my thesis that ND is a collection of privilidged, obnoxious a-holes

Oh god. That is AWFUL.
They crossed the line.
They got called out.
No whining or opinion needed in this case (as they claim).
If they are so proud of what was on the "Jeer Card", just print the card in the NY Times and let all of the ND alumni be proud... or ashamed.
Am I reading this page right, or am I just confused?
All the jeer cards placed on this website were edited by a person in the administration before being allowed to be distributed to the students.
So, you mean to tell us, the racial slurs were approved by an administrator?
Way to throw your own athletic department under the bus.

forward it to a reporter at the NYT, I'm sure they'd be happy to run that story.
Maybe our good friend Andrew Wagner would like to write about it. I wonder what he would think of them if he thought MU students were "knuckleheads."
Unfortunately, due to the fact that students at a certain university are whiny babies who can't take a joke and apparently have nothing better to do with their time than worry about what kids at other schools are saying amongst themselves, this page is no longer available at this time. We would like for it to be known that any material previously pulled from this page is not actually what was distributed at the basketball games. Interesting that the school administrator in the Tribune piece (Brown) suggested that this was the brainchild of a rogue group of students. I smell a cover up?
Just want to preserve what the legion posted on their website, because I suspect it may change within a couple hours......

In other words, we're in deep crap for using racial slurs and since we through the athletic department under the bus we had to take this down as soon as possible.
Please tell me someone saved there jeer sheets before they took them down.

Thanks to the wonders of google, there's still a few 'jeer cards' hanging around...
http://www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer/0708/Colgate.doc
http://www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer/0809/Briar%20Cliff.doc
Here are some examples of prior games' jeer cards:
http://www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer/0809/Briar%20Cliff.doc
http://www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer/0708/Colgate.doc
Really not particularly clever. You would think geniuses like Domers could come up with some better material than mocking a guy because his sister is named Jewel.
Here is the one from last year. Found it with a simple google search.
www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer/0708/Marquette.doc
Nothing too inflamatory here, except for the dig at Ooze's fan. My guess is that it might have gotten away from the administration this year.
I went to the MU/ND game in South Bend during the final 4 year. They were handing out sheets of paper with negative information about our players. I seem to recall that first and foremost was DWade fathering a child. But there was more. I recall nothing racial then. Idiots making a bad name for an entire institution.
Brian Bowsher does a great job of going through the cheer sheets distributed to Marquette students.
We've had tons of Devendorf ideas (EDIT: which may have crossed the line ;D) shot down by Bowsher.
That's what Notre Dame needs. Someone to bring order to chaos.

As long as every girl comes dressed with a "black eye" who cares what you're yelling...
I HATE Devendorf.
This is my favorite.
"Just because you go to Notre Dame, it doesn't mean you need to act like it at basketball games."
turds...
I found a couple more old ones:
Colgate (07-08): http://www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer/0809/Briar%20Cliff.doc
Briar Cliff (08-09): http://www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer/0809/Briar%20Cliff.doc
They give out a phone number, some AIM names, and have some questionable content.
Obviously, their URL's aren't too tough to decipher. The link for this year's Marquette sheet was "broken."
Incidentally, when you access them, the download as word documents so it's very easy to save a copy.
Never fear all - MUScoop CSI service has created a backup of their entire website for the authorities to investigate (before any more evidence is destroyed). You might enjoy browsing starting at their "jeer" directory:

Note: I haven't even looked through everything.
In the Briar Cliff jeer card they published the player's phone number....and its on the internet. I wonder what the Briar Cliff fandom thinks of that?
Update...I shared it with the Briar Cliff Director of Athletics. Ill let you know his response.
Whatever, until I actually see this I'm not going to get mad. I don't know what kind of anti-venezuelan slur they used but for a group of people who are still angry about a PC decision that was made 15 years ago you all seem awefully pro-PC.
Oh wow, some ND kid yelled that james' child is illegitimate. I'm supposed to act like that would be in the top 20 worst things I've heard yelled from MU's student section. Feeling a little self rightous this morning?
a few years ago I emailed some higher ups at notre dame concerning this...mainly because they were published on the nd.edu website. I believe due to the fact that it is a .edu site, the university should take notice.
The response back was very apologetic, and they would do what they could to stop these from appearing on the website...I am presently trying to locate the emails
I found this gem on the 06-07 MU cheer sheet in reference to Ooze:
"Majoring in Social Welfare. Classes include: How to redeem food stamps, making money while sitting on one's ass, and soup line courtesy."
http://www.muscoop.com/nd_legion/jeer/www.nd.edu/~legion/jeer/0607/Marquette.doc
Here is a despicable one regarding Cincinnati's Jamual Warren. How is it even remotely possible ND could allow this on their website, and for so long?

I agree for the most part... MU students have said some nasty stuff (myself included).
However, yelling about somebody's baby (and having the correct name)... that's getting a little scary. I feel like that's only a couple steps from "I'm going to hurt your family" type stuff... which is a little scary, especially after what we saw at the DUNK.
Also, I have to be honest and say that stuff that just gets yelled in the "heat of the moment" isn't as bad as this type of premeditated stuff.
Yeah, when I was in college, I can remember worse stuff being yelled in the MU student section. I specifically remember people yelling stuff about Francisco Rodriguez's dead brother. That being said, it probably wouldn't have been allowed to be on a University sponsored website either.
Aside from any racial or family slurs, it's actually pretty funny how lame most of those jeers are.
I'm an abehole,
I'm an abehole,
I'm an abehole just the same,
But I'd rather be an abehole
than to go to Notre Dame.
I can't believe they have guide sheets on how to taunt other teams. I mean cmon, really? Where's the creativity?
It's clear and unfortunate but Notre Dame University administrators are enablers. These are the seeds of hate crimes.
So when the guy at the trib called me yesterday to talk about how this compares to our cheer sheets. I was like wahhhhh they wrote that.
I am proud to say that the "Gold Mine" is fun to read and doesnt cross the line.
this is terrible...and they are supposed to be one of the elite schools in the country...what a joke
stupid, classless, arrogant, bigoted micks...

Guess they just changed it :) Thank God we're all on our game.
This just makes me plain mad. But seriously who has to come up with sheets for their student section. ?-(
Soooooooooooooooooooooo, does anyone know exactly which "racial slurs" were directed at our players yet? I'd imagine that someone somewhere has a copy of this jeer sheet. I'd just like to know what we're getting all up in arms about.
ND is in the middle of nowhere in Indiana. You can't be too surprised that they're a bunch of hicks acting like hicks.
Never underestimate the educational value of spending 4 years in a diverse urban environment as opposed to being surrounded by cornfields. MU is a blip on the radar of the greater Milwaukee community. ND is the entire community down there. You can't learn how to function in the real world by being surrounded by people just like you. You've got to feel somewhat sorry for them.
I posted in the comments of the MU Tribune article they ought to post a PDF copy of the "jeer sheet" for us to all view.
However, looking at some of the other sheets they've had over years and comments they have made, I'm fully expecting at best some very tasteless commentary.
I agree that I can't pass judgement until I know what was used.
However I also agree that predetermined chants whtat contain personal information or slurs is tasteless. In the heat of the moment happens, and that is often by one drunken fan that makes everyone else look bad.
If someone has a copy of the jeer card they definetely should scan it and save it for later. Also this seems like a nice story for the Outside the Lines program.

That really brings back memories! I've taught song that to my golf buddies here in Vegas. "Holier than thou" ND is #2 on their hate list. They hate Duke the most because of what Hurley, Laetner & company did to them in the final four in the early nineties. We do have some good arguments about Tark the Shark. He is a saint here and I argue against that!
I can't believe a school as diverse as Notre Dame would use racial slurs.
/fully aware that MU is not winning an award for most diverse, but our urban setting makes up for it IMO.
I remember encountering in the Final Four year. As I can recall, there was some racial derogatory things about Wade and the name of his son. There were also some pretty rough comments about Diener's sister. I can't believe it's taken at least 6 years for there to be some sort of backfire on this
In the Tribune article, there are comments about using the 'N' word in previous years and they called cubie communist last year saying they should refer to him as "Jugo Chavez"
I wouldn't say there has been a backfire yet...yes they have taken it off the site, but that doesn't mean they can't print them without putting it on that site. In all honesty, I would love to see major action taken!
The real offense here is how patently un-funny and uncreative they are.

It's funny how a 5 game losing streak can bring out the best in a fanbase...
It looks like the Trib is doing a good job moderating comments. All of the comments quoted above are gone now.
It makes sense that ND fans would respond like that. As akmarq said, you'll start grasping onto any diversion when you're on a 5-game losing skid in conference. I never thought I'd say this, but they could take a page from the UW@Madison fan's book on how to behave honorably when you're team isn't as good as you thought it was going to be.
It's amazing that ND can be so wrong all the time. I'm glad we are undefeated in conference and still morally the best fans in the conference too. Keep up the good work MU fans. The world would be a dark, sad, lonely, place without us. Good thing we never went to college or else we would realize college students pull this type of thing all the time. A phone number on a small student organization website that no one goes to, how awful. I hope your crusade goes well. Also, making fun of Cubillian because his Olympic team did not win a game in the Olympics... flat out racism. At times I cannot believe that we are the only smart and moral people in the world, but I guess we are.

The Trib is a rag, and the fact that the Trib didn't put any examples shows they really didnt have much..just a few items that could have been twisted to be insulting, let it go. I agree. I couldn't tell whether it was the Cubbie comment or the Ousmane Barro welfare comments (which could be interpreted as saying that "blacks are on welfare", but that would require using a racial stereotype, and they were clearly referring to the fact that he studied social welfare. The stuff is certainly insulting and juvenile, but I couldn't find any racial slurs. Anybody know what specifically they were talking about?

The stuff is certainly insulting and juvenile, but I couldn't find any racial slurs. Anybody know what specifically they were talking about?
You are reading last years sheet i think. How worked up posters have gotten over something when they A: don't know what it said and B: would have probably defended had it originated in milwaukee has been embarrassing. Not that i'm surprised that is the way people with inferiority complexes behave.
I feel that Marquette's student section can also be out of line at times. As a junior at Marquette, I love Marquette basketball and could not be more proud of attending Marquette. However with all of that being said, I am ashamed to be associated with our student section everytime we play rivals (esp. Wisconsin) at home and do a certain chant. I always feel ashamed when it breaks out because of the way it portrays our university.
So I guess I am hoping that because of the way we feel offended by the jeer cards used at the ND game, hopefully as a student section we can clean our chants and act in an appropriate way. I feel that we need to put a stop to the certain chant because I think it can be pretty offensive and I am a Marquette student and basketball fan. Just imagine how the opposing schools look at it.

The "F*** the badgers" one? Yeah, that's just tacky....it's not even remotely funny or intimidating or whatever a cheer's supposed to be.
All the links are broken, guess I missed the fun on what the jeer cards said.

That's all you need to know re: their "rebuttal" to the criticism. If they were at all proud of it, or thought it was acceptable because it was "what everyone else does", they wouldn't have made haste to make sure nobody else saw it.

I have no problem with it; there has to be something dirty that is distinguished upon a rival. But sometimes our student section does things I'm not proud of. I'm still embarrassed by the small group of students who started the "F- Notre Dame" chant when Digger Phelps came out for College Gameday two years ago.

And I'm embarassed by a certain Notre Dame t-shirt that we debate on this board once or twice per year.
I think that no one is clean in this one. ND's cheer cards are particularly egregious because they appear to have the at least tacit approval of the athletic department.
However, before we get our panties in a total bundle over this, let's remember that Notre Dame students aren't the complete repository of stupid and boorish fan behavior. I have seen "F Notre Dame" and "Notre Dame is French for our B----" shirts, and I remember just once or twice as a student when I participated in vulgar chants aimed at the opposing team.
The cheer cards are a really stupid thing and I hope that they are discontinued. The overall response by ND fans has revealed their smug arrogance and condescension towards fans from other Catholic universities, but Marquette fans need to quit falling into the silly ND inferior complex trap that only serves to fuel ND arrogance.
I'm not saying that MU is jealous of ND in any way, but there is an-almost obsession with Notre Dame among a good portion in the MU community that just looks bad. I come from a divided MU-ND family so I have seen both sides and think that I can be remotely objective. Marquette needs to just focus on itself and the wonderful things going on in every aspect of the university. Marquette has achieved a wonderful individual identity that doesn't need to be reinforced through some feeling of competition with Notre Dame.
Let Notre Dame be Notre Dame. They are going to be arrogant, condescending, and will continue to live in the past. Notre Dame has become the university equivalent of the former star high school QB who is living off of their past glory and reputation. I personally think that's sad in a number of ways, and I hope that Marquette never falls into that trap.
Marquette fans should just ignore all things Fighting Irish. Overreacting to every perceived slight by ND and their fans just makes us look stupid, and in this case, more than a little hypocritical.
You really want to annoy ND and their fans? IGNORE THEM.

Agreed.

Great analogy, and as much as it would hurt my dad to hear me say it (he's an ND alum), I agree.

The chant is mildly embarrassing.
However, I would say that having cards printed that say "When Digger comes out, we are going to yell F- (his daughters name)" is much worse.
The pre-meditated stuff is much worse in my mind (the MU shirts are terrible).
I understand kids want to walk a fine line... but some of this stuff is pretty bad/lame.
Also, it would be interesting to see the original jeer cards (maybe from 5 years ago?) and compare them to today's. I have a feeling that they have progressively gotten worse/more personal. Things like this tend to snowball towards the gutter.
The ND fans are reacting like a kid that called in sick to work to catch a flight to Mardi Gras to party, and posted drunk pictures of themselves on their Facebook/MySpace page. Then when they went back to the office for work, were reminded that their boss was on their "friends list" by getting a pink slip.
"But other kids do it!"
"It's not that big of a deal!"
I completely agree with ozmetal. We need to just let ND be ND and let them do their own things. I am more concerned with ND t-shirts we have had made and the badgers chant. I really think that if we are going to get upset about these jeer cards that we cannot continue to make offensive t-shirts and do offensive chants. I think it makes up look like we are contradicting our own standpoint.
to sum up this thread:
Generalizations are usually just that... generalizations.
you can't stop everyone from being a jackass... some people think that they are funny or creative by being crass... when in reality, they are the farthest thing from it.
some people lack class, and lumping an entire student body into that group is bound to offend everyone in that class.
enjoy your day.

Not only does their hoops team suck but their site & its navigation sucks!
MU > ND
MUSCOOP.com > NDNATION.com
That very well may be the lamest site I have ever seen. That is web-circa 1994.
let's not forget about the floor part of the MU student section have cardboard laptops with the pitcture of that UConn guard in 2006 (that was his first game back after being suspended for stealing university laptops) or for years hearing the chant "You Won't Graduate" whenever cincinnati was in town.
don't get me wrong, i found those things HILARIOUS. but the point (as others have made) is it happens on all sides. no one is clean in all this.
i (along with many others) haven't actually viewed what was printed about the players to judge myselves....
but, devil's advocate here: people here say it's awful to jeer DJ for having a baby. but he's looked up to here; he's praised. yet, he's had a child out of wedlock while having his education provided free of charge by a CATHOLIC university. premartial sex is a sin. yet no one debates on that.
... i'm not saying we should, simply let's worry about ourselves and how we act before we go attacking others for similar things.
since this site (and its posters) seem to be about not wanting to offend and take the high road, maybe we'll no longer see Wllie Wampum and other native american related logos, and who know, maybe refer to this team/university by it's actual name... the Marquette Golden Eagles.
me, on the otherhand, will continue to laugh at things that i want while proudly wearing the t-shirt i bought in the dorms my soph year of '03/'04 for $10 that reads: Notre Dame: french for our b **** :o
Why won't this tread die?
