Title: Buzz at the mall
Post by: romey on December 29, 2008, 08:13:05 PM
I was in town over the holidays, and the day after the Dom three pointer to win at NC State, my two sons and I were at Mayfair Mall and saw Buzz with his wife.  they were excited after having just watched the game the night before.  So we approached him and I introduced myself as an MU grad and he was very polite (called me sir) and I told him congratulations on a good win.  He introduced his wife and I introduced my sons and we must have chatted for 5 to 10 minutes.  Very cordial.  He said he "wished the season was over" when I suggested the Big East would be brutal this season.  He talked about a recruit in Atlanta (my current hometown) but he couldn't recall his name.  He said the guy committed to NC State.  Anyone know who he was referring to?  Funniest moment of our exchange was when my 20 year old (who played Varsity ball in HS) said, "Did you draw up that last play?"  Buzz laughed and said, "yeah." Then he told us a buddy of his sent him a text after the game and said "great use of your timeout."  I told him I though Dom was a great kid and he said he really is, and that he "spends more time with him than his wife."  She kind of rolled her eyes as though he tells everyone that.  My kids got a kick out of meeting him - and so did I.

I was hoping that Buzz was doing a mall tour like New Kids on the Block and Debbie Gibson did back in the 80s.

Alas, still a great story, thanks for sharing.

Cant' say for sure who the recruit was, but I would guess he was talking about Richard Howell. He's a senior right now at Wheeler HS in Marietta, GA. He's a 6-7 PF who Marquette was involved with, and had offered.

Don't forget the original mall queen - Tiffany!!

Nice Buzz story - he obviously didn't have to stop and speak with you.  Nice to hear that he took the time.

Every story I hear about Buzz points towards nothing but class.  I am happy with the season so far and hope he continues to develop into a coach that can lead this program deep into the tournament.

Hey, of the coaches since Hank, Bob Dukiet was probably the nicest of the bunch. I had breakfast with him several times in McCormick and he was a riot to talk to. But, his teams were bad. O'Neill, Deane and Crean were all hated by some fans of the program for being jerks, but they all had winning teams that went to the NCAAs.

I hope that Buzz is more successful than all of them combined, especially since it sounds like he's a nice guy. He's got a good recruiting class coming in. Let's hope it works out.
