Post by: baltimoremufan on January 21, 2009, 09:35:23 PM

Thanks.

I would have to assume we were #1 in 1977 after we won the championship.

As for the past 10 years, we finished 6th in the polls in 2003 after the final four.  I can't think of any time we have been higher than that.

What is really scary is with Michigan State going down and Clemson and Syracuse losing so badly, MU would be Number 6 again.  We certainly pass the other 3 if we win both our games this week to move to No. 7, but if that happens AND ND beats CT in South Bend before we come in and end their home win streak, then the pollsters would clearly put us in front of CT for the No. 6 spot.  Not saying it will happen, but it's scary fun that we are in a spot that we are that close to being No. 6.

During the 70's MU spent many weeks at number one.  I know there is a website that lists the a;;-time team rankings.  I think there may be a link on this site.  I'll ee if I can find it.

To answer your initial question, MU has finished ranked No. 2 twice - 1971 and 1976.  Remember that the AP doesn't poll after the tournament, and the Coaches didn't used to either, so the Nat'l title team fnishes 7th in 1977.  The three Amigos sophomore season was the 19th time MU has finished in the Top 20.

In all, MU finished 13 seasons in the Top 10: 1955 (Rand Elite 8 team), 1968 (George Thompson), ALL 10 years in the 1970s, and then 2003 (Wade).  Here are the years MU finished in which spot (based on highest of the two polls):

Ranked No. 2:
1971 (OSU handed Chones only loss in 50 games to deny MU vs. UCLA for No. 1)
1976 (bracked made MU play No. 1 Indiana in the Elite 8, IU won to be the last undefeated team)

Ranked No. 3
1974
1978

Ranked No. 4
1973

Ranked No. 6
1975
2003

Ranked No. 7
1972
1977

Ranked No. 8
1955
1970

Ranked No. 10
1968
1979

Ranked No. 12
2002

Ranked No. 14
1969

Ranked No. 15
1959

Ranked No. 17
1994

Ranked No. 20
1996
2007

2 things- i think what baltimore fan may be wondering, simply because i know how his simplistic little mind works, is what was the highest weve been ranked during the season (pre NCAA tourney) in the past 10 years, aka what was the highest we got in 2003 before the final rankings. I might be wrong, but the highest I remember is #9- we played #2 louisville at home, i spent all night after the bars outside the bradley and got great seats just to see us get beat by a buzzer beater...great memory.

Also, bama i think you may be slightly confused. After this week, assuming we beat depaul we will likely move up to atleast 8 if not 7 (MSU and Clemson will drop below us and for sure Cuse if they lose again, but if they do Lville might jump us) That said, the following week has 2 games, @ND and vs Gtown. It is hard to predict what will happen with the rankings there, but a split would likely lead to slight movement, 2 losses to a medium sized drop, 2 wins and likely a slight climb depending on who loses (hard to move if noone else loses when u are that high, even with 2 good wins)

In the end, give me that last option, a win against depaul plus 2 wins next week, and i could care less if we move up anymore that week- that would make us 8-0 in conference!

How high do you want to be ranked, before we get stomped on. We are a good team, but we are not a top 10 team.

that is your opinion. the fact is that we are a top 10 team in one poll right now. and to answer your question, as high as possible- if you think otherwise you are clueless. Uconn was #2 when they got 'stomped on' by Gtown at home and they are back to #3. This is the the Big East people, the greatest conference in America! If you dont like it, go play intramurals brother.
The higher you are, the less you fall, and the greater chance you have of staying high in the rankings which gives you greater notoriety. Greater notoriety is good for the program in a ton of ways, even in NCAA seed.
Does that answer your question?

I dont need to focus on DePaul, the players do. I will focus on them on saturday before and during the game, and if we cant pull it off ill likely be one of few people not focusing on them cause ill be thinking about ND already

+1

I have been getting tire of the "focus on DePaul" stuff.  Part of the fun of this site is exploring the "what ifs" with MU fans.

Why isn't MU a top ten team?  Look, we don't have the BIG guys down low like other teams but we have a group of really talented guys that have a desire to win AND THEIR WINNING.  Their 16 2 and number one in the toughest conference in America.  So again, why do some people think we are not a top ten team right now?

Sorry but,
Their = They're (They are Winning, they don't possess winning)
They are 16-2

Because we still don't have an average high D-1 player above 6-6, and while the Big East is a great conference, we still haven't played any of the teams that make it so.  Our best wins are home vs UW, WVU, and Nova and on the road against Providence.  Not Earth-shattering stuff.  There are at least 20 D-1 teams that would be 16-2 or better with our schedule thus far.

If we beat ND and Georgetown, I'm in.

Bamamarque's history of our rankings congers fond memories of an era when, but for UCLA, MU was the premier program in college basketball. Can't figure how we missed the top 10 in '69,(that team was a Rick Mount 25' jumper from the final four) but otherwise consecutive rankings of 10, 8, 2, 7, 4, 3, 6, 2, and 7 (our championship year) are truly amazing. And Al didn't leave the cupboard bare for Hank - the '78 team finished #3. MU fans (myself included) became spoiled and took exellence for granted. The ups and downs of the subsequent 31 seasons provide perspective to a truly remarkable run.

What makes you think that our highest ranking over the last ten years was in 2003?  We made it up to 8 two years ago.

I'm already focusing on the 2013 season.  I hope I don't negatively affect the our team's performance this weekend by doing so.
