Title: NCAA basketball needs a BCS system
Post by: ErickJD08 on January 26, 2009, 03:24:41 PM
At this stage, the rankings are so jacked, I would take anything that is objective.  You could argue that basketball has the RPI but if WI is ranked higher than MU about a week ago, some is wrong with that ranking too.  How is ND still ranked?  How is MSU still in the top ten when they were 7 and they lost to their conference doormat... AT HOME?  How is it that MU loses to Dayton and drops from 13 (I think) to unranked.  Trust me, from a pure "state of the program" perspective, I don't care about rank.  But rankings are about bragging rights and I want to laugh at ND fans.

I'm gonna pretend I didn't see this. NCAA Basketball has the best system of crowning a champion in all of sports. College football has the worst. The suggestion that college basketball needs anything like the BCS for any purpose is just beyond comprehension.

Find me the glaring examples of a team in the current poll that is more than 3-4 spots from where they belong, and I'll listen.

I agree about the crowning, but the ranking garbage between midnight madness and the tourneys is really stupid.  I just think the polls should go away or be refined.

On this we agree.

Honestly? The BCS is known as THE WORST sports system ever, and you want more of it?

Wow.

Actually football needs a tornament like basketball. Take the top 16 and let them play. Elite 8 can play on New Years Day at the Orange, Fiesta, Rose and (Cotton or Sugar, do they still have these?) bowls. National Championsip game can be played on Sunday between the NFL comference games and the Super Bowl.

The BCS ranking system is not bad... its the no playoffs that is ridiculous.  No sport will ever have a unanimous 1 and 2.  That is why March madness is awesome.  I am also in a bad mood.  No job and monthly bills make hulk angry.

If you don't like the polls you can ignore them.  The tournament selection committee does.

They're just for fun and to give you an idea what people around the country think.  When you think about it, as far as the coach's poll goes, how can a Big East coach compare UCLA to Marquette?  He can't, of course.  He's not even watching UCLA unless he has to play them or they play against someone else he has to play.

I remember the days before the explosion of televised games when you wanted to be ranked so you'd get the score updates more often on ESPN.  That doesn't matter any more now that I can watch all the games on TV or listen to the ones I can't on internet radio.

This might qualify for one of the worst posts ever.......BCS has proven to be a flawed system that rarely produces a true national champion.

And to help advertise games for television.

You're absolutely right.  Plus you usually get a little game story in papers across the country if you're in the top 25, and that's nice.

Take it easy.  Man, the way people blast others on this board sometimes blows me away.  I don't think Erick was arguing we should use the BCS in replace of the NCAA/NIT.  I think what he was trying to say is that instead of the polls use a combination of systems like the BCS does (Sagarain, Pomery, RPI, AP voting, etc).  That way, you might get a little less biased poll.

If this is what he was saying regarding the polls, I agree.

because rankings are for bragging rights alone, I want my team to be as high as possible and I hate how a team like ND can lose a whole bunch of games and still be ranked, or MSU can lose to a bad team and drop 2 spots but when MU loses, or even does not win convincingly EVERY GAME, and everyone (including MU fans which is frustrating too) is like "SEE!! THEY ARE NOT THAT GOOD!"  So when our boys get in the top ten, its not because the pollsters think MU is an elite program and we belong there.  Its because they HAVE to put us there.  Our team keeps on busting their humps and winning games.  That's why I have been bickering with posters about how our team deserves the rank.  They may not be one of the top 8 teams in the country but they deserve every damn vote.

Erick, dude, when did MSU lose to Indiana at home this year? Must have missed that. By doormat of the conference, you surely didn't intend to downplay Northwestern's victory in East Lansing, did you?
Anyone who has watched the Wildcats this season beat Florida State, Minnesota, Michigan State, and nearly take out Purdue, knows that NU is a very good team and has the players to carry out Carmody's Princeton offense. Don't be surprised when they play in the postseason.

wow... really.  NU is 2 and 5 in the Big 10.  They lost to Penn State.  They lost to Wisconsin by almost 30.  This team is NO WHERE close to being ranked.  My point was that MSU was #7 and they lost to the second to last team in the Big Ten... AT HOME.  After that, they drop to a #9???  Give me a break.  I thought they should have dropped to 14/15.  And by "postseason" you mean NIT right?

Disregard this if you were joking 4ever.

Part of the BCS system is poll based, so I do not get the logic in saying we should go to that. The thing about college basketball is that teams are so much better in March then they are in November. The polls become more accurate as the season goes on.
