Title: Gampel Pavilion Crowd
Post by: CTWarrior on January 11, 2007, 07:34:23 AM
My boss is a diehard UConn fan who has four UConn season tickets.  He was nice enough to give me two so Classof2016 and I enjoyed the game with him in the heart of a bunch of UConn season ticket holders.

First time I've been in Gampel.  Its a great facility.  Unfortunately for UConn, they designed and began construction right before the program really took off, or else I'm sure they would have built a bigger facility.  I hadn't been on UConn's campus in more than 20 years, and to borrow a term from Buddy the Elf, it is Ginormous.

The crowd was packed with students even though classes don't begin until next week.  They were dying to get into the game but we were tremendous at silencing the crowd by matching every big UConn hoop with one of our own by pushing the ball down the floor and beating UConn's defense.  Those were huge demoralizing moments for them.  Outstanding execution.

CT...must be awesome for you to be able to see your beloved Eagles in Conneticut.  This Big East thing is pretty damn cool.

Absolutely no doubt the BE is an amazing opportunity for our Marquette brethren in the Northeast to see a lot of Marquette ball.  A double bonus not only do we join a great conference but Mu is now a short train or car ride away for most of them 2-3-4-5 times a year.

It's awesome.  For me, Providence and Rutgers are about 2 hours away, UConn and Seton Hall about 90 minutes and MSG an hour by train.  Next time we are at Nova or Georgetown on a Saturday afternoon, I'm gonna hop down there, too.  You forget how much you miss being at the games until you get to go again.  For the first several years after I graduated they would come out here once or twice a year to play the likes of Fordham, but it had been a lot less often since we joined CUSA.

I was at the game too (convenient business trip to Connecticut) and thought it was great.  The facility is fantastic as far as sight lines, etc. - small, but not a bad seat in
the house.  Two things really surprised me.  First, the crowd was really heavily male!  Maybe all the women go to see the UConn women games but the ratio seemed way out of whack compared to Bradley center crowds.   The even bigger surprise was the steady bailout of fans beginning at about the 5-6 minute mark with MU leading by
12.  That game was no way close to being over at that point especially with the quality of our free throw shooting.  I took it UConn has had too much success and was disgusted with the team's performance.  Anyway - loved the game.  Great road trip.

MU71, you are right.  Calhoun even complained extensively to the press after the game that the crowd came late and left early.  That last ditch run they made was before a half empty buliding!  Calhoun got ripped a few years back for his comments about the crowds at UConn's women's games.  It was something along the lines of they're all senior citizens or little kids.  Don't think too many college aged girls go to those games either.  You have to remember that Uconn doesn't start school until next week, so some students that normally go might have been missing.
