Title: Awesome Rebounding Performance
Post by: mutpm on January 10, 2007, 10:11:49 PM
Rebounding had been a huge weakness in the first 2 games and it didn't appear like it was going to change vs. the best rebounding team in the conference.  MU grabbed 23 offensive rebounds to just 21 defensive rebound for UCONN and was +11 on the boards.  Who would have thought our undersized lineup could haul in over 50% of our own missed shots?  Great job by all on the boards especially Barro and Burke!

I'd like to see our rebounders clear with their elbows.  Seemed like UCONN tied us up on our boards a few too many times.

A lot of those tie-ups would be called fouls in other games however.   The guys started to clear out the boards in the 2nd half which means to me at least they were adjusting to the way the game was  being called.

I couldn't believe we outrebounded them when I heard the stats after the game.  It seemed like they were getting 3 and 4 chances at the basket every possession in the first half.  But we really did a great job of limiting them to one shot in the second half.  We turned the ball over a lot after rebounds by not being able to make the outlet pass for some reason.  UConn is very long and quick inside and will be a good rebounding team all year which makes the performance even more impressive.  The turnovers had a lot to do with how quick their guards are.  Wiggins was noticeably quicker than any of our guards.  Didn't think I'd ever see that this year.
