Title: Beating a zone...watch PITT-Syracuse game...
Post by: Harrison on January 05, 2007, 11:16:12 AM
Watched the replay on CSTV.  Absolutely amazing to watch that Pitt team flash to the Ft line for jumpers, for reversals, or to pass to the baseline.  They ran the baseline for lobs and postups.  5 guys continously moving.  Crisp ball movement as Pitt continuously attacked the Syr. zone.  Absolutely astonishing to watch immediately after watching MU do the exact opposite against the very same defense.  Coach Tom Crean is the most ineffective coach against a zone that I have ever seen, bar none.  5 guys literally standing there, no movement, no ball movement is incredibly easy to guard.  A back screen for one pass or a pick and pop with the shot clock winding down is pathetic.  Truly remarkable a coach in his eighth year can be so incredibly inept on how to attack a zone.  Please do not say it is simply beacuse we cannot shoot.  There are numerous ways to attack a zone inside 15 feet but none of them involve 4 guys standing in the same spot for 20 seconds while the 3 on top slowly move the ball around or the PG dribbles the whole time.  Crean has employed this pathetic zone breaker for 8 years and it has worked in 2 of them.  The first time when we had a once in a generation player that could do what ever he wanted and demanded a triple team.  And the other time when we had one of the greatest shooters in college basketball history.  The other 6 years it has been a debacle.
