Question:
Intro Song
Option 1: Fat Boy Slim "Right Here, Right now"
Option 2: U2 - Streets/Name
Option 3: Something else
Some new intro was shown tonite at the Chicago State Game (different from Houston Baptist), it was nothing short of terrible and does not lead into a 'We Are Marquette' cheer at all and brought no energy. Really disappointing. They have to bring back Where the Streets Have No Name intro. Can anyone make some phone calls to MU please...
COMPLETELY AGREE.
That was utterly terrible. What are they thinking?
Agree as well. Lame.
don't count on streets with no name coming back..
video folks have been told not to play or use that from admin.... trying to severe ties with last regime.
also, you won't find video of TC easily in retro videos.
told the folk in video today that while the intro used at HB was nice, it was not awe-inspiring as a tool to get crowd into things.
it'll be passed along, but don't expect much.
oh well.
I am out of state and wasn't able to attend tonight.
So they didn't have the "Pray" video tonight? If so, what was it like? What was the music? Maybe they are playing with a few different options to see what's best? Maybe a new one on Saturday?
It needs to go back. They do not have to include TC in the Where the Streets Have No Name intro. That intro today was a complete joke. The Pray video is way better than the new one shown tonite. Just garbage.
If it isn't broke, don't fix it. Everyone I know loves the Where the Streets Have No Name intro and feel it is part of the MU basketball experience at a game. Need to go back.
For something short and sweet, why not the video for ticket promotions? Or something similar to this, anyway. Gets me pumped up.

what songs were in tonites game pre game video?
It was that Fatboy Slim Right Here Right Now song. Just bad. On top of that overused.
I do like the ticket promotion video, but Where the Streets Have No Name is a must.
Poll added.
yeah that fatboy slim song has to go. its going to be hard to fire the crowd up before a game with that lame video. i do really like the pray video, it has a lot of awesome highlights in it.
With most of the seats empty and the intro being just terrible it was an embarrassing beginning to the game. I know it was just Chicago state on a Monday, but I'd be disappointed with the attendance if I was a player.
Please change intro back to U2!
I came to make a BANG! Great song, and a pretty sweet commercial.

Maybe for tip off.
EDIT: Suppose I should be clear--I'm suggesting the song, not the video. BTW, the commercial in the link was directed by Guy Ritchie. Think he'd be interested in doing something similar for our intros? ;D
How would you feel if the video shown at the Chicago State game was played with "Where the Streets Have No Name"?
THe video is really no different than the video played with WTSHNN. It starts out with some historical players then goes into a ton of highlights. The only difference is the current team isnt standing in front of the historical players.
Also how awesome is the Dance Cam?
JMO, but I've always thought the song "Slayed" by the British DJ Overseer, at least the first minute, would make a fantastic pre-game intro. Picture a video montage highlights interspersed with shots of the players doing the "It's time" bit.

Excellent point. Yeah, the song is a bit stale, but it's better than the MM video. I'm still in the Streets camp, but this is an improvement at least.
I also am in the Streets camp but have no problem with the video.
Any chance you guys can press Pintens on this one?
Tell him I might withhold my donations ;D

This video is awesome, I would love something like this.
I sat down in the student section for the first time in about 3 years tonight, and when tonight's video came on, there was ZERO reaction whatsoever.
If athletics is so concerned about distancing themselves from the Crean era, fine; take down the damn CBE and Great Alaska Shootout banners in the BC, because those are the most blatant examples of Crean's ego-stroking over mediocre accomplishment. You can even edit him out of the pregame videos for the time being too. But don't gut the Gameday experience on this account, particularly with the starting lineups.
When I watch the video of the the intros from the last 7 years, I feel passion, I feel history, and I most particularly feel emotion. I get fired up not just because of the game, but because this song triggers so many memories of the Marquette experience for me beyond just basketball games from when I was a student. And I know many alums have the exact same reaction when they hear WTSHNN, whether it be at a game, a bar with friends, or just driving in the car. It's become part of the Marquette identity, particularly for this decade's alums.
Also, on a couple of random notes, why can't the Eagle give away the freaking pizza box BEFORE the PA guy announces "congratulations, you just won free Palermo's for a year?". Oh, and who came up with the idea of throwing t-shirts into the student section after 3 pointers? Hard to cheer when a t-shirt comes flying at you and 17 people try to jump over you for it.
I voted other...
Should choose VICTORY by PDiddy/B.I.G.
or
BOYZ IN THE HOOD by NWA
:)

Well based on that logic the Marquette Madness video shown at the Houston Baptist game should be shown. The student section broke into a thunderous "We Are Marquette" chant for that one.
I'd say that the small turnout tonight didn't help the reaction for the video. Minutes before the game started I could hear people talking on the other side of the BC.

Complaining about t-shirts being thrown into the crowd is a new one.
I'm all for change (never a big fan of streets...eh...one in every crowd).
Anyhow, how about a little DJ action. "Show No Fear", but I would start it at about the 0:56 mark.

The very few words are great for video, easy to clap along, and with some good mixing could lead right into "We are Marquette" :)
Though I like Pakuni's Slayed suggestion too.
I was always a big fan of Operatic/epic musical scores... some suggestions:
O Fortuna from Carmen
Lux Aeterna from the movie Requium for a Dream
youtube em if you haven't heard em.

+1. Where the Streets Have No Name became synonymous with Marquette basketball, which as we all know, is much bigger than Tom Crean.

My knowledge of opera and classical music is limited, to say the least. Thanks for answering my "what is that music" question that I've had repeatedly over the last several years. In a very strange coincidence, I was actually wondering that just this morning. Now you've answered it for me; it's O Fortuna from Carmen.
As an out-of-towner who doesn't see games in Milwaukee, I don't have a dog in this fight. But I love this piece of music and you could do a great intro with it.
Edited to add: now that I know the name of the song, it's a bit easier to research it. Apparently it's not from the opera Carmen, but is from a German composer's (Carl Orff)
Carmina Burana. Orff set a collection of medieval latin poems to music in the 1930's.
Completely OT: Have you seen the commercial for the iPhone application which allows you to hold it up to the radio and it will identify the song and artist that it hears? Very cool application.

O Fortuna is actually from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. It would be a good choice though; it's the ultimate movie climax music for anyone who can't commission their own soundtrack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuERh0jBjh8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuERh0jBjh8) (not the greatest recording I've heard, but you'll recognize it.)
The end of O Fortuna sounds like a DeBeers commercial.
They should come out to Trivium- Detonation.
It's pretty funny that people who were so excited when Buzz was hired because he wasn't concerned with the "PR crap" that Crean loved are upset with the lack of game atmosphere only two games into Buzz' tenure.
That's a small universe of people, you do know that, right?
I think that Right here, Right now is the perfect song to play, because for three of our biggest studs (plus DB) this is there last chance. It truly is Right here/Right now.
I love the pray video, it gives me goosebumps everytime.
Anythign from Madonna should suffice, sSe is still popular, right?
voting results are indicitive of a page where people dislike change of any kind. There are other songs out there. How about run to the hills by iron maden.

I would agree that a *portion* of people voted "against change" for change's sake .. but certainly others voted because the song is just plain good, and fits our needs, excites the crowd. I'm not sure why "traditionalists" should somehow be belittled.
No one is happier than me that TC is gone but to edit him out of videos? To erase him from the history? That's a joke.
I remember getting upset at how we seemed to white wash over the Mike Deane era and I'm mad now about erasing TC. I would hope a highlight video would show all coaches. All (except maybe the Piano Man) gave us some great, great moments.
Crean isn't out of the "remember the titans" video they show before tip-off. He's still in there cutting the nets down.
As for next year who knows. I'd assume it will be recut towards the end with the addition of new NBA players.
If we are really going to go the classical music route, this should be considered:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUru7nSyKxQ
Does Bono know that Tom Crean is now being credited with Where the Streets Have No Name?
They played the National Anthem before every game Crean coached. Do we have to stop playing that too?
If you don't want him in the videos, fine (I have to admit my teeth clench everytime I see a photo of him), but don't mess with the song!

Just think about if we could get all of our players to do that for the intro.
Response from a message I sent to the Athletic Department concerned about the change. Take it for what it's worth.
QuoteMike-
Thanks for your email. We want to continue to provide the best atmosphere in the country and are constantly examining ways to enhance the fan experience.
The decision to change the intro is not related to the coaching change. If you recall during your time at Marquette we also experimented with alternate intros such as "Like That".
We do appreciate your feedback and if you have any other questions regarding your fan experience please don't hesitate to send me an email at <edited> or call me at 414.288.0264

I dont care about cutting crean out of the videos or keeping him in. who cares?!!? however, there is one video which i will never miss seeing- the annex 'commercial' with Crean, students and staff stomping along to we will rock you. My god, just the thought of never seeing that again made me almost jump right out of my seat. If they are going to do a new one with buzz they should be playing the 'thunderstruck' drinking game in the Annex. that would be cool.
Wow! I forgot about that Cheers clip. We may never see it again. Too bad.

If you thought that was belittling you should have seen my first draft. Plain good and excites the crowd (other criteria seems redundant) is correct but that logic is also why we have to listen to cotten eye joe every game.

Reading that email is a fine example of deflection. Do we still chart those? :)
But .. "Cotton Eye Joe" isn't exactly beloved. I imagine there have been a few (many?) games where it has NOT been played (don't think it was last night) .. it's a song very few would miss if never played again.
Streets, as this thread has demonstrated, is not in the same class as CEJ, as CEJ is just a silly song that could be replaced by one of many other jock-jam type rifs.
Streets has history, tradition, and is clearly loved by a good portion of those who attend games. Not everyone, clearly, but about 1000x more than Fatboy Slim.
