Title: Stop Blaming the Officiating
Post by: Hards Alumni on December 17, 2008, 10:54:26 AM
It will not always be 100% correct, and it never can be.

You must play around the officiating... notice what they are, and are not calling.

We didn't lose this game because of officiating... tough calls went each way.

We lost the game because no one can create shots on the team, we have no frontcourt/size, and because of the lack of discipline jacking up 3's when we should have been playing our strong suit, slashing... not shooting.

oh, and the fact that we have no bench... and Dwight Burke is clearly in over his head.

While the blaming the refs is the easy way out, I don't you can honestly say Tenn handled us. Within 2 and a half minutes left we were still within 2 points. It was a good game, we just didn't finish it out because of the fouls we picked up and our lack of depth.

well plus the fact that for a few 4+ minute stretches in each half we scored zero points.

the defense was there until they let Chism get out of control (post Dom T).

Think if they had gone even 30% for those 4 minutes... it would have been a completely different ballgame.

we didnt recover from Jerel fouling out and DJ's tech. That cost us the game, but Wes brought us back and we could have won at 68-70 less the chism 3 pt.

I'll stop short of saying that the officiating cost us the game outright, but it *might* have been a different result if the refs were a non-factor. It certainly would have been interesting to see where the game went, if you took that stretch of 14 or so consecutive points from the line away...

they called the game pretty even from my standpoint.  Wes was at the line a lot, and remember you are probably watching more for fouls when we have the ball than when they do.

I yelled at the TV plenty, but the game, aside from a few calls, was called down the middle.

Lack of depth and size had a far greater impact on the outcome of this game than officiating.    There are always call to disagree with.   They did not decide this game.

tenn did NOT handle us.  if you think that, then what game were you watching?

close game all the way. POOR officiating. never said it cost us the game. just poor officiating.

There were a few calls I thought were questionable, but I also thought we got a few breaks as well.  Overall it was pretty much even.

The only thing I didn't notice was how Dom busted his lip open.  Did anyone see it?  I assume it would be foul eligible but I missed it too along with the refs.

I remember the play and it looked like he got an elbow from a guy. It wasn't called a foul, on tv it was tough to see how hard he got hit or if he was just dodging the elbow, but since his lip was bleeding i assume he got hit and a fould probably should have been called.

I also find it ridiculous that Higgins or Hightower are associated with every TV loss for Marquette over the last 20 years.

Ditt-o   that's the game in a nutshell.  we hung tough until the end when the wheels fell off with our inability to defend vs. Chism & all those fouls.... which they were dealt by the refs... oops, darn refs!!   ;)

Would love to see the rodents play them; or to see us vs. Temple, just out of curiosity.

Agreed, but watching the first 7-10 minutes the refs were really letting them play.  It was very physical on the perimeter then with about 10 minutes left Higgins decided to make his presence known and began calling alot of ticky-tack fouls IMO.

There were bad calls for both teams but I thought the refs became too much of a factor down the line...This is BE basketball not the 8th grade Rec league.

Shouldn't you be using quotes, to honor the gentleman that sat behind us and said this phrase approximately 150 times? Except I think he said 8th grade girls league.

One of the few things he uttered that I agreed with.  I'll site my source from now on.
