So, this is not a "the sky is falling" gloom and doom post....I'm hopeful that we can get back on track and that Jerel is not out for an extended time BUT....
what the hell happened to the team that beat Texas Tech and Duke? Where's the fire and relentless attacking that that team showed? Why in the world do we not press more with such a guard oriented attack?? I guess I can understand not pressing as much tonight without JM but we're barely pressing at all even with him in the lineup.
That game tonight was so frickin frustrating to watch it was ridiculous. Our shooting is just plain awful....a top half finish in the BE should be our goal.
DJ has got to be out of his mind if he is even considering the NBA after this year....or maybe I should say the scouts have to be out of their minds.
That was not the 15th best team in the country that played against Providence tonight.
Two thoughts. First of all, agree with your initial assessment on pressing more and picking up the pace with a team that is not good in the half-court on offense or defense. That being said, some have commented about what they see as a lack of basketball IQ on this team. This may be a team that has problems anticipating passing lanes on a press and therefore gives up too many easy baskets because of it. That all being said, I'd rather watch this team playing like the Loyola Marymount teams of 15 years ago (minus the three's) than what we saw tonight.
That's a mediocre team that is going to struggle in the BE. Poor shooting, no inside game and badly coached, at least last night, or maybe more accurately poorly prepared for the game. Zones will kill them this year, especially if they don't figure out how to attack them. It was painful to watch. I also don't think one can underestimate the loss of McNeal, who I think is the heart of this team, not DJ.

The team that beat TT and Duke is still there, just the makeup of the opposition is different. TT was not very athletic and, in true Bobby Knight fashion, chose to play man-to-man the entire game. We can play generally against a man-to-man and we can turn over an unathletic team. Duke was very young, played man-to-man predominantly and also not very athletic (or physical.) Again the matchups were pretty good for us. We won't playmany teams like that in the BE and if any coach man-to-man against us he should be fired immediately after the game.
1. If we have trouble against zones, Sunday against Syracuse could get very ugly.
2. We miss Novak very badly, not just for his shooting but for his leadership. No one on this team has any idea how to settle things down when they need settling.
3. The sophomores took everyone by surprise last year. That isn't happening now.
4. The offense has to be thrown out. You cannot run a perimeter-geared offense when no one on the team is capable of shooting from outside 12 feet.
5. I stand by what I said earlier this year: DJ would be making a serious mistake by going pro. Right now he would not even be drafted.
Serious mistake for DJ to think pros after this - I agree. Would he be drafted - of course he would, but not where he'd like to be
